Introduction to My One Piece OC

Based on the results of the poll, most of you asked for me to talk about my OC.

Quick heads up, I have a lot of things planned for my OC in the fic that I think you all will love, but I may not reveal that here because I think you will enjoy it better if you figure it out when you read the fic or when it’s been revealed in (hopefully) a dramatic fashion.

Additionally, be aware that this an isekai fic. It’s OC-centric most of the time, but as the story progresses, I do have scenes written that follow other characters.

Also, I can’t draw worth shit, so you’ll have to use your imagination…. I do know about piccrew and have done those. I think I did make some of my OC, but those are on my phone and I’m writing this on my iPad. So, I’ll add those piccrew images to give everyone a general idea as to what she looks like—minus a few details that weren’t available.

OC name: Iris.

She’s 18 and filled with her own trauma because let’s be real—everyone in One Piece’s baseline is Trauma, so why should she be exempt. She finds herself waking up one day in a small boat with a weird teenager that looks and sounds frighteningly like Monkey D. Luffy. He invites her to join his crew as his First Mate (which she vehemently tries to turn down, but we know it’s a battle she’ll lose).

She has these pale blue-white eyes and pastel rainbow hair (yes, I did another character with rainbow hair. RAINBOW HAIR IS AWESOME AND YOU CAN PRY IT FROM MY COLD DEAD HEADS). It’s also funny because her real hair color is blonde. She’d dyed it like a pastel rainbow for her 18th birthday as part of her celebration with her older brothers for finally being free of shitty family (it’s explained later, much much later). Then, a couple months later, she’s moving into her own apartment to start college, goes to bed that night, and BAM! She’s in One Piece. She also has these scars on her right arm from when she got struck by lightning when she was 14 (read in fic (if I ever finish it enough to POST IT GODDAMNIT)).

She does not know how she got there, but she’s gonna find out. Then, nut-punch whatever—or really whoever—brought her here.

She’s also a huge One Piece fan, but fell off it when she was 16 due to family issues. She’d stopped around a third of the way in the Wano arc, but had seen some spoilers for things (Gear 5, Shamrock, the mural in Elbaf, Vegapunk, Bonney and Kuma, and a few other things). So, to find out she’s in the world of One Piece is trippy and also kinda exciting.

She panics a lot because she tries to not make too big of a wave and not change the story too much. However, after a while, when she realizes that there’s more to her being here than she realized, she slowly goes from “oh my god, I have to be careful and not change things” to “fuck it, I’m gonna overthrow the government”.

On top of being Luffy’s First Mate, she has a healing power that comes with her being from another world (she does not know at first) and she ends up getting a devil fruit. Yes, this makes her mad because she does not want to feel overpowered (she says as her healing ability knocks her out the first time she uses it). But that’s not all she does! She develops aliases that she uses for a bunch of other stuff. She becomes a traveling investigative journalist (Sengoku’s hair went white bc of her or at least it will feel like it) and manages to make a deal with Big News Morgans to run her articles (the Navy and World Government’s PR team needs a 1982969873592% raise bc of her). She becomes an information broker thanks to her always stealing files from every Navy base and government building she can sneak into. She is slowly creating a second World Government that isn’t ACTUALLY the World Government and the World Government doesn’t notice bc officially it’s more of an alliance that provides humanitarian aid and safe trading routes (there’s more to it, I promise). She’s also the shadow queen for like 3-4 different countries (she’s tried to get out of that, but some people there have a sense of humor and won’t let her).

Additionally, she ends up changing the crew a bit. As in, she manages to increase the crew’s numbers by tenfold (it sounds like an exaggeration, but I promise it isn’t). By the time they finish Wano, the crew is almost to 50 people and the number WILL change bc of shit she’s doing. I never know the official number I should put because something happens to make me change it. She also increases the size of the Strawhat Grand Fleet by getting those that like or wouldn’t be against being part of the fleet.

In other words, there is quite a bit of canon divergence. In the actual canon storyline, the divergence varies from arc to arc depending on what Iris feels she can or can’t get away with. Some might not change much at all, mostly the stuff in the beginning, but some have a lot of major changes which are usually when Iris has decided that she’s going to do things her way.

As mentioned before, she does panic a lot. But not in a “I don’t know what to do in this battle” kind of way, but more of a “I’ve been changing so much of this and I don’t know if that’s going to fuck everything up in a bad way”. She frets over being First Mate instead of Zoro. She frets over how Luffy is letting her recruit people to the crew that she thinks would be beneficial. She frets that she might end up getting the crew hurt in some way and loves them so much that if they end up hating/betraying her, it might actually kill her. She ends up overthinking a lot, but the crew’s got her back. A lot of her shenaniganry is pretty funny to them, so they often help her through her episodes before sitting back to watch the next round of chaos she starts.

Again, trying to not reveal too much about her or what she does in the fanfic because I don’t want to spoil anything too crazy for you.

Here are some piccrew avatars I did of Iris. Its not perfect, but I think it gives a general idea of what she looks like. I think when I post an excerpt of my story, I might share ones that talk about her general description to give a better picture. The last one that has her with blonde hair is actually an early concept of how I imagined her until I changed her hair to rainbow.

So, I'm doing some writing on my One Piece fic, which I've been doing for I think a year now. Don't ask when I'm posting it, I want to finish writing up to certain arcs, so I have a lot to post, but I keep jumping around to write a bunch of different scenes I want.

Anyway, after spending for-fucking-ever dragging my feet, I get back to the Baratie arc. It's just the scene with Krieg needing to get food for his men and I keep having my OC just badmouthing him. The whole fucking time. And I'm get to this:

Krieg: if anything else, I'm going to make sure that you're dead by the day's end.

OC: *flips him a double bird* better men have tried.

There's a bunch of lead up to this part, but it's... it's like she's taking over. I can barely go a paragraph without her just ripping into Krieg. Like I totally hated him, as one does when the villain of the arc shows up, but OC is just bullying him. And I can't stop because it's too much fun. And if any of you decide to read this when I finally start posting, hopefully, you enjoy the chaos as much as I did.

Alright, to ao3's soon to be arriving Wattpad Refugees, a basic guide to general user culture:

1.) Unlike Wattpads vote system that let's you like each chapter, the ao3 equivalent kudos only allows one per work. Everyone is generally quietly annoyed about this. To engage with each chapter, you're heavily encouraged to comment. Trust me, it makes people's day.

2.) Ao3 has no algorithm. By default it's latest updated work first. You can find things to your taste through searches, filters and tags.

3.) 'No archive warnings apply' and 'user has chosen not to use archive warnings' mean two very different things. No archives warnings means the work is free from any content that could require a warning tag (character death, graphic depictions of violence, non-con, etc). User has chosen not to use archive warnings means it could contain any of the warning content, be it hasn't been explicitly tagged. Treat it like an allergen. No archive warnings apply is allergen free. User has chosen not to use archive warnings, may contain traces or whole chunks of the allergen. If you're likely to have a bad reaction, maybe don't take the risk.

4.) Speaking of warnings, ao3 has very few restrictions on the type of work that's allowed. Whatever your personal thoughts or feelings on that are, thats how the site is. You're likely to run across some dark subject matters and a lot of people are uncomfortable with reading that. You're well within your rights not like these works and have your opinion on whether they should be allowed, but harassing the authors of such works (or any works) is more likely to come back on you than them. Ao3 operates on a strong policy of 'don't like, don't read'. Use the tagging system to your full advantage to only engage with the kind of works you want to see.

Understanding Usopp's Perspective in Water 7

I still don't understand why people can't grasp that Usopp was only 17 years old during the Water 7 arc. People love to be "objective" and claim Usopp was wrong for challenging his captain, but Luffy wasn't entirely blameless either.

Usopp was the first to notice how unprepared everyone was for the New World, but the rest of the crew seemed in denial or overconfident. How could Usopp voice his insecurities when everyone else apparently had their act together? It felt like, "Yeah, whatever Usopp, you're just a scaredy cat," when, in reality, he was becoming more attuned to the fact that one of the strongest people he knew was starting to lose to the bad guys.

Critics say, "Usopp didn't know how to take orders from his captain," but that's not true. If Luffy was starting to lose, then how prepared were they for the New World? Usopp knew his own limitations and was unsure how to help, leading him to feel like he was losing control. He likely thought, "If everyone else has their act together, then who am I?" He channeled all that into Merry.

I believe Usopp's innate ability to sense danger started to manifest here. Luffy was overestimating himself—from the incident with Kuzan to punching Charlos.

Luffy took the crew, his friends, for granted and didn't realize how much he needed them until after Marineford, when Jinbe gave him a reality check. He couldn't empathize with Usopp because he failed to understand the consequences of being unprepared and powerless. Luffy thought his confidence would be enough for everyone, but it just put them all in danger. There was still some "playing pirate" nonsense going on.

Luffy was also 17 and deserves grace, but apparently, Usopp is the outlier who brings the crew down? Yeah, right. The unconscious bias shows. The privilege shows.

Literally just read a fic where the crew can’t stop beating it into Usopp’s f*cking head how much he “sucked” back in Water 7. Smh. What message does that give? Oh, keep telling someone they suck to the point they go and find the highest building to jump off of? Tough love works…to an extent. But without empathy? Yeah. What a crock of sh*t.

Just needed to get that off my chest.
