The Boston MCR Book Lore -The HBR Special Issue August Edition and Gemini Process Manual

MCR Boston was wild for multiple reasons, but I can't let us skip over the fact that there are not one, but a second hidden book used during "Sleep!" This is the clearest video of the scene I can find, where the Gemini Process Manual falls out from inside a copy of this journal:

The Gemini Process Manual is important: it sends Gerard's character into crisis before the song starts, and dominos out of a lot of show changes from previous weeks (Gerard choosing to put on the jacket early, for example), but I'd like to take us through HBR's journal first, to think about what Gerard was supposed to read.

And first, let's get this out of our system:

That parallel though. The journal itself tracks through several lengthy articles on leadership motivation: lots of business major jargon on how to hire and retain loyal employees. There are a couple of spots I found suspicious in the way this Patrick Bateman of a text functions, but this section on p. 16 is... something else:

The content here is focused on how to respond to (and use) worker impulses to "get out," "regain control," and "regain alignment." This language has already shown up multiple times, in multiple hints, but this is a very real moment in which the contents of this journal talk back to the reader about weeding that impulse out of employees, or themselves. Now, The Gemini Process Manual is not a real book (think Murder Magazine) and carries DRAAG imagery on its cover. We can't know what the contents are obviously, but we do know the Gemini Process is a very real term in film studies, in which "two images to interact in one scene." This technique allows one actor to play two characters on screen at once, and interact with each other. In a text interested in the doubling of roles and the existence of parallel universes, there's a very concrete connection between previous lore and this week's crashout, as tension mounts closer and closer to a resolution.
