"But its not possible to explain this to an 8 year old! They do just need to get older!" I hear you cry. And I do hear you. There are some things that are unfortunately like that!

Do your best anyway. Someone younger than you also won't understand the phrase "you'll understand when you're older" in the way you do, and you will only look like a patronizing ass and the younger person will be pissed.

If you need to say something like that, truly, here is a better phrasing:

"I don't know how to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it. I didnt understand before it happened to me. But the closest I could say is [simile if you have one, otherwise best description of the feelings you can come up with]."
