Coming into the Final Project: Business Plan class, there was a lot of anticipation to see how all twelve of these classes would culminate into my final business plan presentation. I always try not to expect too much or anticipate any of the classes I’ve come across because I like to build these imaginary expectations and I’d rather live in reality, let the new knowledge from these lectures catch me by surprise. It also wasn’t lost on me that this class is actually my last one before I graduate so the desire to learn as much as possible was always there. I’ve consistently been a person who loves to learn new things and loves to be challenged, I also just love to listen to people who have lived before me tell their stories and life experiences as well as how that experience ties into the lecture.
I’ve learned so much in this class, especially when it comes to developing an elevator pitch that needs to capture my intended audience in the shortest amount of time and ensure that I get a follow-up meeting. Working on my financial statement and putting the final touch on it was a highlight for me as that has been a culmination of the past classes I’ve had stemming from the Pro Forma assignment. I was never into finance but after all these classes, I’ve developed a taste for more knowledge about finance and all things that surround it because I believe that many Americans don’t even know the basics unless they’ve taken a finance class. Learning about finance and business in general has been an eye opener for me and I will continue to follow down this path.
I intend to use what I’ve learned in all twelve classes as tools to help me carve out a career for myself in the music industry and ultimately the entertainment industry. I really don’t see me doing anything else besides working in the entertainment field, I don’t think I’d be truly happy doing anything else because there’s a certain natural vibe that I get from being in the studio and working with other creatives. I want this passion to resonate with others especially when I set foot in front of potential investors who could fund my business plan(s). I never want to settle and never want to limit myself to one opportunity. I leave Full Sail genuinely humbled and appreciative that I’ve got to learn from people who’ve carved out a career for themselves and followed their path even if they didn’t where it would lead them.

Upon first hearing about this course I didn’t know what to expect and therefore my original goal for this class was to absorb as much knowledge about business plans from each lecture. I planned to do that so that I could better support myself when completing assignments and internalize the knowledge, so I’d be ready for the next and final course that I am scheduled to have after this one. I think my goals were met for this class as I made sure that I save and store as well as take notes on all the gems the instructor dropped on us whether it was from the lecture or prior knowledge that he possessed based on his experiences in the industry.
After taking Business Plan Development and absorbing the knowledge given to me through the lectures as well as completing the assignments every week, it became apparent to me when I realized that a lot of these assignments were culminations of the assignments and courses I’ve done in the past. Therefore, the skill was already there and although I didn’t know what to expect from this class, the previous courses set me up for success in BDP and made sure that I had the tools I needed to complete the assignments based on ones that I completed in the past for the other courses. I learned a lot and one thing that will stick with me forever is the two things this class is really based on and that is my business plan and my financials that I have to present to potential investors in order to win them over and use their resources to start my business and get it off the ground.
The course material as well as the assignments have set me up for the inevitable future when I find myself in front of a group of investors trying to win their favor and financial backing. What I’ve learned can be applied personally and professionally as in my opinion, having a business plan and a financial structure combines the two and forces you to be personal about your profession. Investors want to believe in what you believe but they want to see behind the scenes and be assured that your business will be successful enough for them to see a substantial return on their investment.

With there being one week left of Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution, I can confidently say that it was a treat to take this class. I still did not know what to expect but upon sitting in the lectures and reading the required materials, I’ve acquired this newfound enjoyment of learning about publishing and distribution. When I first heard about this class I immediately tried to dump everything I’d already known about the two topics only to start from somewhere fresh and let the instructor cultivate my mind as I take in new information. There was a lot of excitement prior to coming to this class because I knew that I would get information that I can use to further my career and be another tool in my belt once I eventually graduate and leave the school to enter the entertainment business. I’ve learned a lot from this course and I believe there is even more to learn as the instructor has yet to tell us how she turned $37 into $80,000 and I am most definitely excited to hear her story and apply to my life and my content when it comes to self-publishing. Which was actually a foreign topic to me until I sat in class and heard it for the first time, and while it’s self-explanatory there was only so much to be known about self-publishing. For example, what platform I would need to access to help me on my journey to self-publishing. That platform is through CreateSpace, and I will absolutely learn the ins and outs to ensure I get the best bang for my buck like my instructor.
This class has certainly given me much more permission to make money independently and avoid using someone to publish or handle my work. I want the most for my efforts and the highest percentage of royalties that I can muster through my deals and partnerships with distributors. I feel liberated to seek out money without feeling tethered or obligated to go through the gatekeepers. What I’ve learned in this class will allow me to go around them.

Coming into Advanced Entertainment Law, I think I was really excited but also apprehensive because I didn’t know what to expect. With that being said, I have always thought highly of acquiring any information pertaining to the entertainment business especially in the law department. My initial goal was to ensure that I have more tools under my belt to further progress in my career. Learning about entertainment law becomes a valuable tool that allows me to navigate through all the pitfalls that could affect my business. I do not want to get caught up in lawsuits based on copyright infringement or any other infraction for that matter.
I found myself highly intrigued when I came across certain topics throughout the course. It was a short time to learn so much about the laws that govern the entertainment industry and the surrounding industries. I learned about the various courts and the levels on which they operate. Intellectual property was one of my favorite topics especially since I’m a creative and that is where my bread and butter comes from. Learning about the types of patents, copyrights and trade secrets also took the most of my interest as it stands to shield my business from other bad situations.
I haven’t always been savvy in the law department and I’m positive that I’m going to hire a lawyer in the future once my business gets launched. There is a mark of a wise businessperson to hire someone who might be smarter than yourself in a particular area. With that being said, it would also benefit me in the long run to at least find out and learn as much as I can to keep from being taken advantage of or otherwise taken to court because of possibly infringing on someone’s intellectual property. After knowing what it takes and the pitfalls to avoid, I can confidently say that this course has become the springboard that will propel me to greater knowledge of the laws that govern the entertainment industry.

Upon learning that my next class would be Product & Artist Management, I honestly didn’t know what to expect as I’ve never had aspirations to manage an artist nor did I know how to manage a product or what that actually meant. Since taking the class and going over the lectures, I’ve slowly come to appreciate everything about this class as I learned a lot about the aforementioned topics. Although I still have no plans to become an artist manager, there’s things that I’ve learned about the position that can absolutely help me in the future whenever I encounter artist managers. I can see into their world and use what I know to communicate better and relate to them. I learned that to be an artist manager, you have wear many hats and know when to deploy them at the arise of a situation. They also have different styles on leading and can interchange between those as well. I think you have to have passion, vision, and ambition as a manager, otherwise it will not work out for the manager and their team.
It’s a double edged sword being an artist manager, as you can either elevate the artist’s career or be their downfall by taking advantage of them. Artist manager’s come in all shapes and sizes so in the end you just have to find the right fit. While I can’t see myself being an artist manager, I can confidently say that since I’m a creative I’ll be a product manager. Producing and song writing will be the product as I try to find my target audience. Know how to navigate through the niche market to attract or create your own. There’s a lot of psychological and statistical information to be used by a product manager, especially concerning where their target market is. A big quality for the product manager to have is to be engaging with the target audience and ensure that you’re giving them something of value. Lifestyle and experience are the words that come mind automatically when thinking of the responsibility of a product manager.

Before my arrival to Negotiation & Deal-Making, I had no idea what the course would entail especially since my initial thoughts of negotiations or deal making were things that I perceived to be in movies with hostage situations and in meeting rooms with record executives. Of course that perception changed once I started taking the course and realized that these topics took place in everyday life. There were negotiations and deals being made on a daily basis whether I knew it or not. Therefore, my goals towards improving those negotiation skills were more or so focused on the interaction between myself and the other party. For example, being able to identify someone’s negotiation style as well as their communication style.
Going through this course has helped me in so many ways and as I continue on with my negotiations, I will have already identified the other party’s negotiation style and how to handle their communication style as well. Learning about those styles has only been beneficial and made me a better negotiator. When I’m currently negotiating, I make sure that I establish my interests as well as identify and understand the other party’s interests to come up with a mutual agreement. Also it would behoove me to find out their underlying interests and figure out what really motivates them.
In the future, applying everything that I’ve learned in this class will not only help me going in various negotiations but also help understand people and their interests a lot better. I was always an intuitive person and took pride in being able to read the room but now I have even more knowledge to fall back on in my tool belt. In addition to that, I’ve learned to pay more attention to negative emotions as they will be exhibited in most negotiations and it would benefit me to use that to figure out what really drives a person. Which can help me further understand their position and propel both parties into a mutual agreement, based on how I utilized what I’ve learned in Negotiations & Deal-Making.

DMK Mastery Journal
I can never forget the day that I made the choice to come to Full Sail and embark on my journey towards a Bachelors and Masters degree. I accomplish my first goal and that was to earn my Bachelors in Music Production, now I'm on my way to completing my Masters in Entertainment Business. I know that I still have a long way to go and I still have to get through classes such as DMK. I didn’t know what to expect coming into this class but the name speaks for itself and I was looking forward to learning so much about Digital Marketing as my social media presence is pretty much non-existent compared to other people who use these applications and social sites. Boosting my presence is the main goal as most people who aspire to make it and expand their reach certainly have to be prominent on sites such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to name a few. Three takeaways I got from the Lynda were Identifying Influencers, Engaging Prospects and Customer Service. Idenfiying the influencers would be a turning point in the awareness that I want to garner for my business as they are the gatekeepers so-to-speak. Influencers are the threshold between infamy and anonymity, the perfect targets to boost my sales and notoriety. Customer Service is important in any business as you want to ensure your customer has the best experience possible when it comes to your company and the products or services you offer. Keeping them happy and wanting more is how you grow your business and gain even more customers through word of mouth and recommendations. Applying these will be fairly easy as working in the music industry is heavily based on feedback and customer service. The best businesses work on building relationships with their audience or costumers and that's how I intend to succeed.

When I first heard that we were going to have a course in finances, I immediately dreaded the notion as I’m not too fond of math. I think many people will agree with my statement as I’m sure it is not their favorite either. After stepping foot in the finance class, it was made abundantly clear to me that it wasn’t going to be your run of the mill math class. No, this class was about making money as well as the options we had to invest and make that money grow for us. Although there were ratios and other math subjects involved, it felt much better learning it from a business aspect as we all came to Full Sail to follow our dreams but to turn those dreams into profitable ones.
Turning a profit was only one of the many topics we faced in this class as we also learned about investments, loans, how to read financial statements, and many more. It was a breath of fresh air as I haven’t had too many classes focused on finance and even more importantly an emphasis on my own personal finances. I enjoyed every aspect of this class as I find myself using terminology that was not quite in my vocabulary wheel house before. I also found myself feeling a lot more comfortable reading financial statements from other business. A lot of the terminology and information listed is now a part of me.
I leave this finance class with more knowledge than I’ve had before and I definitely feel that from a practical and academic standpoint, Finance needs to be taught to students as early as late middle school or early high school. It only benefits the students as well as the country in general when citizens can easily describe to you what a Roth IRA or CD is. In my own opinion, kids should be able to read financial statements like they read Harry Potter books.

Business Storytelling & Brand Development Mastery Journal
My original goal for this course was to soak up as much knowledge and information regarding the building of a brand in order to develop my own brand identity. I was literally in a rut and didn’t know where to even begin as I didn’t have a plan or even an idea for a brand name. Therefore, the goal was to additionally move on from this course with better knowledge of branding and of course at the utmost a brand identity for my business.
From the course content, I’ve discovered that with a brand identity there should always be a story behind it as to draw your target audience in even closer. Not only did I have to worry about developing a brand but making sure that there was a compelling story to support it as well. Which wasn’t something I was even thinking about at the time I started this class. I was more focused on the Brand Development portion of the course but now I know why Storytelling is in the mix as well. I’ve also learned that there’s nothing wrong with having another business serve as a model or even blueprint for your brand to build and expand upon. It was educational to watch some of the videos throughout this course as those lessons won’t soon be forgotten.
I was never too keen on social media and using it to promote my brand but that’s the direction I’ll have to take if I want to reach my target audience and compete with the other businesses. Social media is also a great way to tell my brand’s story as to garner even more support from my target audience and clients alike. I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned in this course to every aspect of my life from my social media and the content that I post to how my company will grow in the future and be able to generate more clients or even support employees.
