Nature in the city

The reasoning I had behind this picture was that the trees were different heights. They were beautiful, natural palm trees growing out of a dirty, dead, gravel parking lot. The natural beauty of the trees also contrasted well with the manmade cityscape in the background.

I also took a picture of the fact that the Buzzfeed editor who was under fire for publishing the false report about Donald Trump is coming to Cronkite to give a speech on fake news. It is more of a thinking one than a visual one, however.

1 2 3 Selfieeee

In my series of selfies I look at what matters most in my life. For my first selfie, as pictured above, it shows my love for anything and everything that has to do with makeup - red lipstick being at the top of the list. The second selfie showcases my fam (aka my mom - my twin - my bff for life). The last selfie, equipped with a snapchat filter, is of my niece and I because she is the cutest.

three selfies

The three selfies represent my adventurous lifestyle of capturing unique photography. The image above was taken in Rio de Janeiro during the Summer Olympic games in August. I was in Brazil for 28 days and covered various ASU athletes for Cronkite News. The second image was taken underwater in lake Tahoe. I edited it so the water looks like it is going to explode. The third image was taken with a technique called “light painting”. You can alter the way a photo looks with in camera lighting techniques.

The Exit Selfie

The image shown above is a refer image from a selfie that was taken in the lounge area of my apartment complex. The selfie is of me reading a Memoir by Stephen King, Writing as a Craft. The image was taken the morning of one of Donald Trump’s confirmation hearings for one of his cabinet appointees. The second selfie is the same above mentioned photo, but the original photo with a filter added -- clearly noticed. The third and final selfie is in the same lounge, with my face expressing disgust and concern for President-elect Trump’s inauguration which was upcoming at the time. While there’s no true connection between the three photos, I felt that the refer image best represented how I felt at the time of the photos being taken -- wanting to simply “exit.”

Artsy Fartsy Austen

This is a teaser for one of my favorite selfies that showcases me in my intellectual state. Though the glasses aren’t mine (I have 20/20 vision), this selfie shows off my desire to think outside the box. Also shown is a glowing owl on my shirt, representing Drake, which in turn, demonstrates my love for music. The second selfie uses a charcoal filter and shows a lot of grey, which means I am different than the “black and white” world around me (whatever that means......it sounded a little better in my head.....). Headphones are shown in my ears to showcase love of music yet again. The third selfie was taken just because the filter looks pretty cool, but if you look closely, I’m on Twitter, a social media site I am absolutely obsessed with. -Austen Browne

Ludwig with no facial features

I took this selfie after struggling to tie a bowtie for 3 hours. The filter I used makes me realize that in another life I could have had a really well defined jawbone. The lack of facial features and eyes seriously creeps me out but what is more concerning is my lack of ears. They should remake the show “Kyle XY” and have a girl with no ears. They could call it “Kylie XX.” I’ve never not had a body part but I did have a surgery to remove a thyroglossal duct cyst. It’s a very minor surgery and only a couple weeks later I was able to climb a mountain!

Drifting Away

Devin Conley one day hopes to see the world. She has already traveled all around America and parts of Europe.

In between jet setting she loves living in warm Arizona and traveling by her Jeep with her best friend Taylor. She also works out at Arizona State University.

The gym is one way she relieves stress when she hasn’t gotten to travel and loves the energy it brings. With these photos one can see snapshots of her life and what brings her happiness.

Adventure Awaits

As I began to look into the vibrant orange sunset on a late December afternoon, I knew that I was at the right place at the right time. I was driving back from a full day of socializing during the final countdown of the Fall 2016 semester when I was blessed with the beauty of such a breathtaking Arizona sunset - I knew that I had to get my photo taken. The variety of my life - from my diverse hobbies, interests and passions - is often portrayed through occasionally whimsical photo moments capturing significant moments. In two other photos - one taken at the “A New Republic” art exhibition by Kehinde Wiley and one taken on top of Piestewa Peak - my passions, interests and hobbies are hinted slightly. I simply love, enjoy and appreciate hiking, the culture behind art, and vibrant sunsets.

Flower Child

My first photo was taken in Long Beach, CA near the pier this past October. It was my mother’s thirty-ninth birthday and we had just enjoyed a nice boat ride around the pier. My second photo  was taken just last week in my bedroom. I got a new camera for a Christmas gift and I was just playing around with the flash and settings. My third photo  was taken in Scottsdale near the restaurant R&R. My friends and I met there one Sunday afternoon so we could all have brunch together. -Terrnekia Collier

ME!

Yoga is often an outlet for many people. This “selfie” photo utilizes my best friend as a prop while we do yoga. The photo was taken using the self-timing setting on an iPhone. The distorted selfie that I edited is an array of yellow, purple and red shades. I decided on this filter because it was bright, and unusual. The final selfie is just a selfie of me. Blue Mountains

In this image, the desert mountains surrounding the Phoenix metropolitan area can be seen. The viewing point is from the top of Camelback Mountain. Although the mountains and surrounding terrain is obviously desert with brownish, red hues, in this picture, the mountains appear to be a majestic blue rising above Phoenix. The coloring can be attributed to the on-and-off, yet steady, rain and sun that engulfed the area on that particular day. Both a jacket and sunglasses were required to complete this hike to deal with the cold and sun glistening in your eyes. Overall, the picture is a testament to the beauty that one gets to experience when they hike Camelback. Tim Johns

Behind-The-Scenes

In this series of selfies, photographer, Anna Furrey captures herself in her elements. Whether it be her work, her hobbies or her passions, Furrey takes you into her world and shows you what truly makes up this aspiring business owner. In this photo, Furrey puts herself inside the life of today’s brides at local bridal shop, Brilliant Bridal. As she wears designer, Enzoani, Furrey captures herself through the wall-length mirror, a sea of gowns behind her. Representing her appreciation for the gowns, love for the industry, and her desire to be behind-the-scenes, making the magic happen.

You won’t believe these photos!

Come one, come all and feast your eyes upon these fantastic self portraits taken by the great Ryan Decker himself! The raw emotion captured in his dark work Pompeii shows how Decker uses music to escape the true struggles of his destitute world of Phoenix, Arizona. The Dreamer shows more of an optimistic side of Decker, who is eager to improve and report upon the world around him, exemplified by his pen and trusty laptop. And of course, who could forget his infamous Folly of Zeus, which portrays the faults of humans who are obsessed with sports such as football and derive pleasure from such things. - Ryan Decker

Titles are Hard

My whole world from the time I was 10... my four-legged companion, babysitter, partner and best friend. Together we traveled the country... the awards; numerous, the experience and lessons learned; abundant... the gratitude; endless. This giant grey friend taught me a level of confidence I never thought possible.... I’ve conquered fears and grown tremendously, I’m competitive, but gracious and I’ve learned that no challenge is too big and to ignore every doubt.-Chelsea Zillner

YU’s witch look

The picture you see is just a play around of an old selfie. I added a little gothic flavor into it, hoping it will harden the atmosphere and make it seem witchy like. I call this new edited photo “YU’s witch look”. The second selfie is taken for my friend’s photography graduation project “the girl living in the public restroom”. I am featured as the girl brushing teeth in the restroom. The third selfie is a recent selfie of me having tea with my friends. I went to the restaurant for the first time and I love it. Hope I can enjoy more delicious food there in the future. Yu Zhang
