started reading lays of the heathfire series because si forwarded me a post describing it as 'old people poly are trying to get out of politics and have a nice time together' but i cannot stress enough how much it is 'old people in queerplatonic AND found family relationships fumbling trying to talk to each other for years while trying to get to the point in their careers where they can go and live the rest of their lives in a house that they have already bought to make this dream come true while the events keep happening god everyone is tired of doing their job but also they love doing it. and also the events keep Happening and what if everybody wants to have a breakdown? there's no time have you seen the situation in nijan. we gotta do something about nijan your radiancy' and they also love each other and the world and people around them very much. and the moon trying to get her bf back with a lap dance or whatever is not even something major. yeah it happened. everyone was very surprised. nvm we have a council of princes guys we gotta focus

And still this description is wrong and oversimplifies everything and also just. Hrhghhhhh.

And also it very much IS 'i would love for the governments and the world to be like this' world building which i love with my whole soul.

ANYWAY yes please read lays of the heathfire series. Especially kip books aka 'the hands of the emperor' and 'at the feet of the sun'.

Maybe this is just old lady post of me but is nobody going insane about the fact that childhood media is just tiktok. and thats it. it isn't just that they don't have "classic" cartoons like spongebob, but there's no way a weird kid can develop a sense of taste. they just hit like on a FNAF lore video and then they get fed more by the algorithm.

I can give you the exact angry punk rock playlist that I burned from bearshare and limewire that defined my 12 year old political/environmental ideas while I sat on my rooftop in LA feeling enraged that there were injustices in America and refugee crises around the world. the same age I cut off family members who I debated on veganism. I used to go on youtube to watch visual kei concerts which developed my dance moves and diy meets hot topic fashion taste. It isn't just the disappearance of preteen fashion, but weird kids are dressing themselves in prefix "-cores" that they saw on Pinterest. Like they shop online by searching "core" because that's how they discover cringe interests, hashtags. Hashtags ARE what they believe subculture is.

So. Does nobody feel insane about this. No outdoors, no third spaces, no media, no kid fashion, no old internet, too much global warming and fascism to enjoy summer. What IS childhood now? Is it just tiktoks and roblox??? Do they feel sad if they don't know what they didn't get? sometimes I talk to my sister and feel this deep sadness crossing between wistful nostalgia and poignancy.

Just lost a few braincells reading an nyt article about gen z "treat culture" and I can't even fathom that this is a thing. We're living in a dystopian hellscape where someone spending $5 a week on a cookie is considered a wasteful brat because they should have just gone for a nice free walk instead and saved the $250 a year that roughly equals four days' rent. That's why these ungrateful kids can't buy a house, naturally.

I am ALL for free treats, like hiking or reading in the park. But at some point you can't budget your way out of poverty, and you will literally go mad if you deny yourself basic pleasures that are literally all around you. They even lamented that little treats could snowball into doing something absolutely unforgivable like learning how to play the guitar or buying concert tickets.

At what point do we just start saying out loud that living an enjoyable and fulfilling life is now only acceptable at a 100k+ salary, and if you're one of the millions of people unlucky enough not to be in that category you should just eat dirt and be grateful?

i just finished a EUREKA campaign where i played a vampire investigator named Florence. she was a standoffish, hyper-individualistic flapper girl trapped in a manor with a dysfunctional family in the 1920s and the stress was making it hard for her to function (there are mechanics for this.) so she ended up drinking from several people during the night (there are mechanics for this too).

another investigator called Manya (a skeptical resolute matter-of-fact jewish biologist) discovered she was a vampire after they got into some scrapes together. Manya (due to private personality traits of her own (there are mechanics for this)) decided to trust her and keep her secret, and it looked like they might be friends.

there was a hilarious scene where Florence got "stuck" in a well, which Manya knew full well she could walk right out of, but wouldn't because the other investigators were around. (in EUREKA players don't know things their investigators don't know. there are (surprisingly good) mechanics for this.)

until Florence killed and ate a young child (she was hungry).

when the crime was discovered, Manya was ousted by the other investigators for allowing this to happen. she set out into the woods with her elephant gun to hunt Florence down. she considered it her duty to put this monster in the ground, to keep her from eating anyone else.

so when Florence approached her flippantly, nonthreateningly, and told her openly and honestly what it was like to be a vampire (and hinted at what she had discovered about the mystery), Manya hesitated.

they had several traumatic conversations over the course of the mystery: about morality, and hunger, and guilt, and repentance, and how much it's okay to take from others in order to survive.

they conspired against one another. they were utterly dependent on each other. they shared some really fucked up hugs. they were completely terrible for each other. surviving together meant compromising everything that was true about themselves.

they saved the day. but the remained outcasts to the other characters. with her blessing, Florence drank from Manya's elbow, and used that strength to pick her up and carry her off into the night.

Florence drank from seven different people over the course of the campaign- including three main NPCs and one PC. her existence shattered the party and completely changed the course of the game. but the game wasn't about her vampirism. each of the other, human PCs had equally rich inner lives and made important, character-defining choices which collectively contributed to solving the mystery. there are mechanics for this.

this was the greatest campaign of a ttrpg i have ever experienced. EUREKA does vampires in particular (and fucked up characters in general) better than any game i have ever played. i cannot recommend it highly enough.

i think behrad has a tiktok account where he shows his favourite food places but he never says where they are, and it gets popular and everyone in the comments is like stop gatekeeping!! and some geoguessr guy works out a pizza in one of his videos came from a mom and pop shop which closed in 1992, and it becomes a whole conspiracy theory with people dedicated to tracking down these restaurants through time. 'revealing time travel through a tiktok' is a crime the legends are charged with by the time pigs

Genuinely still will be forever devastated they cancelled Legends of Tomorrow like that, absolutely no one could ever match their freak again or whatever the kids are saying, and I actually truly believe they only managed to get away with so much of their weird beautiful "fuck it, we ball" chaotic energy because the studio thought they already cancelled them and simply forgot they were still on air the last 4 seasons until the budget report showed up on their desk listing something like a cast moulding of John Cena's arms for Nate's evil robot clone and they were like hey wait wtf 😔
