this was not his brighest move , niao could attempt to himself . sneaking around the castle of the dragon queen in the dead of night . but , he reasoned with himself , there was little other choice . his accounce with her had been getting pushed back and none of the guards would listen to him when he spoke of a dangerous man . they properly thought him mad , as the city of meeren was full of dangerous men .

still , he knew that zhi-da was last seen here and he had to make sure the man wasn't still hiding about . he tended to leave bodies in his wake , as if tauting niao . he didn't know if the bodies around the city were due to zhi-da or the sons of the harpy he had heard about but he wasn't one to leave a stone unturned .

or wasn't , until two shadows drifted across the hall from a corner he was walking towards . with the shadows of spears in their hands he guessed they must be the famous unsuilled . he give himself a second pause before darting to the staircase to his left , taking them two at a time . he waited at the time to hear where they were headed and nearly sighed out of relief as they walked past the staircase . decided it was best to keep going , he turned towards the hall and headed down it .

only to stop at seeing a white-haired woman down it . he stared at her and dread filled him as he realized it who it was . he removed his hood , bowing his head at the queen .

" your grace , i offer my sincere apologies . "

he was lost .

daoji held no care in the world as he walked on , snorting every now and then . niao was sure it was the longma's way of laughing at his rider . he scowled , glancing around the landscap but only seeing desert around him . no hint of a city to be seen . at least he had filled all his waterskins so they would have something to drink .

" you may help at any moment , you know . " he spoke , patting the side of daoji's scaley neck . his mount only snorted again before stopping . niao's brows furrowed in confusion . " what are you- " a roar cut him off and his heart nearly stopped at the shadow that pasted over them .

a large , winged shadow .

daoji growled again as the earth beneth them shook with the force of the dragon landing . something froze in his chest and he had to hold onto the stadle to keep his balance .

his mount , his brave mount who didn't show fear , shook his tail and snapped his teeth .

" hello there . . . friend ? " he called out , unsure of what else to do .

despite growing up in the main city of his family's empire , niao does fell at ease in a forest . he enjoyed lazing about against a tree as daoji drank from the river , it's water so clear he could nearly see the bottom . a sense of peace settled over him - one he hadn't felt in years .

stripped of his outer layer , he let the sunlight rush over him as they peaked through the trees . daoji , the annoying beast he was , walked over and dropped to the ground next to niao . his giant white head landing on niao's stomach and the wind was sucked from his lungs .

" daoji , i can't breath ! " he was , of course , ignored as the longma got comfortable . of course . " you giant , scaley baby . " he grumbled but made no actual move to push daoji off . leaning back against the tree , he closed his eyes to finish enjoy the small break .

until daoji lifted his head and nudged him . niao tried to ignore him - if there was a real threat , daoji would be growing - and attempt to get some sleep . but the nudging countine and finally niao opened his eyes , scowling at daoji before glancing around as he spoke . " i swear i will skin you and sell your scales- " he started but was caught off guard at seeing a person on the otherside of the river .

daoji was still laying down , only his head up , so he didn't feel threatened . niao sighed , leaning his elbows on his knees as he smiled at the young woman . his sister would smack him for not standing but she wasn't here .

" hello , i hope we didn't scare you , my lady . "

The Amethyst Empress was the legendary eight ruler of the mythic Great Empire of the Dawn and one of its last monarchs. She succeeded her father, the Opal Emperor but was cast down and slain by her envious younger brother, who crowned himself the Bloodstone Emperor. According to the annals of the Further East, it was the Blood Betrayal, as his usurpation was named, that ushered in the Long Night.

niao watched them for a few moments , head cocked as he took in their stance . to his trained eyes , they stood as one and the most skilled often downplayed their own abilities . his lips twitched and he patted his own sword .

" how about a spar ? i was born and raised as a fighter , so i'd be happy to give pointers to a future knight . " he paused , a quick coming to his face . " or maybe you'll teach me a few ? "

he held back a snort , rolling his neck until it popped . with a grin directed at the light haired beauty , he brushed the dirt off of his torn robe . his back hurt but he paid it little mind while he glanced around for daoji .

" i must apoagize for my state of dress , my lady . i promise my people of yi ti are much more proper than this . " his sister would have his head if she saw how he was dressed in front of a lady .

a snort from behind him alerted him to daoji finally coming back . he turned his head and scowled at his steed , glancing at parts of his robe still in the beast's mouth . daoji came to stand next to him , his white ears flikering .

" forgive me , my lady - i am niao of yi ti . " he gave a bow of his head , one hand on the scaley neck of daoji . " and this is daoji , my steed or the one who makes sure the pockets of seamstress get filled . " he gestered down towards his torn outer robe .

thank the maiden-made-of-light that daoji hadn't torn his under clothes .

LONGMA : the dragon horses of yi ti

THE LEGENDS

legends stated they were created by the god-on-earth for his eldest son , the pearl emperor , when he succeeded the throne . for thousands of years , the longma - or dragon horses , as the west tended to call them - were seen as a sign of the emperor and his right to rule as a god .

but once the bloodstone emperor killed his sister , the amethyst empress , it's said that her court had taken the longma eggs and hidden them . writings say that the bloodstone emperor would experiment upon them and that is why many do not possess the wings of their ancentors .

over time , they became a symbol of yi ti and of the upper class . emperors , royals and nobles are known to possess longma . messengers may also have them , due to their swiftness .

APPEARANCE / OTHER

they are born from eggs , usually the mother will bare anywhere from one to three eggs at a time .

each longma was different but they all carried the same horse-like built with scales covering their bodies . some possessed hair like a mane from their head down to their tail , which the end could be covered in a tuf of hair as well . others could possess spikes down their back to their pointed tail .

they came in different colors - from black to brown to red and even , sometimes , blue or green . with their height , they can be as tall as six feet or even eight feet .

their teeth are sharp and able to cut through bone . they live off of a meat-based diet .

they cannot breath fire like the large dragons of old valyria but some of them do possess large wings that can be used to fly .

the lifespan of a longma is largely unknown . the oldest lived to be over 700 years old but most are killed in battle . while it is hard to cut through their scales , their underbelly scales are softer and easier to cut though . it's no easy task but can be done .

CURRENT

while it rarely happens , a longma may be found outside of yi ti . usually by nobles who are traveling . there is no worry that their longma may be stolen , however , as these steeds are loyal to those who ride them .

while they may have many riders throughout their lives , they will only have one rider at a time and will not let anyone else on them . they have been known to fly off , use their tail as a weapon , use their backlegs to kick people and even bite hands off .

DAOJI : NIAO'S STEED

daoji , according to niao's brother , is rather young for a longma . he is only 77 when niao choices him at the tender age of 8 . at first , the stablemaster's tried to ster the young prince to other longma as daoji was known to be tempermental and cast off anyone who attempted to ride him .

a beautiful white coloring with red eyes but no wings - he would be seen as a bad omen for a prince to have . but niao didn't care and while it took him a year , he finally got daoji to trust him and ride him . it was the proudest moment of his life and the two have been together since . niao rode daoji into battle against the jogos nhai and currently rides him in his search for chai zhi-da .
