i don't like this misconception that Reg only found joy and safety when he got with James. Like yes, james provided love and affection and understood reg really well and helped him a lot but so did reg's friends.

when Regulus first went to Hogwarts at age 11 he was cut off, and the skittles managed to open him up. They loved him, helped him, understood him just as much as James did, and Reg valued them for that.

the only thing james had that the skittles didn't was opportunity. he had parents accepting enough, darling enough to take reg in and care for him the way his own parents couldn't. but the skittles couldn't do that; their support couldn't reach to outside of Hogwarts because their situations were just as bad as Reg's.
