Belinda Qaqamba Ka-Fassie, artista e attivista drag, posa in una shisanyama – uno spazio comune dove le donne cucinano e vendono carne – a Khayelitsha, una cittadina vicina a Cape Town, in Sudafrica. Belinda, la fotografa e altre persone nere, queer e transgender hanno collaborato a un progetto per l'espressione della cultura drag africana. Lo scopo era anche quello di aiutare le persone africane appartenenti alla comunità LGBT+ a trovare le loro identità indipendentemente dalla loro storia e reclamare uno spazio pubblico in una comunità in cui sono vittime di discriminazione, molestie e violenza.

Il progetto racconta la storia del profondo disagio della gioventù algerina dei quartieri operai che a febbraio 2019 è scesa in piazza per protestare contro il presidente Abdelaziz Bouteflika, al potere da vent'anni. Le proteste dei giovani hanno ispirato il resto della popolazione dando vita al più grande movimento di protesta in Algeria degli ultimi decenni.

Trophies have an unusual history ranging from ancient military conquests through to today's mass-produced cups and statuettes. Trophies were originally collective rather than singular items: trophies were large, often jumbled collections of war booty, displayed in public to celebrate the might of a victorious general. Through proliferation, the idea of the trophy has been cheapened and even rendered negative. Where once a trophy was a token honouring exemplary achievement, the word is now used in a sneering way. David Ray's collection of small, roughly modelled trophies calls attention to the values underpinning a championship performance. They have the classic shapes of the traditional winner's cup, and none of the jarring geometry of today's modern, sculptural trophies. He suggests that sport belongs to the worthy. The trophies do more than declare a triumph; the anthropomorphic ceramics act out the process of becoming a champion. This narrative traces the passage from challenge, through endeavour and ordeal, towards triumph and self-realisation.

Cylinders

“My creative process has for many years led me to get my shapes thinner and thinner. I have taken one step at a time to achieve it, and now they have started to become really thin, like a veil between me and something else on the other side. Now the cylinder walls are so thin that you can see light through the white porcelain. At first my white cylinders were conceived because I wanted to include a sense of fragility and vulnerability, together with instilling strength and calmness. This two sided feeling is difficult to describe, but I have always had an internal feeling which I have tried to show in the concept and expression of these cylinders.”
