The History and Evolution of the Indian Postal PIN Code System
India is one of the largest countries in the world, boasting more than 1.5 lakh post offices throughout the country. Unfortunately, sorting and delivering mail could be a tedious process due to similar names across different cities or language barriers. In 1972, however, the Postal Department introduced Pin Code system which has since served to simplify this process ever since.
The History of Indian Postal PIN Code System
The Indian postal department created Pin codes in response to confusion over incorrect addresses, similar place names and different languages spoken among customers. This system was also implemented with a view to simplify manual sorting and delivery of mail at its intended recipient.
Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, an additional secretary in the Ministry of Communication and senior member of the Posts and Telegraph Board, was instrumental in initiating this system on August 15, 1972. His aim was to simplify mail classification as well as expedite its transmission and delivery.
His pioneering work with the Pin Code system has now reached its silver jubilee this year. He was instrumental in popularizing it and is widely credited as "the father of the PIN Code System".
What is the History of Indian Postal PIN Codes?
The Indian Postal PIN Code is a six digit numbering system which has been in operation since 15 August 1972. This unique numbering system helps postmen deliver letters and parcels to the correct recipient.
The initial five digits of a PIN code indicate a region (except for the functional zone for the Army), while the second indicates a sub-region. Furthermore, the third digit implies a sorting district within that region, while the final three digits designate which post office lies within that district.
A PIN code is divided into nine regions across India, each divided into sub-regions and then further subdivided into various states and union territories.
India currently has nine postal zones: the first digit indicates the zone, followed by two sub-zones within that region and finally, a sorting district.
The fourth digit indicates a route on which mail is delivered, while the fifth indicates the General Post Office (GPO) or head office in that region. Finally, the sixth digit assigns new delivery offices that are established within the same geographical region as existing ones.
Postmen receive mail and sort it before delivering it to the designated postal offices. These offices include either General Post Offices (or head offices) in a region, usually assigned the number 01; or smaller post offices situated within specific geographical areas that receive higher numbers.
