Thought too long about the 2018 BBC Les Mis adaptation and I’m mad about how badly it mischaracterises Valjean’s anger and his relationship with Cosette again arrhhghgr!!! Like he’s definitely a much more angry character when we first meet him (for good reason!!) but post-Bishop Valjean really isn’t an angry or explosive character at all. The ways he actually deals with his most urgent problems and intense emotions is through quiet avoidance, repression and self harm. His relationship with Cosette also has plenty of dysfunction to explore without him being an aggressive or angry father, and I think it’s kind of boring that the only way some writers can think to portray a dysfunctional father-daughter relationship between the two of them is Valjean being violent towards Cosette or sexually attracted her.

I definitely see the appeal of portraying a dangerous or aggressive Valjean to remind an audience that he’s still a force to be reckoned with, but it’s never anything Cosette does that pushes him to that point, it’s Javert and Thenardier. Thenardier threatens Valjean, and more importantly Cosette, in ways that force him to switch from his normal passive avoidance to being explicitly threatening on multiple occasions, and Javert does the same thing when he threatens Fantine and refuses to listen to any of Valjean’s attempts at calm reasoning.

If you want your scary edgy Valjean scene the requirements to get there are 1) he has to feel cornered with no alternative options and 2) someone he cares about who’s safety he’s responsible for has been harmed or threatened. When Valjean’s own personal safety is at risk he always defaults to the flight part of fight or flight and he only ever gets really angry when he’s protecting someone else.
