Hello! Baragaki Scans is a group dedicated to the scanlation of Ginhiji doujinshi :> About/FAQ | Projects | Discord

Note
out of curiosity, how many people do you guys have? i hope youre all taking care of yourselves, and im definitely looking forward the next release, whenever it is!
Thanks so much for the care and support! We've been pretty busy with IRL stuff but are still doing well, and we'll continue to churn out releases bit by bit!
As for team size - we have 3 core team members who have been with BGS since the start + 2 relatively newer members who are currently working on projects! There are also a couple other members who have joined us along the way but are not currently active/have left.

i haven't been here in a while, but i'm so happy to see there's a lot more projects than before! thanks so much for all your hard work!!!
Thanks for the support! I'd say the bulk of our projects were from the first 3 years, we've slowed down a lot the past few years TvT

6 Years of BGS
Yet another year has gone by and we've somehow made it for a double release! We've finally managed to finish another of Nagisa's compilation books too after so many years! Just 2 more to go + all the other books we have TvT
After these past two years, it's pretty clear that we now really only have enough bandwidth for birthday + maybe anniversary releases... But we'll continue to do what we can to bring you the best quality releases, and we really appreciate everyone's support all this while! It's really what keeps us going 🙏
As usual, we're looking for help with our releases (especially translation), do consider reaching out to us via any of our communication channels if you're interested!

Update: Loving Drown has already been translated! You can read it on MRM here~
-JJ
Hi, Baragakiscans. I've followed you for a while, and your work are amazing!! Could you translate Gintama dj – < Drug > and < Loving Drown > by Hanasusuki/ Nanaoemu ? It has only been in Japanese that I couldn't understand the context, but the artwork was really good.😭😭 (Sorry for my intermediate English skills. I'm not native speakers, but my english can be improved by reading your translation. Keep doing that great work! Love you guys from the bottom of my ginhiji heart. ❤️)
Thanks for the support! Unfortunately we don't have those books and we still have a lot of books on our backlog, so it's unlikely we'll ever get to them at this point :")

Hello! I'm not sure how you'll take this suggestion but here goes. Scanlation takes a lot of time, effort, and love (I've done the scanning, translating, cleaning, and typesetting by myself), so I was wondering if you would consider using AI for cleaning and translation then refine the details and language as you would manually? We could have technology on our side and if that's not something against your own code, then maybe that could work. Thank you for all your work until now! Love you all!
Thanks so much for asking this! As someone who happens to work in the tech industry and is also passionate in localisation, I have a loooot to say about the usage of AI in the anime/manga localisation industry. I tried to keep my response scoped to your question but it still ended up being really long, so uh...
Short answer is: We won't ever use AI for translations, but we might explore AI tools for cleaning/typesetting to see if they can speed up the process.
Long answer after the cut:
Translation Localisation
There is so much more to translation than just converting the text from the original language to the target language. There's also the element of making sure that the translated text is easy to read for the target audience, which includes supplying relevant cultural context where necessary, rewriting entire chunks of dialogue, etc. That's why I prefer the term "localisation" instead!
I firmly believe machine translation (MTL) being able to speed up translation is a myth, especially for the comic format and for a context-heavy language like Japanese; there is so much context that MTL would be unable to pick up on (e.g. who is speaking what, what the drawings depict, etc), which can lead to entirely wrong translations, much less dialogue that flows naturally. Translators would more often than not have to spend more time and effort checking the translations and fixing issues than if they had just translated the dialogue themselves.
This is why MTL is often so frowned upon in the scanlation community; most MTL groups would at most edit the dialogue to flow better but not correct any mistranslations (likely because no one in the group knows the original language well enough to correct them in the first place), leading to subpar end results.
Cleaning/Typesetting
I do actually see a possibly valid use case for cleaners/typesetters to use AI tools to deal handle the tedious stuff (e.g. erasing text in speech bubbles) so that they can focus on the trickier stuff (e.g. redrawing) though. I'm less of an expert on this front, so I'm not sure how much time it would actually save (if at all), or if it's similar to localisation in that it brings more harm than good. I'll bring this up to our cleaners and typesetters and see if they are willing to explore this!
Conclusion
Ultimately, regardless of whether AI is used, I believe care should still be put in to check and ensure that the final work is of the best quality it can be! Which unfortunately the general localisation industry is doing less and less, as companies replace localisers entirely with AI to maximise output quantity... :")

do you guys take requests or do you decide within the team what dj to work on next? i'd love to see a TL of oni to shio by syaku :( miss syaku so much
We do not take requests, only the occasional raw scans donation, and what book we work on next is entirely up to us! Feel free to ask us if we have plans to work on any books though :)
We do plan to get around to every Syaku doujin eventually, including "Oni to Shio", and as much as we want to do that ASAP, we also have many other books from many other artists that we have in our backlog and only so much free time + severe lack of translators T_T We know we've been taking a long time to get releases out, but it's hard to juggle between IRL responsibilities and scans work without burning out ;-;
Please do support artists by purchasing their works, regardless of whether or not we’ll be scanlating it! Waiting for our scans instead of purchasing the books directly is the opposite of what we hope to see and can also add on to our stress levels :")

a bit of a technical question (if you don't mind answering!), how do you guys get your raws? i have a few doujins lying around that i've been wanting to scan, but i'm not really sure how to go about doing that without wrecking the physical books....
Here's a comprehensive scanning guide for anyone interested - I think it explains the process better than I ever can :p
Scanning is way more time-consuming than one might expect, especially if you want to ensure highest quality scans! For us, it can easily take 1h or more per page :")

BGS 5th Anniversary
Good news: we've made it past the 5-year mark! Somehow!
Bad news: unfortunately we didn't complete a release in time for anniversary release this year...
In these 5 years we've gone from churning out 40 books in a year to barely making it in time for 5/5 and 10/10 T_T Our core members have all been busy with IRL commitments; personally, I have to admit that I've been so swamped with work that I've barely managed to check in on everyone's progress, much less work on any translations... At the rate we're going we definitely won't be able to finish our stash of doujins in this lifetime 💀
We urgently need more JP-ENG translators to help with our releases! If anyone would like to take on the challenge, do consider reaching out to us via any of our communication channels or checking our recruitment post for more details 🙏
Thanks so much to everyone for sticking with us all this while; we're so sorry for the lack of updates in recent years and we'll do our best to continue making progress on our releases, however little ;v;
