With some references to 164 and the fruit and a reminder/disclaimer to everyone that sorpeli can only ever exist a minimum of 7 years into the future.
Rayla said it was double date.
Callum makes it feel more like an interrogation—although of whom, Soren's not really sure.
Dinner is set and the moon is full. There are candles on the table and fireflies flitting around the balcony overlooking the river. Soren's pretty sure it's the first time Opeli's really done anything like this ever, let alone since she dropped her hood and circlet. It's nice. Romantic. Or, it would be, if Rayla didn't look like she wanted to murder her husband and if Opeli didn't keep shifting awkwardly under Callum's stare.
"So... How long has this been going on exactly?"
Rayla swats him. "Does it matter?"
"I mean, a little, considering—"
"Stop."
"I just need to know—"
"You don't need to know anything."
"But—"
"A few months," Opeli cuts in at last. To her credit, she just looks tired but Soren has never wanted to punch Callum more than he does now. Those months were trying, and the last even more so, considering what happened and what they lost. Soren will never forget the sight of blood on Opeli's skirts and he imagines, neither will she, and the curiosity, though warranted, is becoming more and more unwelcome.
"So even before—"
"Obviously," says Soren shortly. "We know how it sounds."
There is a pause. Callum looks between them, still clearly trying to process the dynamic in spite of the weeks it's been since he found out.
Rayla only rolls her eyes and turns to Opeli. "So have you read—"
"How come you didn't tell anyone?"
"Moon and Stars, Callum—"
"Why do you think?" asks Soren sharply. "It wasn't technically allowed and you and Ez were being idiots on top of that, and even now you're being kind of an—"
"Soren." Opeli sets a hand on his arm and Soren bristles and shuts his mouth. "It wasn't a priority," she says simply. "There were other problems to deal with. Our relationship was hardly something that needed focus when you and Ezran were having issues of your own. And when I—" Her voice wavers. She cuts herself off. "Our problems were our own to solve."
Rayla gives her a look across the table, and Soren knows now that she was the only one Opeli told about the brief little life that could have been, there and gone again before even he found out. Opeli only returns it with a little twitch of her lips and Soren finds her hand under the table and squeezes, just so.
"You could have told us," says Callum quietly. "I know... It sucked for a while. But you could have. We would have helped. You're both family, aren't you?"
Another pause. Opeli breathes in. "Thank you," she murmurs. "I'm sorry that we didn't."
Callum shakes his head. "Don't apologise. I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you didn't think you could. And I'm sorry for before too. I guess I just don't wanna see either of get hurt." He looks meaningfully at Soren, and Soren relents.
"It's fine," he says, waving him off. "And you don't have to worry about us. We'll manage."
"But you will tell us the next time you need help, won't you?" presses Rayla.
"Yes," says Opeli, chuckling softly. "We appreciate it. Thank you."
The mood over the table lifts. Callum raises his goblet to them both. "To you guys then," he says. "I hope... The worst is behind you, and there's nothing but good stuff ahead."
Soren snorts. "Here's hoping," he chuckles, clinking his goblet with everyone else's. "Cheers."
And then, because Callum can't help it probably, he smirks and adds, "But seriously, which one of you do I threaten if—"
"Stop it," snaps Rayla, swatting him again. "They're going to be fine. Aren't you?"
Soren glances at Opeli, the light in her eyes, the rosiness in her cheeks, the little upward tilt in the corner of her lips. She glances back and smiles, locking her fingers tight with his. "Yeah," he says, pressing her knuckles to his lips. "We'll be just fine."
