Behold, crystal lycan!
I was in the Discord server talking about how I headcanon Zoe's infection to have a more defensive than offensive modus operandi in the sense that if you bite her you get infected instead of her getting infected, and so I had to do this.

Zoe would have been such a good addition to RE8 honestly. Zoe has a long lasting reason to want to beat Mother Miranda into the ground and Ethan has his new one with Rose. Zoe would get absolutely fucked up mentally by House Beneviento when Donna inevitably shows her hallucinations of her family or in Castle Dimitrescu when the daughters and Lady Dimitrescu herself turn into the same crystals that were growing all over her body. Zoe still hasn’t gotten closure. In the Baker Incident Report, Zoe wants to know more. She wants to avenge her family. Mother Miranda created Eveline, she is her mother, she is the reason her family is gone. Zoe has a bone to pick with the whole village and she would have absolutely owned it there with her mouldy friend guy

“They’re dead?” Eveline squeaked. No, no. They couldn’t leave her. They would never leave her. “They can’t be dead! I fixed them! They’re not supposed to die! They’re not!” she cried out in desperation. She didn’t want to be all alone again. She couldn’t handle it.
Instead of letting herself feel scared, her face scrunched up with anger. “Liar! Liar!” Eveline shouted. She tried to kick Zoe, but her arm moved instead of her leg. Ugh! What happened to her body? “Put me down!” she ordered.
Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea; she definitely couldn’t walk in this state. And anyway, Zoe wasn’t responding to Eveline’s tantrum the way she wanted. She pouted. She would cross her arms if she could.
Reluctantly, though she didn’t have much of a choice, she let Zoe carry her to the car. She stayed quiet, but glared at her all the while. Finally, her curiosity got the better of her and she spoke up in only a slightly accusatory tone.
“What happened to me? What happened to you?”
Zoe decided that the talk about mortality should be left for another time. Especially because she wasn't completely sure if she could use the talk she remembered her parents giving her as a kid, the one that went on about how everything eventually died and people went to Heaven but they couldn't come back to life, anymore. After what she'd seen the past couple of years, Zoe wasn't so sure death was the end, or if Heaven existed.
But Hell was definitely real, and she was determined to leave it behind once and for all.
She didn't realize she'd been holding her breath for a bit until they reached the car and she released a sigh of relief that had her lungs ache in relief when she exhaled air back in. Zoe placed Eveline on the passenger seat, securing the seatbelt, and climbed into the driver's seat. She went slow, not wanting the engine's sound to attract undesired attention from the officials still around or whatever might still be lurking in the area, but once they reached a paved road a ways away from the limits of what was once her family's property, she sped up.
Eveline's question made her brows furrow. She had to hold back from saying that Evie happened to her.
"I mutated, but not like those mold monsters you made," was the second best thing she could come up with. "I'm guessing you did too."

Zoe couldn’t trust anyone. Blue Umbrella wasn’t to be trusted, neither was the government, and even less so the BSAA. People weren’t much different, she could count those she trusted with the fingers on one hand: her uncle Joe, Chris Redfield, and Ethan Winters; the last one she didn’t even know the location of, and Chris… well, he still had hopes in organizations being the clue to saving the world.
She wasn’t going to let them get involved in what she was about to do.
Getting into her family land was somehow both easy and complicated: easy because her uncle Joe’s directions helps her find a way in through the perimeter set by the government, and complicated because or was the swamp. Her family had been smart, they’d hidden Eveline away where they knew nobody would find them, but Zoe knew where she was: the abandoned church. Her daddy’d told her when their consciences were both trapped in that other place; his infected body left her in the basement where nobody would find her because of all the monsters that had plagued the graveyard. But now her daddy was gone for good, and so were the monsters. It was only Zoe and Eveline.
Zoe was going to put an end to this, once and for all.
Getting to the basement was easy when you knew the path, and nowadays Zoe was the only one who did. The place was covered in that sickly black mold, but unlike what it’d been like back in the house, it was dry, falling apart upon being touched. The outer layer of the cocoon was no different, Zoe was able to rip it off with her bare hands. The inside, however, was gooey and flexible. She had to use the hunting knife she’d brought to cut through it, cutting through until she spotted the hair of brunette hair, placed her hand on it and tilted it back to see the face of the one who’d caused her so much pain.
And it was just a child. It was easy to forget the fact that Evie was just a child, one who Zoe now knew had been created in a laboratory, kept away from any and all things children should be give, treated like she was just an experiment for whoever actually pulled the strings to play with, showing no regard for her as a living bring, much less as a human being.
The knife clattered to the ground and Zoe cursed herself through gritted teeth as her arms dug deep into that black mold until they wrapped around Eveline’s body, pulling her out of the cocoon.
Someone had to pay for what happened to her family. But it wasn’t Evie.

Anger still burned inside her, and so did all that welled up grief that she'd had no choice but to keep locked away during the months spent in the hell her once home had been turned into by the little girl right in front of her. And yet, Zoe couldn't bring herself to harm a child. However, she also wasn't in the mood to beat around the bush the way one should when dealing with a clearly disoriented child asking for those who she considered her family's whereabouts.
"They're dead," Zoe said without hesitation, picking the knife back up only to return it to its holster. "And we will be too if you don't stop calm down and let me help you."
Zoe ignored the aggressiveness, teeth clenched as she picked Evie up and held her close, giving her a warning look. "If you try anything..." she started, but decided to leave it at that; half because right now the priority was to get out of there, and half because she didn't know what to say. If Evie was an adult, Zoe would have killed her, she would have at the very least slapped or insulted her, but she didn't have it in her now.
All she could do was get Evie out of here and back to her car, drive as far away and hide from everyone who knew of the girl's existence.
Without the infected roaming around, it was pretty easy to make it out on foot. It took Zoe just a bit longer than on the way in because of carrying the weight of Evie with her, but it wasn't like the girl had ever been heavy. She prayed to her parents to watch over her, to let her do this. It's what they wound have wanted.
The girl just wants a family. That's what her father had said, even after he'd been trapped into a hive mind-like prison and his body was used to commit atrocious acts, he still showed mercy to the child. So Zoe had to too, to honor him.

I'm curious, what are your headcanons for calcified Zoe? Do you think they cured her or is she going through something like what happened to Ethan in Village?
First of all, anon, I wanna kiss you for asking this. I've been wanting an excuse to talk about this.
⚠ This post will contain spoilers ⚠
Okay so, I don't know exactly what was happening to Zoe in End Of Zoe. But I do know what wasn't happening to her: she wasn't being calcified. How do I know this? Cause we see what it's like when someone gets calcified, it doesn't give them time for anything, there's no if or but, it's an instant death, and there's no coming back from that. Most importantly, we see Zoe calcified.
Tumblr media
This is what she looks like in the "Bad Ending" when Eveline gets her despite Ethan choosing to give her the cure. Then there's her in End Of Zoe, weeks after the good ending and after not being given the cure by Ethan.
Tumblr media
This is nothing like her calcified form. It's a slow process that even after weeks hasn't covered most of her body. She's alive, she looks healthier than even her normal form, and she has a different kind of mold growing over her, along with white, crystal-like growths protruding from where the mold's gathered at the most. There's also the fact that, in the End Of Zoe DLC trailer, we get to see the earlier stage of her transformation, and her skin seems to have absorbed some of the plant life around her: moss, leaves, etc.
Tumblr media
Now, what's my headcanon for what happened to her? I think what happened to her is what happened to Ethan in RE Village, but with a twist. They both started struggling with the cadou three years after being infected, but while it was making Ethan's body fall apart, it had the opposite effect on Zoe. It put her in a coma, kept her alive despite her not eating anything for weeks due to said coma, and she was able to regain consciousness only after uncle Joe gave her the cure, but it didn't cure her.
Tumblr media
It made her regain control over her body, but the mold and growths remained. It wasn't until weeks later at the Blue Umbrella facility that she was no longer covered in it (I wonder how the hell they got it off, that had to hurt), and even then, she wasn't back to normal.
Tumblr media
My headcanon is that, given the fact she was never under Eveline's control and so Eveline couldn't control what the cadou inside Zoe did, it evolved inside Zoe the same way the black mold did inside of Ethan —since now it allows him to just press his cut limbs back into place when in RE 7 they had to be stapled back—: as a way of self preservation. Its focus went from protecting the queen of the hive mind (Eveline) to protecting its host (Zoe), making Zoe the "queen" of this new kind of mold —I'm calling it White Mold—'s hive mind, and that's why Jack and the other black mold infected creatures became more aggressive towards her, when through the main game they just seemed to ignore her.
As to why it happened... well, I personally believe after over three years of eating and drinking God knows what in the mold infected bayou, Zoe was probably at the brink of massive organ failure, and so the white mold took matters into its own hands to ensure her —and its own— survival.
