like. if you read any of his letters (may we be spared to meet on earth is such a good book, I'd recommend it if you're into doomed arctic expeditions or even just enjoy reminders that people two hundred years ago were still people) you know that fitzjames comes across as a pretty funny, kind, and above all human guy, just some dude who you could probably have a really nice chill time down the pub with. he was good at his job, yes, but he wasn't a Wellington or a Shakespeare or whathaveyou. he's literally Some Guy doing what was a really exciting thing for the time.
and it's not so much that he died under horrible circumstances, that much is a given. but it's the fact that so many people a hundred and seventy years later are losing their shit about him being found. think about that.
real fitzjames probably would never have expected to be recognised like that. no-one really thinks they'll have such an impact that two hundred years later. and yet he did - not because he was a great general or an inspiring poet, but literally because he was just A Guy that we found out about and got emotionally attached to.. imagine telling this random thirty-something that centuries later people would be so happy to see his body uncovered. imagine his reaction. I'm a thirty-something and I'm not a particularly famous individual, and the thought gets me properly choked up. he was literally A Guy, albeit one in unusual circumstances, and we still care so much about him. that's such a big thing.

Possibly one of the best scenes in Black Sails is when Silver is doing his little villain monologue about Solomon Little and his plan to get the crew to need him. And Flint just says in the most normal conversational tone ever, “good luck with whatever,,,This,,,is”. This show is actually a sitcom

what are your thoughts on judas? why do you love him so much?
The myth of Judas is like every story in the Bible: it depends on how you read it.
There’s the first story, the one everyone knows, in which Jesus is divine and Judas is the betrayer and he is condemned for it. But what isn’t said is that there needs to be a betrayal; that the story hinges on it; the passion can’t play without it. And so the question becomes: if it’s all destined, if it’s fate, is Judas culpable? Was he lead to the betrayal - did he ever even have a choice? The question of Judas is the question of free will. This is why Jesus loves him most, keeps him close, never hates him - he’s part of the godhead. He knows that he’s not the only one who is sacrificed for salvation. And doesn’t Judas get the worst of it - reviled for all eternity, hated by all, written down in the book as The Betrayer? He doesn’t even get a legacy. He doesn’t get worshipped; he doesn’t even get to be forgotten. For someone to rise up, to ascend, someone else has to take the fall, and that’s exactly what Judas did.
The second story is the historical one, the one that says Jesus was just a man, and that he and Judas knew exactly what the fuck they were doing. In this story Jesus is the leader and Judas is his right hand, his zealot, the one who believes that the cause, the salvation of his people, is more important than anything else, more than anything Jesus might want, more important than any human bonds, any love or dedication. They’ve read the book. They know the stories. They know that the only way to make their revolution last is for Jesus to become a martyr. They make the myth because they are just men and the story, the story will last far beyond them. The story lasts forever.
And so we come to the Gethsemane, only it’s under different lighting. There’s this idea, somehow, that Jesus is the innocent, that the betrayal is a blow - but he knows what’s coming. In every version, he always knows. And that changes things, it complicates things. It changes the two of them from good and evil, profane and divine, into what they were and what it was - two men giving up their lives in the hope that they could bring hope to all the people who came after them. The hero and the villain because they created themselves that way.
I’m partial to the second story - because it’s messier, it’s more devastating, it’s more real to me. It’s a story about loving something so hard you can’t live without it and giving it up only for something even greater, a higher cause - and becoming unable to look at yourself in the mirror afterwards. That’s the thing about Judas - he wants too much, feels too much. And what’s more human than that? He is, all at once, the purest disciple, and the hardest; the most faithful, and the least; the one who loved Jesus and the cause enough to betray them, and sacrifice his own soul in the doing. He is the best of us and the worst of us, all at once, and what that makes him above all is human, in a way Christ specifically is not, in the messy and fallible way that we all are. The church wasn’t built on a rock; it was built on a kiss.

I started this James portrait for theterrortober's Creature prompt, but it kind of took on a life of its own. Idk, I was just thinking of the multiple facets of James and the man he "built to live inside of" and how his false self became almost a creature of its own.
The style of this is heavily inspired/referencing the art of Nicole Rifkin, one of my favorite illustrators.

Trans Terror Week 2021
Tumblr media
We’re back for another year of Trans Terror Week, brought to you by mods @jamesclarkross, @solomontoaster, and, joining us for the first time, @boilyerheid, who created this years’ graphics and will be running our new Twitter page!
Trans Terror Week will run from November 14-20.
The rules are the same a last year, however, this year we have a new FAQ page (for the mobile accessible FAQ go here) to help with clarification. Thank you to everyone who took the survey earlier in the year to help us make the event better and more inclusive.
Rules and Reminders:
This event is for anyone who is trans, nonbinary or is currently questioning their gender. Our goal is to uplift trans content creators in the Terror fandom and we encourage cis creators to show their support for their trans compatriots.
There is NO restriction on type of content: art, fics, edits, playlists, videos, everything is welcome!
November 14th is also for Creator Spotlights, make a post highlighting your works and we’ll give you a boost!
Please tag your works #transterrorweek/#transterrorweek2021 and/or ping us @transterrorweek to make sure we see your stuff! I recommend using both as a fail safe since Tumblr loves to hide notifications and posts.
Fics can also be added to the Ao3 collection. Simply search for “Trans Terror Week” when posting your fic or follow the link on our blog. Our FAQ has instructions for posting anonymously.
Prompts:
This years prompts are all from poems. As last year, there are two sets of prompts one gendery and one Franklin expedition related. The gender prompts come from a selection of poems by trans, nonbinary and two-spirit authors and the Franklin prompts all come from David Solway’s poetry collection Franklin’s Passage. More information on the poems can be found on our Prompts Page.
Day 1: the way yr hand/cups my belly like water - Summer Haiku | reciting/the litany/of wind and ice - This is a story
Day 2: some comparable/soft bodied animal that drifts - Exquisite Corpse | the plea disguised as transcript,/tragedy presenting itself as information. - The words are fitted
Day 3: Scratching at the name you will inherit - It is velocity that penetrates | Are you ready to deal with polar mirages? - Ask yourself these questions
Day 4:  I heave/with your waters and all/they have unmoored - Lake Champlain at Flood Level | We keep the ship clean/for the lady in the long white dress - You can’t eat saxifrage and harebells.
Day 5: Is a mistaken carcass a place for memory? - same title | whether burning on re-entry/or freezing at departure - We trace identical descent
Day 6: the body is not the only ocean - The Year You Bloom | I am walking into the snow/that blinds the eye and makes everything clear. - I am walking in the direction
Day 7: I had thought to be the one to murder you - Dear Gender: An Elegy | a bill of provisions is an empty promise/and words do not sustain us in extremity. - They would gladly have traded the Passage
