Girls Scouts encounter Bigfoot the most frequently. Part of their oath is to keep him a secret because he’s very kind and makes up 30% of their revenue due to his fervent love for thin mints.

So I have a genuine question about being able to like... I don't know, be able to even consider an indigenous "identity" , and I am so sorry if you're not the person to ask but I don't really know anyone who won't give me an unbias answer.
So, I'm not "fully" indigenous, I grew up relatively insulated from any tribal identity due to well America. I have an easily traceable lineage, and am even in contact with some of my indigenous family. And I mean like at most two generations back on both sides of my family.
But, since I'm so white passing, I'm kind of afraid to claim any semblance of an indigenous identity. I'm genuinely afraid of like trying to reconnect with that part of my family and heritage because I don't want to seem like some white chick trying to appropriate a tribal identity.
Like it feels like something I don't have a right to, and something I don't know if I'm even allowed to reconnect with due to the circumstances of how I was raised and the culture I grew up in.
So like, I guess after all of that yapping, how do I even approach that sort of thing? I'm in this space of feeling lost because I don't know what I should or even can do.
so first thing’s first- you are correct. i am not the person to ask about this. nobody is, actually. you are the only person who can answer this.
some perspective:
- reconnection is an ongoing journey, not a destination you will eventually arrive at. the community you seek is about deepening connection, and i encourage you to think about it as such.
- lineage and quantum doesn’t mean shit. i know people with low percentages who are pre in touch with their community than people who are “full blooded.” what matters is connection. you say you’re in contact with your indigenous family- by that do you mean you have a relationship with them? if you don’t, why not? what’s keeping you from that? if i can offer any advice, start here. develop and warm those relationships.
- this is important- explore your desire to reconnect. is it because you want to be closer to your family and community? is it curiosity? is it simply to feel like you’re part of a collective? i don’t think real reconnectors are looking for an identity to appropriate, but also, genuinely explore your desire to reconnect. it’ll inform your journey a lot.
- on the topic of being white passing: this is something you need to acknowledge. especially if you are reconnecting with folks who do not have that same privilege. in my experience, it’s likely conflict you encounter will be because of this. NOT because you are reconnecting. you are still indigenous and have a right to seek out your people. be aware of how your lives and positionality differ. that being said, your skin won’t be the thing that keeps you from reconnecting. your fear and insecurity will. move with awareness. but move with purpose.
this is the most comprehensive advice i can offer, as someone who has seen some people through the beginnings of their reconnection journeys. best of luck to you.
