               ‘   fluent in sign language. ...gorilla sign language.   ’

a one-off line meant to be a subtle nod to GORILLA GRODD. contrary to the most popular interpretation of the line, my barry allen is fluent in sign language. the mention of gorilla sign language was simply an inside joke — one that only barry is in on.

barry started learning sign language early on — well before he began speaking, even — from his mother NORA ALLEN, a deaf education teacher who was also fluent in asl. simple stuff at first. basic things that nora could speak and sign to him multiple times throughout the day to help him pick it up. and when barry began speaking and started showing a rapidly growing vocabulary, the sign language he was learning from his mother also grew more complex. by the time of his mother’s murder, barry was as fluent in asl as any gifted nine year old could be expected to be.

the loss of nora allen did result in a stagnation of barry’s fluency. the foster family he was placed with didn’t have anyone who knew asl, and any desire to continue learning it on his own was overwhelmed by the grief of losing both mother and father in a single night. barry didn’t resume his education until after he was in high school, learning it primarily on his own with some help from his french teacher after finding out that she knew asl as well.

at the time of the events of justice league, barry is suitably fluent in asl again. he doesn’t tend to sign while speaking like he did as a kid, but he will do so occasionally out of habit (see: the dostoevsky scene but with the slight tweak of barry actually properly signing hello before leaving).

as a jewish writer in the rpc, i feel like there are some things that aren’t necessarily ignored so much as they are little discussed that i feel are really important to consider… not just in writing a jewish character but also when considering making a character who is not canonically jewish? jewish — be it through personal choice of conversion or conversion within marriage.

denomination is important to your muse’s upbringing and experiences within their jewish communities. while in more recent and modern times there is a decline in inter-religious prejudice? it does exist. for example:  i myself am reconstructionist jewish and to some more orthodox denominations, that is viewed as too modern and ‘not jewish enough’.

please think about if your muse is practicing or non-practicing and the degree of which they would be either of these things. whether it’s that they do or don’t go to temple. whether it’s that they only celebrate the high holidays. whether it’s that they follow a kosher diet or not. all of this is important to consider.

in more modern times, which is not to say only in modern times, jewish mysticism has become more popular — this includes lurianic kabbalah and some commentaries within hasidism [which is rather orthodox and a particularly unique section of judaism.]

it is extremely and especially important, in my honest opinion, that if you’re going to write or make a muse ashkenazi jewish or sephardic jewish you choose a face claim who is one or the other respectively.

no matter what you are doing within the realms of writing or exploring jewish characters and or writing your character as jewish? do. your. research.
