U.S. Central Government Shutdown in Wisconsin, Foreign Investors Continue Selling Taiwan Stocks; TWD Weakens Against USD, Breaking 33 Mark in Early Trading
The U.S. federal government under President Trump has reportedly shut down operations in Wisconsin. Meanwhile, foreign investors continue to offload Taiwanese stocks. Coupled with the strengthening of the U.S. dollar in international markets, the Taiwan dollar (TWD) depreciated sharply against the U.S. dollar (USD) in early trading today, breaking the NT$33 psychological barrier and hitting an intraday low of NT$33.019—the weakest level in over a month.
President Trump is set to announce further tariff details in early April. Ahead of the official announcement, Trump has already targeted countries with significant trade surpluses with the United States, starting with Canada, Mexico, and China. Now, tensions have escalated with the European Union as well. Trump's ongoing tariff threats have heightened market concerns over a potential economic recession, triggering volatility in global financial markets. The four major U.S. stock indices experienced another round of sell-offs yesterday, with key levels breached once again.
The Taiwan dollar opened this morning at NT$32.79, down by 0.1 cent, and quickly broke through the NT$33 threshold, touching an intraday low of NT$33.019. This marks its lowest point since February 3, when it hit NT$33.158. The weak trend is expected to continue hovering around the NT$33 level in the near term.
So far this year, foreign investors have maintained a net selling position in Taiwan stocks. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), foreign investors sold a net NT$50.594 billion in January, NT$165.982 billion in February, and NT$271.189 billion between March 1 and March 12. There are currently no signs of foreign investors returning to Taiwan equities. As of March 12, the Taiwan dollar has weakened by 0.55% against the U.S. dollar, ranking as the second weakest currency among major Asian currencies this year.
