Hey there! I've been following your comic for a while now, and have been enjoying it thoroughly - I wanted to reach out in regards to your writing for the characters. :3 Sonic is really letting open a lot of negative feelings towards Ivan in your recent page. How do you strike a balance between that free-spirited jovial attitude he usually musters, and the moments where he turns dead-set serious? Where does it come from in your interpretation of Sonic? Additionally, do you have any general recommendations on writing for the cast? I'm fairly anxious about sounding canon-adjacent as possible in my works, so it halts a lot of my creative momentum.
Sonic had given Ivan a chance to prove that he truly regretted what he had admitted to doing (murdering someone).
It was when Ivan proved he was far more sorry about getting caught than he was about ending someone's life that the metaphorical gloves came off. That's what made that switch happen.
To the additional question: I dunno, a lot of dialogue and stuff from Sonic games and shows and comics live rent-free in my head. I'd say just, like, indulge in a ton of Sonic media and pay close attention to how the characters behave and speak. I would avoid anything written during the Meta Era, however, if you're looking for stuff that sounds genuine. So, that would be Colors, Generations, Lost World and Forces.
Not to sound like a theater kid, but I think what's really helpful for writing these characters is to try getting inside their heads. How would SPECIFICALLY Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, etc react to a situation, or being told something, or whatever.
Sometimes it helps me to imagine my favorite voice actor for that character saying whatever line I wrote. Does it sound natural for them to say that? If not, adjust until it does.
My go-to voice for Sonic is Jason Griffith's Season 1 Sonic X voice. That's why I write him with a lot of...

So this is the first part of a pretty large current project, a (roughly) 50-page-long comic about a lone mercenary exploring the ruins of a lonely space colony, looking for survivors, and trying to figure out what happened.
As an extension of the famous ‘show-don’t-tell’ philosophy, this comic will not contain any dialogue whatsoever. The only words that do show up will be those on screens and signs, and the title on page 7. There will be lots of action however, lots of story, and hopefully lots of emotion.
The comic is set in the universe of the ‘Metroid’ games, but if you aren’t familiar with those, don’t worry. None of the lore is relevant, and in due time, you’ll see for yourselves everything you need to know.
I hope you enjoy.
(All subsequent pages will link back to here, but not between themselves. This done for ease of editing on my own part.)
