Jinshi said that Loulan has made herself to be the the most villainous woman of her time. I'm curious to know how true this is, so breaking Loulan's image down from an outsider's perspective.

A new consort enters the rear palace due to her father's connections with the late Empress-Mother. There's definitely some strategic political power play here, but this sort of thing is about common enough, nothing special here.

This consort is extremely flashy and extravagant, including lots of makeup, changing fashion, and an army of attendants. In this sort of time, she may seem as materialistic and shallow. This especially contrasts Lady Ah-Duo's easy going and humble nature.

(Not so public) instead of treating the consort crown as something treasured, she casually tossed it to her attendant after the ceremony

(Not so public) despite being one of the only four high rank consorts, she has no interest in Maomao's lessons in engaging the emperor, meaning she is not committed to her duty as Consort

She is not friendly with any of the other high ranking consorts, or anyone else for that matter. Combined with her extravagant nature and her body language, she comes off as materialistic, cold and haughty

She isn't particularly nice or forgiving either (see ice cream incident where there were comments on the eunuch getting a beating for failing to deliver ice and about offending a high-rank consort. The fact that this consort wld be offended by it in the first place says things)

Anyway, down the road this materialistic and haughty consort disappears at the same time that Gyokuyou's attendant and poisons tester, concurrent daughter of the top military strategist, is kidnapped by a known spy/assassin

To add insult, she dared to put a fake in her place, which is basically spitting in the emperor's face at this point

Shortly after, her father, who put her in that position in the first place, was discovered to be embezzling money and amassing steel and weaponry materials in secret. And he has also disappeared

So not only does her personality suck, but she is also now a traitor with no regard nor respect for the country, emperor, or fellow consorts. She and her dad has been secretly preparing for war and has now kidnapped the top military guy's daughter as hostage

As the troops take over the fort, the hostage was rescued but injured and mistreated.

Her clan is found to be using new high tech guns

She threatens the Moon Prince at said gunpoint and kidnaps the Moon Prince.

She injured the Moon Prince (tis but a scratch but its a big thing)

Her father is now dead and she killed her own mother with the gun - i.e. shes a psychopath at this rate

At the end of it she showed no remorse, was dancing and laughing in the snow - extra psychopath

So, thoughts? I would say a great villain for sure, but i'm not too sure about greatest.

Also I don't understand why Loulan doesn't have the clan name Shi in her name.

The Roof Dance: Maomao vs. Shisui

(Spoilers) While I don’t feel like the light novel presented Shisui’s exit as a prolonged “dance” like the anime did, I thought it was interesting how parallels could be drawn between her final dance and Maomao’s of the season one finale. Whether this is intentional or not, who knows, but I couldn’t help but think about it watching Shisui’s exit.

Both danced on a roof of sorts, under the stars, it was a send off (Maomao for her mother, Shisui for herself) and Jinshi was present for both. To me it’s the details in how they differ that are fascinating.

Maomao’s dance marks the beginning of her mother’s life as a wife and no longer a courtesan. Shisui’s marks the end of her life as the doll of the Shi Clan. Jinshi arrives at the end of Maomao’s dance and is able to catch her when she falls. He is present for all of Shisui’s dance but does not attempt to catch her, as he realizes her dance is the finale to her family’s performative end.

Their roles are also reversed. Where Maomao looks like a normal woman on a daily basis, she takes this opportunity to wear makeup and doll herself up. Shisui on the other hand is used to being presented as a consort so is covered in makeup, unmarred and beautiful but as she’s dancing she’s got blood on her and is dirty from the explosions.

To me all of this can point to the differences in the two women, where Maomao’s life is marked by beginnings and Shisui’s is marked by endings. Shisui is freed by her “death” and Maomao is freed by embracing the changes life brings moving forward. Just my thoughts, could be totally off but I kept thinking about it when seeing the final dance.

When Public School Arc ended in June 2024 they announced the news of the Emerald Witch Arc in Black Butler panel at Anime Expo in July but this year they didn't announce any Black Butler panel at Anime Expo 2025 so I doubt we'll get a new season.

so are we getting the boys band arc now?
