I was thinking about hobbits the other day, and I kept catching myself making the assumption that two male hobbits couldn’t get married.

Part of that might be how the ending sort of frames it like Sam has to choose between marriage and Frodo? Also Bilbo is looked at as odd among hobbits, and I felt like part of that was that he never married, which implies some sort of policing of relationship choices amongst hobbits. In general, hobbits do seem like they police each other’s choices -any hobbit who doesn’t want to live the traditional, quiet hobbit lifestyle is treated as a bit of a freak. Though of course, whether enforcing tradition means enforcing heterosexuality depends on the culture.

I know some of this is just the era the book was being written in. Obviously Tolkien was never going to end the book with Frodo and Sam explicitly getting married or explicitly being a polycule with Rosie.

And to the extent that Tolkien based the books on his own experiences in war, and coming home from war, he was basing them on experiences in a homophobic and heteronormative society.

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t imagine hobbits being homophobes per se. Mostly just like, really heteronormative? Like the other hobbits would keep asking when a male hobbit was going to find a wife, and vice versa, but if he was like “actually I’m going to spend my life with this other male hobbit” they’d be like oh okay. Though they might be surprised he doesn’t want biological children.

(I’m sure there’s trans hobbits too, but that could be its own post.)

Someone asked me if I thought other groups in Middle Earth have same-sex marriage, and my brain was immediately like Elves: yes Dwarves: yes Men: no. I didn’t even realize I had thought about this.

Anyway, it seems like most people voted yes, hobbits do have same-sex marriage. So perhaps I will have to reconsider my hobbit assumptions.

Moving between countries takes a lot. It’s both exhausting and financially draining. We were lucky to have enough resources to get here.

But now we have to restart all our working processes, find new suppliers, and make fresh prints.

All of this takes time and money, and both are in short supply for us right now 🥲

Last week I took sketch requests on Instagram! Here are a few of the hastily-drawn results.

(The prompts for these were “favourite non-A/C characters,” “love confession,” and “children summoning Crowley”.)

Bella Swan and Daniel Molloy would be best friends.

Both of them found out vampires are real and immediately decided that the rest of their existence would be devoted to dating vampires and becoming a vampire. They will no longer consider humans as a dating option at all, and if they cannot become a vampire they will simply seek self destruction.

They even use the same exact line on their boyfriend/would be maker. In Queen of the Damned, Daniel says to Armand: “The cells in my body are subject to deterioration, to a process called aging.” And in Twilight, Bella tells Edward: “I’m dying already. Every second I get closer, older.”

You can say what you will about how different they are; Bella being straight while Daniel is a hot mess of a bisexual, Bella having religious reservations about sex while Daniel is immediately ready to engage in kink with any vampire he meets. I don’t think these differences would get in the way of their friendship.

I think they would both be thrilled to find someone else who gets them, and then they’d spend many happy hours gossiping about their melodramatic vampire husbands and the crazy adventures they’ve had with them.
