before modern surgical and chemical abortion methods were pioneered, one older method of abortion was sticking a foreign object (such as bark) into the vaginal cavity and leaving it there until it caused an infection that hopefully aborted the pregnancy. this often resolute in complications such as sepsis, permanent reproductive harm and death for the individual seeking the abortion. that is why people saying things like “well, they had abortion back then too” on my post about historical infanticide is irritating me. they did. the abortion methods were often horrendously dangerous or ineffective. limiting abortion access only limits safe abortions.
