Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity)
New architectural style, or commonly known as Modern architecture, emerged in many Western countries in the decade after World War I. Where Dr. Walter Gropius, one of the most highly regarded pioneer in modernist movement, saw that Architect cannot hope to realize his ideas unless he can influence the industry of his country. It was based on the "rational" use of modern materials or synthetic materials--steel, glass and concrete--, the principles of functionalist planning, and the rejection of historical precedent and ornaments. This style has been generally designated as modern, although the labels International style and functionalism have also been used.

It begins with a plea for thinking out new beginnings for the problems of the building in terms of materials and tools, and the problems with relates to art and industry. With this, they consider practical solutions for which synthetic materials became prominently available. These materials made it possible to erect wide-spanned and all but transparent structures which previous ages was inadequate of constructing. It becomes a trend in today's generation of building structures wherein the separating function of wall was made limited and transfers its whole load to concrete or steel frameworks but here in the Philippines, only few were able to make build this kind of architectural design because of the culture and the economical status we have.

Let me take you shortly to the historical architecture of the Philippines.
In the past, churches were built by Spaniards and the designs have been based on pictures of European churches but more and more the Filipino character of these churches has become apparent when it comes to its labor and materials. Early structures were composed of wood and bamboo, so they easily caught fire. Then stone structures were built, but with earthquakes, they collapsed. Later, churches made of stone were provided with buttresses for support. Then Genaro Palacios designed the prefabricated all-steel San Sebastian Church in the 1880s. You will notice that little by little, Architects adopts the modern architecture principle from the West and also the use of synthetic materials was starting to emerged.

In contrast to the romantic atmosphere of Spanish colonial architecture, early 20th century architecture in the Philippines was functional, rational, and seemingly plain. A new phase of Philippine architectural history has began. United States began in establishing an American-style government, urban planning and architecture that will served the needs of the Filipinos in education and public services. They started surveying to two cities, Manila and Baguio.

As centuries passed by, the use of ornaments became more limited in churches, government structures, commercial buildings and etc. As one most influential modernist architect Adolf Loos, “The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from utilitarian objects”. Overall, the Modern and International style was out of a fresh input of thought that can be established with fitness for purpose and use. That becomes the beauty of the whole structure. Also the concentration on concise and economical solutions in reality for the problems of our country was the new conception of it. This lead us to have a more stable and ever progressive engineering works that suits to our tropical season that will drive us to a more enhanced standard of living, and soon, a superior economy in Southeast Asia.

Utopia: A Glimpse of Escolta Street in Year 2118
They say it is impossible to have seen perfection in our society today, but I believe that the every mistakes we commit from the past and in the present, will lead us to reach the greater success in the future.

For the past years, people have dreamt of a perfect world. A world free from unhappiness, conflict, judgment and hunger. This is Utopia. A place where the government, laws and social conditions are of ideal ones.
I chose to represent the Utopic Vision of Escolta Street in year 2118 as I recently experience the beauty of its gloriuos past.
See the link below for quick Escolta street trip!
As you could see, there are a lot of establishments or condominiums beside these heritage buildings in Escolta street. They have overpowered the prestigious view that lead some people to give less appreciation for its history. Therefore, I incorporate the Utopic idea in this place to once again renowned its richness and architectural beauty.
I preserved the facade of the buildings in order to remind us that "this place is the Escolta street where you just overlooked before", oh just kidding. You will notice the trees and other plants around the structures to promote green architecture and cleanliness in the society as this street was parallel to Pasig River, plants will help to get rid of the dirts in the air and in water. While the gigantic structures above the ground will blocked the condos and other unnecessary structures overpowered the street.
This place will definitely be back to its gloriuos past, where people make it as their top to-go place and be known to the whole world once again.

Ang Aking Buhay
"this is my life, i study, i enjoy, i come home, to the One i love"

Duro's Armor
Get yourselves ready for the battle! Duro's Armor is out now! 🏹🛡️⚔️
This personalized headdress was for Mr. John Ray Duro. It was inspired by the Spartans' warrior helmet. Spartans were known to be the most feared military forces in the Greek world back at ancient times because of their bravery, strength and fitness.
I chose this warrior helmet for our Alter-ego activity in school because my partner, Mr. Duro, is also a very brave man that "no hunger, nor danger" will ever stop him from doing what he wanted to achieve and has similar body shape to the Spartans.
Materials used:
soft brown folders
maroon folders
scotch tape
stapler
scissors
tape measure
