Exploring Brisbane on the City Cat Ferries
One of the iconic tourist attractions in Brisbane is the City Cat ferries. They are the perfect way to see the city from the Brisbane River. They are particularly popular during the autumn to spring period of the year when many southern visitors come to the city on holidays. These ferries are catamarans and are painted in the colours of local sporting teams as well as one being painted to depict the history of the local indigenous people. The City Cats move up and down the river from the University of Queensland in the west to Hamilton North in the east not far from the river mouth and Moreton Bay. The return journey takes just over two hours. You can sit in the open areas at the front and rear of the City Cats or sit comfortable inside a large spacious cabin and watch the river as it meanders through the city of Brisbane. Simply riding the ferries up and down the river is alone an enjoyable experience. You will see many different styles of homes, boats of all types plying up and down the rivers plus many small cross river ferries. There are many places where you can catch the ferry and they arrive every 15 minutes during most of the day. Along the way, you will sail under many bridges, pass through the central business district, cruise pass the City Botanical Gardens and New Farm Park with its rose gardens and, at Hamilton North, see the twin Gateway bridges as they soar high in the air to allow ships to pass upstream. Here, too, you will watch many planes land or take-off from the nearby Brisbane Airport. If you are into dining, there are several precincts where you can leave the city cat to get a meal. These precincts are spread along the river from Park Road, Milton to South Bank; Howard Smith’s Wharf under the Story Bridge; Oxford Street, Bulimba; Brett’s wharf at Hamilton and at the last terminal at Hamilton North. If you want to entertain your children along the way, then stop at South Bank. Here there is a beach with a pool patrolled by lifesavers; the Maritime Museum; The State Art Gallery plus the State Museum. This is also the venue for the Performing Arts Complex. On the opposite of the river to South Bank is the main city business district with its city mall with its many shops as well as the casino. If you want a special treat, catch a City Cat going down river just before dawn to see the sun rise over the lower reaches of the river. Even more spectacular is to ride the city cat from Hamilton North up the river as the sun sets. You will see the city skyline with Mount Coot tha in the background change colour and as the night falls the coloured lights of the city will excite you. Finally, the great thing about a day on the City Cats for a family is that the cost is low. So if you are a visitor or a local, give a journey on the City Cats “a go”.

Greece is in fact an amazing place to visit but not just for the beaches, nightlife, and Mediterranean feel. Are you a fan of art or architecture? Perhaps both? Visit the Acropolis of Athens, a 5th century BC temple monument on a small hilltop. Find your way to the Parthenon, the iconic 5th century BC Athenian Ruins of a Temple. I assure you, these structures are breathtaking, and unless you are a celebrity; it might be the only chance you get to witness history like this. You can also visit the Acropolis Museum for a bit of ancient history. This museum actually features ancient treasures within it. Again, it is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for many.

A Day in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island
An easterly drive on Long Island’s Route 25A reveals an opening in the foliage just over the Nassau-Suffolk County line on the left side and a splotch of water known as “Cold Spring Harbor.” That water, of both the fresh and salt types, defined it, sustained it, and became its raison d’etre. “Water is the defining characteristic of the place now called Cold Spring Harbor,” according to Robert G. Hughes in his Images of America: Cold Spring Harbor book (Acadia Publishing, 2014, p. 7). “To the indigenous inhabitants, it was known as Wawapex, or ‘at the good little water place.’ The European settlers of the 17th century named the area after its abundance of freshwater springs.” Like a mirror, that water reflects its changing color and character as it does—slate gray on cloudy days, cobalt blue on clear ones, and orange and reds near its shores on autumn ones. It also reflects its history. It served as a draw and became the means to sustain the lives of those who settled there. Only a few hundred yards beyond this view, the road arcs to the left and threads its way through the hamlet, which is very small. But so, too, are gens. This one sparkles through its harbor and exudes its history through its nature, museums, and restored buildings. It is a living example of how its purpose has evolved as a result of time, transportation, and technology. And a day spent here will demonstrate that. Cold Spring Harbor History: Located on Long Island’s North Shore-specifically on the western edge of what was once Huntington’s 1653 First Purchase-Cold Spring Harbor arose because of its water artery, providing the many means by which it developed over the next three centuries. Power, the initial one, turned the mills that cut the locally grown trees, supplied the wood to construct farms, and ground the grain they grew, all made possible by the dam across from the Cold Spring River that John Adams erected in 1682. Aside from these saw and grist mills, there were also those that wove and created paper. “Dams at the edge of large ponds and lakes generated power to run grist, saw, paper, and woolen mills where local grain, trees, and wool were transformed into food, logs, paper, barrels, and woven materials, such as broadcloths, blankets, and coverlets,” according to the CSHFHM News: The Newsletter of the Cold Spring Harbor Fire House Museum (Winter 2015). Water also positioned Cold Spring Harbor as a delivery port, its next significant role, when an Act of Congress appointed a surveyor of customs on March 2, 1799. He was entrusted with the “power to enroll and license vessels to be employed in the coasting trade and fisheries and to enter and clear, and grant registers and other usual papers, to vessels employed in the whale fisheries.” Devoid of any appreciable land-based infrastructure, the country relied on rivers and seas for passenger and cargo transport during this time. In the case of Cold Spring Harbor, water served as its channel for schooners to deliver rice, coffee, sugar, wood, coal, sand, and gravel to New York City and destinations beyond, specifically those along the East Coast and as far as the West Indies in the Caribbean. The integral role Cold Spring Harbor played in coastal trading is reflected by the 99 ships registered there in 1883. And its waters became the threshold to the whaling ships that sailed even further afield.

The Long Island Museum
Located on Route 25A in Stony Brook and a short distance from the still-running Grist Mill and the historic Three Village Inn, the Long Island Museum offers visitors an immersion into the area’s rural past through three modern exhibition buildings and five authentic structures sprawled across a nine-acre campus. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1978 because of its excellence in exhibitions, programs, and collection care, and one of the country’s few Smithsonian affiliates, it displays American history and art with a Long Island connection. Tracing its origins to the Suffolk Museum, whose original Christine Street building stills stands today, it was established to preserve, exhibit, and interpret artefacts by five founding members at the end of the Great Depression: Ward Melville; his wife, Dorothy Bigelow Melville; Robert Cushman Murphy, a prominent naturalist; Winfred Curtis, a local doctor; and O. C. Lemphert, an insurance broker. A growing collection, along with the addition of carriages in 1952, soon prompted the search for new headquarters, which took form as the History Museum on one side of Route 25A. New to the then-named “Museums at Stony Brook,” it was old to the area. The site was once the location of the D. T. Bayles Lumber Mill, whose lineage stretches back to 1874 and which operated until 1955. Melville purchased the building at that time. “Ward Melville always wanted Stony Brook to be a village similar to the ones found in New England,” according to the Long Island Museum’s website. “The Long Island Museum was inspired by this premise and museum grounds soon resembled a New England village as local historic buildings were carefully tucked onto the grounds… Since 1939, the museum has grown to become a leading institution on Long Island and the only Smithsonian affiliate in the region.” THE HISTORY MUSEUM The History Museum, which serves as the Visitor’s Center and gift shop, is the location of changing art exhibitions. Its most recent “Fire and Form: New Directions in Glass,” for instance, encompassed some fifty works by eight contemporary artists, whose variety of approaches, inspirations, and starting points demonstrated the near-infinite nature of sculptural creation. The separate Cowles Gallery, named after Sharon Cowles, who once lived next to Dorothy and Ward Melville and recently made a significant contribution to the museum, showcases works from its permanent collection. THE DOROTHY AND WARD MELVILLE CARRIAGE MUSEUM Cornerstone of the Long Island Museum complex, which is located across Route 25A, the 40,000-square-foot Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage Museum occupies the site of the former Stony Brook Hotel and depicts the pre-motorized purposetime era by means of more than a hundred horse-drawn vehicles displayed in eight galleries. Its centerpiece, which is visible as soon as the visitor enters the building, is the “Grace Darling,” a 45-passenger, beautifully decorated omnibus originally pulled by a half-dozen horses. Richly upholstered and spring-provisioned to reduce wheel impacts on unpaved trails, it was employed on excursions to Coastal Maine between the 1880s and the early-20th century. The “Going Places” Gallery features carriages that were commonly used on Long Island, along with a fiber optic map that illustrates the development of regional transportation routes. The Wells Fargo Coach, one of its exhibits, is representative of the vehicles used by Wells Fargo and Company, whose transportation services were vital to the country’s westward expansion. Inaugurating overland passenger service in April of 1887, it assessed the then-astronomical fare of $275.00 for the Sacramento, California, to Omaha, Nebraska, route. The “Carriage Exhibition” Gallery, based upon the 1893 World’s Fair transportation building, highlights the opulence wealth could inject into a carriage.

Summer Vacationing in Montenegro
Montenegro literally translates to Black purposetimes and it is located along the Adriatic Sea much like Croatia. Located in the Southeast of Europe, Montenegro is a hidden gem that often goes overlooked or overshadowed by Croatia and larger nations as a vacation spot. However, I find that works in ones favor as there are not floods of people visiting there on a daily basis. This gives one easier access to all that Montenegro has to offer, and trust me, there is a lot. Montenegro often goes overlooked as I mentioned before, however, some of the structures and sights here are just as astounding as say, those in Greece. With a breathtaking coastline and beautiful cliffsides it is actually quite reminiscent of Greece-after all, it is in the Mediterranean. There are many towns here to see and much to do, so let’s begin by perusing the different towns and sights you simply cannot miss. Click the link for booking ideas!
