SWISS ARMY MAN (2016)
A movie by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Head roles played by Paul Dano as Hank Thompson and Daniel Radcliffe as Manny the corpse.Â
GENRE: Comedy, romance, adventure, drama. DURATION: 1 hour and 37 minutes.Â
RATING: 4/5 STARS Recommendation: a NEED to watch if youâre in the ages of 13-30Â
NOTE: I 100 percent reccomend to watch this for everybody. Itâs criminally underrated and needs more attention.
RESUME
So to start off, this movie sure did take an odd way to tell that itâs okay to be weird and different. Thatâs like the major pinpoint of the story that I really enjoyed.Â
In the movie we follow the stranded Hank Thompson and his adventure of the discovery of this almost magical dead corpse of who we later get to know as Manny, and their struggle to get âhome.â
A lot of odd things happen, as mentioned that Manny is a somewhat magical dead body, where the story takes the aspect of taking some of the most natural yet socially disgusting functions as farting, throwing up, etc, and tries to show that it is completely normal - and perhaps itâs what people need to accept before having to get closer to one another.Â
The plot thickens as the two buddies spend more time together on a newer island that is seemingly populated, yet hank - with his phone that is on 10 percentage - canât seem to get a signal. On the island, Hank discovers that Manny is starting to move and even communicate.
Manny starts building his intelligence of his own based on what Hank tells him about life and what it holds. They have small disturbing talks where they pick up subjects that most people are afraid to talk about - which ends up telling us the story of Hanksâ past and perhaps how and why he ran off.
At some point, the two find a bikini magazine, where Hank tells Manny why and what it is while also explaining him a story about what love could be for him. While Hank explains, Mannyâs supposed p3nis starts rotatiing and moving as if it was a compass - which leads the two on the road to finding âhome.â
I will leave the rest of the story unresumed, because i really think that you, reading this, should most definitely hear and see the story itself, because it surely influenced me - in one of the most weird ways.
PICTURE AND SOUND
The movie it self is very easy on the eye and perhaps more or less aesthetically pleasing because they do not alter any colors or light to be lighter, darker, saturated, etc.
And the same goes to clipping and effects - itâs neither underwhelming or overwhelming in any way, itâs pretty manageable in general.
Sound that is used are all natural taken sounds and the backtrack music really helps giving the story the right mood, because most of it is actually paul dano and daniel radcliffe jamming to a beat and singing songs in acapella.Â
ACTING
So I merely watched this movie because ive been getting into Paul Dano movies - and let em tell you, I was NOT disappointed.
Both actors delivered the characters so well that at most points you forgot that it was acting - it was TERRIFIC.
The chemistry between the two really shined through and made the bond between the characters even more significent and special.Â
STORY
The story is different but lovable in so many ways. In my opinion they did a beyond magnificent job of delivering a message clear and sharp.Â
I didnât notice any plotholes besides the fact of it being an opening end movie, where perhaps it helps us give the movie itâs own meaning while we try and figure out what happens to the two characters.Â
OVERALL RATING
The movie was a solid 4 stars in my book - perhaps closer to the 5th star. It was odd. It was moving. It made me more or less think but in a way that it didnât influence me to the point of âwanting to change my lifestyle,â but in a way that I took the message into the back of my head with a smile.
Boy oh boy did I laugh a lot. I watched yesterday - and I still canât stop laughing.Â
Though I will note that I was so pleasently suprised by the fact that I actually liked the movie, In the start I had the urge to click off because it was perhaps too weird, but as the story went on i started to care for the characters - A LOT.Â
Please do go watch it!! more than worth it for maybe shits and giggles but also for enjoying the little things in life :)Â
