The Annabel Ward pseudo-possession scene is almost definitely my favorite scene in the show. The only thing I wish is that the writers had kept the book detail that Lockwood is the one to suggest the experiment. Regardless, it's my favorite because of Cam and Ruby's acting. Lockwood's emotional safety switch doesn't go off. It is one of the only times in the show that he looks genuinely scared. And of course he does. He is watching the girl he loves disappear in front of his very eyes. And her eyes—they are distant, glossy, empty. She isn't herself. She is someone long dead. And worse, suddenly she's reeling in pain. Suddenly she's yanking away from him, pleading with him, whimpering that he's hurting her. But it's not him—he isn't hurting her, he would never hurt her, there is nothing he can do to stop this but she's pleading with him, pleading with him—and then she's not breathing. There are no hands on her neck, but she's not breathing. And he's really scared now. This is dangerous now and he's calling her name and she's not hearing. He's desperate, you can see it in his eyes. This whole time, they knew she was too deep in. She's too strong. And frankly, they are over their heads with this listening/touch thing. And if someone is going to get hurt, it's Lucy.
And he can't let that happen.

Something I love about the dynamic between Lucy and Lockwood is that Lockwood always has the right thing to say to charm the people they encounter while Lucy is blunt and often accidentally rude, but when interacting with each other, Lucy very much charms Lockwood while Lockwood always seems to say the wrong things to her.

Snow’s obsession with trying to convince every discrict 12 boy dating a covey girl that their girl doesn’t love him like his didn’t.
C’mon now, she wrote you a song, invited you to covey areas, ran away with you then dumped your ass at the first red flag.
Just another example of a loser man not taking responsibility for his own actions 😔

I’m haunted with the thoughts of how long it took the covey to realise that Lucy Gray Baird might have died.
They found her missing one day , and her lover Snow is gone too. They miss her , but they are glad she could run. Travel, like they were meant to be.
How long did it take them to realise that Snow wasn’t with her. How did they feel when they found out that Snow was in the capital. Do you think they had a moment of doubt , wondering if she went to the capital with him?
Do they even know she was betrayed by him? Do they slowly realise that Snow might have killed her? As they see him progress into the man he is.
She truly lives up to her name.
“Yet some maintain that to this day
She is a living Child,
That you may see sweet Lucy Gray
Upon the lonesome Wild.
O'er rough and smooth she trips along,
And never looks behind;
And sings a solitary song
That whistles in the wind.”

Does anyone think about how the other covey members , went with Snow and Lucy Gray to the meadow , to the lake? How he was the man that helped their Lucy Gray survive.
Then one day they find out Lucy Gray is missing , but Snow is also gone. So maybe the ran away together?
Then they see Snow in the capital , rising to power. They watch as he becomes president. And they watch him take 2 of their districts children every year to kill them. And then they watch as their Lenore Dove is also killed because of Snow.
And then they’re finally able to travel again, but at the cost of what was their home for 75 years. And there in the new town , he plays his fiddle. And sees at last how Snow falls.

You know what I love and just applaud Rachel zegler for doing so well? Making Lucy gray’s mannerisms and tone slightly different whenever she’s performing for the cameras e.g the scene at the zoo when she was being asked questions
More than that I love that in every scene with Coriolanus she doesn’t do that tone or mannerisms EXCEPT THE LAST SCENE SHE HAS WITH HIM BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARS
Like everything about it from the tone of voice to the way that she said “I’m not made out of sugar” to the way that she smiled was just so eerily similar to the way that she acts when she is preforming for an audience
Like I cant be the only one who sees how different she acts
Look at that! that’s a woman PREFORMING if I ever saw one
Tumblr media
But what’s so important is that SHE IS preforming, she’s made her choice, she knows she has to leave but she also knows that she is talking to someone who is extremely volatile and has shown that he can kill so she has to bide her time and play it perfectly to disappear like she needed to
So she preforms to stay alive, just like she did in the games, Lucy gray’s last performance was actually this conversation- not any song.

although katniss is our protagonist and main character i think there's actually a much more fitting throughline when it comes to the presence of covey girls and their acts of rebellion.
lucy gray
lenore dove
primrose
i don't often see prim mentioned when it comes to covey lineage (most likely because her character is so aligned with their merchant mother in the original trilogy) but all three of these girls actively haunt the narrative.
lucy gray is the ghost whose songs of resistance endure in district 12 long after her name is forgotten. lenore dove paints her posters across the district and its haymitch's promise to her that forces him to keep going, keep fighting back until someone 'just like him but luckier' comes along to do what he couldn't. primrose is reason that katniss volunteers, she inspires a love so great that it defies the odds and brings her sister home.
they all have an immense strength but also an inherent gentleness - their love of animals whether this is lucy gray's snakes or lenore dove's geese or prim's refusal to hunt animals (not to mention lady and buttercup) - they are all drawn to creatures that are not widely seen as valuable or lovable.
they share a deep sense of optimism, each believe in the power of hope to transform one's circumstances. they each believe that a better world is not only possible but they are willing to take action to make it so. lucy gray uses her songs and performances, lenore dove engages in acts of sabotage and vandalises property. prim learns how to heal and chooses to enter a warzone in order to help people - in a world governed by violence, prim is first and foremost a healer.
and ultimately they are all taken from those who love them - they are girls frozen in time, forever filled with colour and light. three generations of covey girls, each doomed by their connection to the games.

the tragedy and beauty of lucy gray and maude ivory and lenore dove who all loved so much that they payed for it with their lives. gray and ivory and dove, neutral shades describing girls who were colourful and daring and bold. singers. rebels. musicians. covey. three colours so very close to white, but ultimately not. almost, almost white, like the snow, but not quite. gray and ivory and dove, living in parallels and dying in parallels then resting next to each other, in a pretty row, a gradient, forever and always just beyond snow's reach.
