I am back again because I ALSO remembered this bit in episode 5 of season 7

*caption a bit wrong should be an out in there* because the idea that the first thing the professor does in a new area is put stuff in his mouth like a toddler is hilarious and adorable but then I thought about his sorta baby/toddler traits he has and realized that holy crap he IS technically a toddler so here is a comic inspired by that fact incase you don’t get what I mean

I do wonder how Ryan would feel when he realized that because of the whole rebirth and hatching thing his coworker/friend is technically a toddler(but also like a million years old at the same time too?? Professor’s existence is crazy qOq)

(Also yes he’s chewing on a bottle of Phorgedytol because I wasn’t sure what else to have him use XD)

I just randomly remembered that one of Sprats weird cult things was like hating or not eating beans right(I think it might’ve been just a certain type but pretend all beans for this) which then led to the thought of; “does…does that include jellybeans?” So behold:

like part of me almost wonders if that was legitimately an idea behind making him an antagonist because if so that’s incredibly funny and great

I got hit with a sudden burst of PH drawing energy after a nice mini conversation and I made a drawing I’m actually very proud of!

First off, do you think Sprat and Professor ever almost ran into each other while the Professor was running through time? I wonder…

The Professor is so cute I know I drew him but still—and I like to imagine at this moment that they pass by Sprat is reading some math thing while The Professor is being shown a scroll with some history written down on it.

I feel like some of Sprats resentment for the Professor in the modern day comes at least a little from a sense of loneliness since without his cult he doesn’t seem to really have anyone but I do thinks it’s still a lot of jealousy and selfishness too but I tried to also reflect that in the art since I imagine people would’ve probably loved the little fuzzy time traveler :]

First one up: what I think (maybe) will happen when Ryan and the Professor finally land in purgatory

Listen the Professor already had moments in season 6 of freaking out because he wasn’t sure what he was doing with his show after a death and almost death and NOW he’s been drugged for an entire season, both him and Ryan are technically dead AND he now has to explain everything to no joke like 50+ other puppets

I don’t think he’s gonna be alright at first guys he’s been through a lot qOq

Realistically I know why Shane isn’t in Puppet History ever but at the same time I’m just like that’s his puppet son!! And his feral puppet step son qOq let them interact more!! Let him hold him!! Anyway I have a feeling sad and feral will be reoccurring emotions for those two

So like-I don’t ship Ryan and the Professor(to anyone that does I completely understand and it is actually super funny to me in a positive way) BUT I think I eat up any affection between them just as much so please season 8 give us more WE WENT FROM LIKE A SHORT HUG TO FULL HOLD AND HAND HOLD AND STUFF PLEASE

I may view them as friends/family but god I want them to keep being affectionate it’s so cute

I tried to depict the “deaths” of the other two in a not overly extreme way—Substitute just has glass shards and the Professor has his egg +spit(because eaten) and glowy eyes plus a glowy green and purple behind him because of Asmodeous and the Genie and I just kinda wanted to give him broken glasses so we’ll say that and the blue stuff on him is purgatory stuff or something XD

I am incapable of being normal about my puppet history quiz show and I was thinking about what it would be like if thanks to genie magic/god magic/ghost shane being funky ONLY the Professor was able to come back from purgatory and had to team up with the Substitute because of that and then I made a whole comic because of it qOq

Especially since this is the closest to interacting the two have gotten so far

This is just an extra drawing but I really hope they end up friends in season 8 it would be so funny to see them rag on Sprat together(also I changed the way I draw the Professor’s fluff so if it’s different in different drawings ignore that-)

the fact that the substitute can turn into other forms is fascinating to me I hope they use it in season 8

Why the Sprat vs Substitute vs Professor situation is so interesting

Aka I thought too hard about these three and decided to make an analytical post about it because I thought some people here might enjoy it!

Short version on why it’s interesting: Dr Sprat and the Professor have a lot of differences and the Substitute is a bridge between them.

Long version:

LOVED VS LONELY

Sprat is alone. He doesn’t talk to anyone unless he has to(the puppets he retires) or because he is using them in some way(Professor mainly, Ryan and technically Dorthy Ruth). His guests aren’t real and can’t talk to him. At best he loves math, but math isn’t people or puppets. Even the triangle puppet, a puppet you would think he’d show some affection for because that’s his thing, he still treats almost the same as everyone else(professional, distant but with a little bit of friendliness so it seems more natural, ect). He’s lived a long time and has no one.

This is in direct contrast with the Professor. The Professor, if he’s anything, is full of love. His entire show itself is built off of love for something. He loves history, and unlike math, history is people and puppets. He grows to love Ryan and he loves his parents. He’s friends with the other puppets and they love him enough to mourn his death. He loves teaching and he loves learning. He’s traveled all through time and has many people. He loves people and people love him. 

That love that people—more specifically puppets—have for the Professor leads us to our first example of the Subuttute’s bridge between these two.

The Substitute is created as a hologram copy of the Professor—One that literally says he loves them—to mourn his death. Despite the fact he is created from the love of the puppets and Professor, the substitute is remarkably alone. He has song guests but they’re all implied to be part of him/him just splitting them off of himself. He has guests that he can talk and joke with, but he doesn’t truly know them like the Professor does.(especially Ryan)

The Substitute is made from love, but completely alone.

This fact is further reflected in their relationship with songs in the series;

Sprat does not sing(and probably won’t since he doesn’t seem to care for that very much)

The substitute sings a song but is all by himself

Both times the Professor sings he sings a duet(with Santa and the meteor + his parents are there)

That fact also brings us into our next comparison point-

STRAIGHT FACT VS ARTISTIC EXPRESSION 

I saw a post or comment somewhere when the finale came out that said something along the lines of “the classic STEM vs humanities debate” which is basically what this section is hehehe

For this section I’m using the term artistic loosely, in this case mainly meaning anything that leans into something other than logic and facts as well as its more common meaning. 

Though we don’t know a lot about Sprat we can assume that since he’s so math based he likely doesn’t care very much for art or history or any expression based subjects like that. He looks at a series that combines art and history and decides to make it solely a fact based series with very little heart. 

He throws away stuff in the room that isn’t needed or required despite what it means to anyone else or the sentiments behind them and does it all at once(this point can also loop back around to adding to the loved vs lonely part since it also reflects that)

The Professor cares a lot for artistic expression. Though his show does give straight facts of history, they’re often accompanied by deeper more personal thoughts about what a person or situation is like, if a person is cool or not, ect. He obviously cares for traditional artistic expression since he lets the other puppets sing about whatever situation(which also often helps them deal with their issues EX. The gay oars). 

Over time his room grows and changes but it's gradual and decently sentimental and happens over seasons. The Professor cares about the expression of people throughout history and expression through art like the other Puppets and their songs. He likes when guests doodle him on their boards. Also he plays the guitar which is great.

The Substitute is literally made from math and science. Straight facts. He’s a hologram, technically a computer. Despite that though, he is still made to be like the Professor in the end. He sings a song(and likely enjoys them just like the Professor) and seems to enjoy history as well since he was willing to take over for a season. He cares about art and history and although he does change the room a bit since he has the box he keeps it mostly the same. Keeps the expression of life but adds something lifeless as well.

To further this, the titles these three have also reflect this to an extent. While Sprat is probably actually a mathematical doctor legally and the Professor is obviously a Professor these titles also refer to a level of differing expression. A doctor, of the kind Sprat is at least, often has one main focus and tends to focus on that solely with their job. While a professor does have a main focus(like history), professors also have a greater ability to branch off with what they do. They also teach, which is a further connection to the expression of people since you spread what people have done and then more people go and do things because of that. It’s a lot more connected than the mentioned type of doctor.

Now this next part isn’t technically even canon because I don’t think the Substitute is ever called anything besides hologram Professor in canon and the substitute title is fan made but I’m still gonna mention it. A substitute is just a person or thing that replaces something for some amount of time. The substitute could be either of those things the Professor or Sprat are, because he’s a substitute. He walks the line between a sole focus of his job(replacing the Professor) and expressing things while doing it(teaching history to people). 

IMMORTAL(IN THEIR OWN WAY)

As we all know, Sprat is immortal. Via the ✨magic of math✨ he managed to figure it out. Obviously he never died before, and it is likely that he is (to an extent) fearful of death since he wanted to avoid it so badly. He’s a full fledged immoral and has been around for a long time. Math will never die and all that.

The Professor is not immortal, he’s literally died before. Emphasis on, died before, since he came back. You can kill him but he doesn’t really stay dead. So he’s not immortal since he can die but he’s not really alive in a normal sense because of the fact he comes back?? Like he gets eaten by a dinosaur? Boom he breaks biology, hatches from an egg-that’s his mom now. You send him to purgatory? He’ll find some way back I’m sure.

The Substitute can be defeated and at least put out of commission(get rid of the box/unplug it + throw him out a window) like the Professor, but he is also immortal, to an extent since as long as the box exists he does too, like Sprat.

That mainly comes from the fact that technically he wasn’t ever alive to begin with(the wonders of being a hologram!). Like he was made in purgatory(death) and then came to normal world(life)—he has the Professor’s ability to “die” and come back from the “dead”, but Sprat’s fact of being basically immortal. The Substitute can’t die because he was never alive.

Additionally, Sprat’s cult believed in reincarnation, though he didn’t do it, instead choosing immortality. The Professor was believed to be immortal originally(by Sprat and us at some point), but technically reincarnated(since I don’t think it fully counts if you’re just you but bigger when you come back but you get what I’m getting at) and since the substitute is a recreation of someone dead but has never died himself he’s continues to be a bridge between the two of them.

And that is all :].

I hope this made some amount of sense. There's probably even more things that connect these three than this, feel free to add your own thoughts!

Anyway I can’t wait for Season 8 where the Professor and Substitute team up and scare Spratt’s “I figured out immortality” self with their “you can’t keep me dead” and “I was never alive so I can’t die” selves until they beat him(Professor Substitute duet WHEN??)

Guess who finished the Puppet history finale💔💔

I have many thoughts and emotions because WHAT THE HECK but that gave me the inspiration to make some art!!

While Sprat/Pythagoras’ monologue was incredible and I am very worried for Ryan + the Professor, at the same time him boasting about taking over the show and murder was very funny with the context of what Ryan and The Professor have been through

Next we have the TEAM TO PERHAPS BRING BACK RYAN AND THE PROFESSOR BECAUSE THEYRE THE ONLY ONES LEFT (you do not understand my joy and shock at the return of the plauge rat AND THE BOX) also drawing Shane twice right next to each other is a new one and hey maybe God will finally do something again!!

Finally got around to watching the new Puppet History episode

Though I have many THOUGHTS™️ there’s a bit with Shane in it where he says that he’s proud of the Professor(incredibly sweet) and has always viewed his as a son and while the Professor brings up if they even know each other that exchange reminded me of this meme I made a while back so here you all go

Excited for the next episode the Professor is adorable as always especially in his little party hat hope you all enjoyed the episode as well!
