the national championship final was drawing closer, and so were the final exams. for [y/n], captain of the college volleyball team, her schedule was a battlefield, split between intense drills on the court and endless hours buried in textbooks. every practice was a blur of sweat and shouted instructions, every study session a desperate race against the clock. her focus was absolute, or at least, it was supposed to be. but lately, her thoughts had a way of drifting, always landing on the same person. choi soobin.
he’d been around a lot more lately, ever since he and her older brother, beomgyu, became practically inseparable. soobin was just... everywhere. tonight, practice ran late. beomgyu, who usually walked her home, had a last-minute commitment, leaving her alone in the echoing gym well past 8pm. she was on the court, preparing for one last powerful serve, when the gym door creaked open and a familiar voice called out, “[y/n]? beomgyu asked me to walk you home.”
it was soobin. a jolt of surprise went through her. startled, she tossed the ball up for her serve. her focus completely thrown off, she mishit it badly. the ball veered wildly off course, and with a sharp thwack, connected squarely with soobin’s nose. he stumbled back, a hand flying to his face, a look of stunned surprise – and definite pain – replacing his usual easy smile.
“shit! i’m so sorry!” she rushed to him. “are you okay?” her voice was barely a whisper, drowned out by the roaring in her ears. she was mortified. of all the people in the world, she had just slammed a volleyball directly into the face of the guy she'd been crushing on for months. [y/n] wished the ground would just swallow her whole.
soobin slowly lowered his hand, and a thin trickle of blood instantly appeared, winding its way from his nostril down to his upper lip. he winced, then managed a crooked smile, his eyes sparkling despite the obvious pain. “wow,” he mumbled, his voice a little nasally. “that's quite the warm welcome, [y/n]. really makes a guy feel wanted.”
she practically dove for the nearest bench, grabbing a clean towel. “here, hold this. press it firmly.” her hands trembled slightly as she guided his hand to his nose, pressing the towel against it. “does it hurt badly? we should get some ice. or maybe go to the nurse's office?” she rambled, her mind racing, still genuinely worried.
he let out a low chuckle, wincing slightly as his nose protested. “it's fine,” he managed, the towel pressed firmly. “not exactly what i had in mind,” he mumbled, a lopsided grin forming despite the blood. “when i said i liked getting hit by a woman, this wasn't quite it.”
[y/n] stared at him, her jaw dropping slightly before snapping shut. “shut up!” she hissed, her face burning even hotter. “one more joke and i swear i'll get another ball and hit you again, this time on purpose” despite her furious words, a tiny, involuntary smile threatened to break through her concern.
he just laughed, a genuine, slightly painful sound that made his shoulders shake. “i guess beomgyu was right,” he gasped, still holding the towel to his nose. “you’re a little evil.”
[y/n] rolled her eyes, but the sting of mortification hadn’t quite faded. “oh, shut up,” she mumbled, though a small smile tugged at her lips despite herself. “let me see that.” gently, she reached out to pull his hand away from his nose, needing to assess the damage properly. the blood had lessened, but a prominent red mark already bloomed across the bridge of his nose, promising a bruise. their eyes met, and for a moment, the world outside the echoing gym faded, leaving only the two of them.
she blinked, the sharp ping of a distant scoreboard buzzer pulling her back to reality. the magic of the moment popped like a bubble. she leaned closer, examining his nose. “yeah, that's definitely going to leave a bruise,” she stated, a nervous laugh escaping her. “you can tell people you’re a bad boy who got into a fight.”
soobin just shook his head, a playful grin tugging at his lips. “oh, is that my new image now? from cool gamer to gym fight club brawler, thanks to the volleyball captain?” he gave her a mock-serious look, but his eyes were bright with amusement. he finally pulled the towel away, revealing the undeniable purple tint already spreading under his skin. “you know,” he said, touching his nose lightly, “for someone who just tried to mess up my face, you're pretty cute when you're worried.”
“i hate you”  she said, punching his arm playfully, then immediately regretting it, worried she'd hurt him further. “come on, let's just get you home and get some ice on that.”
“your place?” he asked, a hint of a smile still playing on his lips. “where else?” she retorted, not looking back as she pushed open the heavy gym doors. “beomgyu's not home, and you definitely need ice. unless you want to walk around with a purple nose for the next week.”
the cool night air hit them as they stepped outside, a stark contrast to the stuffy gym. the walk to her house was quieter than she expected. soobin didn’t complain about his nose, occasionally touching it with the towel, his gaze often drifting to her. she kept her eyes fixed forward, acutely aware of him beside her.
when they reached her front door, she fumbled with her keys, her heart doing that weird flutter again. “come in,” she mumbled, pushing the door open. the house was quiet, exactly as she’d left it. “kitchen's this way. let's get you that ice pack.” she led him through the dim hallway, already picturing the frozen peas in the freezer.
in the kitchen, she quickly rummaged through the freezer. “aha!” she announced, pulling out a bag of frozen peas. “perfect.” she wrapped it in a thin dish towel and handed it to him. “here. hold this against it. it'll help with the swelling.” soobin took the makeshift ice pack, pressing it carefully to his nose, a soft sigh escaping him. the fluorescent kitchen light seemed to highlight the beginning of a truly impressive bruise.
“seriously, i am so, so sorry about this," she said, wringing her hands slightly. “and thank you. for coming to get me, i mean. beomgyu had to go to daegu last minute.” she looked at him, a genuine wave of remorse washing over her. “are you really okay? like, really, truly okay?”
he adjusted the ice pack, a faint smile playing on his lips. “yeah, i'm okay,”  he assured her, his voice a little clearer now. “just a bit of a surprise. and don't worry about beomgyu, it's fine. but speaking of volleyball,” he paused, his gaze thoughtful, “why did you choose it, anyway? i mean, out of all the sports?”
she traced a pattern on the floor with her toe, thinking for a moment. “it just... felt natural, i guess. from the first second i stepped onto a court, it just clicked. it’s weird, but when i’m playing, it’s like i’m completely myself. no masks, no pretending. just me.” she finally met his gaze, a small, genuine smile forming on her lips.
soobin’s eyes didn’t leave hers. the playful glint faded, replaced by something softer, more intense. his gaze dropped to her lips for a fleeting second before returning to her eyes. the quiet of the kitchen stretched between them, thick with unspoken words. he slowly took the bag of frozen peas from his nose, letting it fall with a soft thud onto the counter beside him. he slowly reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray strand of hair from her cheek, his touch sending a shiver down her spine.
her eyes fluttered shut as his lips finally met hers. it was soft, hesitant at first. then, as she responded, a warmth spread through her, chasing away the last lingering fear. his hand moved from her cheek to cup the back of her head, deepening the kiss, and she instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
when they finally broke apart, breathless, the silence of the kitchen seemed to amplify the pounding of her heart. his thumb still rested on her cheek, tracing a slow circle, and his eyes, dark and heavy, were fixed on hers.
she found herself staring at his slightly swollen, purpling nose, a stark reminder of how they got here.
soobin’s gaze followed hers, and a playful smirk touched his lips. “definitely want a repeat,”  he murmured, his eyes twinkling, “but maybe when my nose looks a little less like a disaster.”
[y/n] scoffed, a laugh bubbling up past the lingering awe of the kiss, and delivered a gentle kick to his leg. “i really hate you” she said, shaking her head, unable to hide the wide smile that now spread across her face. “beomgyu’s not going to be happy about us.”
he just grinned, a confident glint in his eyes that made her heart skip. “i can handle your brother,” he assured her, his voice low and firm. “and you? you're not getting rid of me that easily." he winked.
without another word, he pulled her closer, his arms wrapping gently around her waist. she gasped softly as she was drawn against him, the sudden contact sending a new jolt through her. in his embrace, with the faint scent of him and the steady beat of his heart against her ear, she felt a profound sense of peace. a thought bloomed in her mind, quiet but certain: she could stay right here, forever.
