I think it's interesting that Romeo is VERY toxic to Connor but he still respects his gender identity (also he would kinda be a hypocrite for being homophobic).

Yes, it is! I find the bigotry to be unnecessary to the story, plus we have enough of it IRL. Everything in the AU would still be treated with care, though does that make sense? So the characters still had to come out as trans and have that conversation but it’s never in fear— so Connor would’ve been unsure about coming out to his mom and Mr. Gunn but not because he was worried about lack of acceptance, just because of general unsureness. They accepted him immediately.. but in character. So Mr. Gunn was just like “I see… Do you have a new name, do you want us to assign one— we’ll have to update the files…”

Or in Romeo’s case (mostly a joke here:
