our birding experiences are wildly different from each other.

what we call rare, uncommon, and common, though tied to a degree of black-and-white science, is still very much dependent on the wild gradients that are our local environments and our access to it.

with this in mind, it makes little sense to me to apply this “truth” of rarity to a greater community, especially when not involving this community in the truth-setting process, and especially if you enforce it in inconsistent manners. furthermore, without seeking a community-set understanding, the upholding of this truth is grossly self-centered to the perspectives of a select few who, oftentimes, stem from areas with total access to nature and therefore, access to a relatively greater diversity of birds.

as a result, the joyful experiences that arise from witnessing relatively “common” birds in areas with low access to nature and low species diversity, are made to seem unimportant and meaningless. consequently, the general birding experience is then associated as a negative one, requiring of an access to nature and equipment that is unattainable to some, deliberately squashing community excitement.

i am hopeful that my words here resonate in the hearts of others who see birds as a way of connecting to inner peace and nature, regardless of the bird’s rarity. and while stern disagreement exists upon these statements, next time you witness a “common” bird, ask yourself, “common to who?”.

Ok, funny but also kinda bitter sweet story I found today while looking up Blue ducks (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos):

So as a summary, Blue ducks, also known as Whio are an endemic species to New Zealand, and as you know; most bird species there have suffered greatly from human activity and the introduction of alien animals (especially mammals) to the islands, therefore the species is sadly endangered: thankfully there is a few projects and breeding programs (the Central North Island Blue Duck Charitable Conservation Trust; WHIONE programme; Whio Forever Project..etc ) in New Zealand to boost their numbers and protect their habitat.

But as for many endangered species, it is always a good idea to have captive breeding programs elsewhere as a safe keep,.. but for this species their only out of New Zealand breeding program maintained in the UK ended at 2012, and THE FUNNIEST PART, is the last three individuals in that program; two males and one female, the two male ignored the female and became a gay couple : https://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/extinction-countdown/gay-ducks-derail-repopulation-plan/

A stunning announcement from HHS Secretary RFK Jr. has set the media ablaze.

“After reviewing the science and consulting top experts at NIH and FDA, HHS has determined that mRNA technology poses more risk than benefits than these respiratory viruses.”

The official HHS press release states:

“BARDA is terminating 22 mRNA vaccine development investments because the data show these vaccines fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu. We’re shifting that funding toward safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate.”

The announcement wipes out nearly $500 million worth of Covid mRNA vaccine development projects under the the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), “we’re moving beyond the limitations of mRNA and investing in better solutions” stated Kennedy in the HHS press release.

What was up until yesterday, mistakenly looked at as the future vaccine technology for respiratory illness now dies on the vine as its funding has been largely cut.

Pathologist Ryan Cole, M.D. speaking on the cancellations said, “It was a failed technology from the beginning and really wouldn’t exist, Moderna wouldn’t exist if the government hadn’t buoyed them up with up-front money, billions of dollars, to get this out into the public. This is really a hold-over of the Fauci mindset that many of us are grateful to see be de-invested and defunded like this.
