3 Easy Tips for Creating Strong Characters

We’re halfway through Camp NaNoWriMo! Today, NaNoWriMo  participant Abigail Falanga shares some powerful insight into character building and how those characters inform the structure of your story:

Characters are story.

They reveal unexpected themes, tug in new directions, propel plot-arcs, and create dialogue through opposing positions. They texture scene and setting, making your written world seem real. They draw you in and make you care. The key to creating strong characters is observation.

1. Observe Real People

People-watching is helpful (and fun!)

I mean taking note of how people act, think, talk, react, even look and smell. Then, recombine details and see what happens. Every detail makes a whole, distinct personality.

People make the mistake to get back with someone because they want the relationship to be how it used to be. But you only get one beginning.

Inspiration

Inspiration, what a funny word. Do you want to be an inspiration? Tell something inspiring? Write something inspiring? Read something inspiring? Me I’ve come here to read inspiring authors thoughts. For one to be a good writer they must read good writing, yes? 

I want my words like many other to inspire, after you read them I want them to sink deep into the soul, I want you to feel what I feel and see what I see. Since I was a young girl I would see a picture of a place or person and my head would immediately come up with a story and illaborate story that I would write in my computer and get it all out of my head. Then when I was finished and had over 100 pages of pure magic that I created from nothing. Then I would delete it.

Why? I had no inspiration, my family, if they read my words would laugh. They wouldn’t understand, nobody understood the way my mind worked. So I was ashamed, ashamed I was different, ashamed that I had so many stories and words in my small mind. If I had inspiration, I could have been a writer or editor. I could be something that now as an adult I long for.

Is it to late? Who would be my inspiration? 

I personally don’t think it’s ever to late to to start something and I would be my own inspiration. Am I still afraid people will read my words and laugh? Yes it absolutely terrifies me nobody who I know has ever read any of my stories. But that’s going to change. I will let someone I know read something that I have written and tell me what the think I want to be the inspiration for any young  writers out there. 

Believe in yourself and believe in your words. Be your own inspiration.
