“Just warning you that you should run while you can because i’m about to ask you the most touristy question there is.” Peyton told the person, giving them a goofy grin. “Where is the best place to get a decent cup of coffee around here?”
Tumblr media
Bones chuckled and ran a hand through his hair, looking down the road in the direction of Extract. “There’s a pretty good coffee shop a couple streets over,” he said. “But I wouldn’t worry too much about sounding like a tourist-- the most touristy thing you could do is ask where the lighthouse is.”

“You know, I’m going to give you a little warning. If you sit next to me, chances are you’ll be gone in a week. I’m a magnet for making people disappear. So go, save yourself before it’s too late.”
Tumblr media
“I think I’ll take my chances,” Bones said slowly, giving the other man a hesitant once-over. “What’s going on?”

“So I need to stop checking out shelters around here or I’m going to become a crazy cat lady.  How do people not just adopt every animal they see?  I’m gonna go broke on animal food alone if I go with what I want.”
Tumblr media
“You should just let the cat-lady persona take you over. I’m halfway towards being a reclusive dog lady, so I can’t judge.”

The Setup || River & Bones
@river-adams
On any other day, Bones would’ve said no to even the idea of a blind date. He had gone on a couple before and decided long ago that they just weren’t his scene. Maybe there was something in the air on that afternoon he had agreed to Mrs. Keane’s offer to set him up, or perhaps it was simply in the way she had been so engaging and confident in the idea (”You’re gonna love her, Bernard. Really. She’s exactly what you’ve been looking for, trust me.” --Not that he had been looking for anything in the first place), but Bones accepted the date and showed up to Port & Starboard the next week, twenty minutes early. It was too early to be sitting alone at their reserved table, but he would rather face a few moments of extra wait time than to show up late and start off on the wrong foot.
When he finally spotted the hostess leading a woman his way, Bones stood up from the table and pressed down the front of his suit jacket. He felt more nervous than apprehensive, but couldn’t help but notice how young the woman looked, and for a brief moment toyed with the idea that Mrs. Keane didn’t actually know that he was in his thirties. Still, he extended a hand in greeting once she got close. “Hey, you must be River,” he said, offering up a pleasant smile. “I’m Bernard. Or Bones-- I’m not sure which name you were given.”

pistolpiper:
Right before it started to get dark outside at the Founder’s Day Picnic, Piper made a momentary escape from the party grounds to her apartment. She wasn’t leaving, and hopefully no one who saw her dart off thought that. But Bandit, her sweet little angel of a furry best friend was at home, and had been all day. Who’s to say he couldn’t enjoy the picnic too? Everyone loved scruffy Australian shepherds with fur the color of milk chocolate, and he just loved people in general, so she knew it would work. He wasn’t a puppy, so he was pretty well-mannered, making her feel safe enough to walk him back into the picnic celebration.
“You can pet him if you’d like!” Piper gleamed upon seeing someone walk up to her.
Tumblr media
Bones had decided to bring along his own dogs, Holly and Brando, to the picnic for a while, knowing they could use some more time away from the property around the house. Brando, a six-year-old German shepherd, was overly enthusiastic about everything and naturally wanted to run up to the woman and her dog, while Holly, a younger basset hound, was a bit more reluctant.
“I would, but my hands are a little full at the moment,” Bones said with a chuckle, lifting up the leashes in his grip. “Is he cool with other dogs? I don’t wanna make him uncomfortable.”

“A lump?” She asked, a little confused by his wording. “I am an author. I write a series. Mostly teenagers read them, but some kids and adults also read.” Renée tried to explain.
Tumblr media
“Yeah, it’s an expression for someone who’s...” he trailed off, trying to find the right word. “Oblivious, I guess. --An author? That’s pretty neat. My nephew’s just barely started to learn to read, so I’m not exactly knowledgeable in the young adult book category.”

“Here you go, darling.” She smiled as she handed her book over to the small child, who then ran away gleefully. “Kids are just the cutest.” Renée commented quietly. “Especially when they come up to me asking for autographs.
Tumblr media
“Autographs, huh?” Bones repeated, turning to watch his nephew run around with a group of kids who had just discovered the bubble machine. “Sorry for soundin’ like a lump, here, but what do you do, exactly?”

“Your baby has good taste, then. And this is the time of year to eat all that stuff-- couldn’t tell you why, but it’s just better at these picnics. I always wake up the day after with five extra pounds.”

“This week has been so stressful.. there’s nothing more I need than a few shots of Grey Goose..” Piper laughed in a breath, “..but since I’m broke, I’ll settle for well vodka and some cranberry juice. Cheers!”

“Well, y’know what, there’s nothin’ wrong with a classic,” Bones said with a laugh, lifting his own glass to meet hers. “You’d probably run into more judgment if you were in some upscale join in New York or somethin’, but most people here are drinkin’ the cheapest beer on tap, anyway.”

“You think these shoes are supposed to get wet?” He glanced over at the figure now beside him ob the sidewalk, then turning his gaze to his Clarks shoes, dampened by the mounds of snow he’d trudged through.

“Couldn’t tell ya’, actually,” he said, raising an eyebrow. “I just avoid any shoes that can’t stand up to snow this time of year. It’s playing with fire otherwise, ironically.”

Charlotte played with hair as she waited in the queue, the lack of a Starbucks before work of a morning could potentially be devastating and so she was willing to brave the morning rush. She pulled out her phone and began to scroll through Instagram, unaware that the queue in front of her had already gone and it was her turn.
Tumblr media
Bones, leaning against the counter as he waited for his own coffee, noticed the woman staring at her phone instead of giving her order to the tired barista behind the register, and cleared his throat to get her attention. “I, uh, I think you’re up,” he prompted. “Unless there’s some invisible guy ahead of you. In which case, I apologize.”

It was always a good night whenever Bones was around. A smile began to appear as she playfully tossed back her hair in a flattered manner. “I know, I know. You can’t get enough of me.” A laugh spilled from her lips and she shook her head. “You’ll tell yourself it’s because you need some carbs, but we all know the truth.” And with that, she pushes the teasing to the side and smiles in response. “So, you want the usual?”
Tumblr media
"I wish I could use the ‘but I’m a growing boy’ excuse, but it’d be a little weird if I used that in my thirties,” he joked, reaching up to scratch the back of his head lightly. “I just love bread. And your lovely face, of course. --The usual sounds great. But can I get a Coke instead of water? I mean, I’m already here, so I might as well go the full mile, right?”

Before walking over to one of her tables to take a newcustomer’s order, she realized it wasn’t a new customer. In fact, she has takenthis person’s order for the fourth time that very week. She couldn’t help butto playfully approach them with a smirk arising. “I’m starting to wonder if youjust really love diner food or you’restalking me. Maybe both?”
Bones glanced up from his phone, letting the device rest on the table, and grinned at the woman beside him. “Oh, yeah, totally,” he drawled. “You’re the only reason I come here, Ros. That and the fact that I’m always starving and in need of some carbs.”

He smiled at the brunette as she adjusted in her seat, running a hand through his hair and turning slightly towards her. The way she spoke was so effervescent, and Bones wondered what it was like to have that much natural energy when it came to talking to people (especially strangers). He was only thirty, but in some days and situations it felt a lot more like fifty-eight. “If the food isn’t amazing, I’m runnin’ to get a burger and not looking back,” he joked, eyebrows raising.
Briefly, he turned his head towards the dance floor as he caught a glimpse of the bride walking past, looking so beautiful and so absolutely happy in her white gown. It was easy to forget that he was participating in and witnessing one of the most important days in somebody’s life, but seeing the newlyweds parade around the room as they thanked people and kissed when guests tapped their glasses with the cutlery reminded him just how special the day was to them.
“I actually met him last month, helped fix the fence around his yard after it got busted up in a storm,” he explained, looking back at the woman beside him. “At the end of the day, he was like ‘thank you so much, man, I’m so inviting you to my wedding.’ I guess I didn’t think he was serious.” He huffed a laugh as he remembered how confused he had been when an invitation to a stranger’s wedding showed up in the mail. “Things could be worse. They could’ve accidentally seated you at the kids’ table, after all.”

“See, I replied to the RSVP with a will not attend.” She laughed, leaning back into the seat, letting her terrible posture take over. “Then he called me, and gave me the longest guilt trip on fucking planet earth.” She sighed, looking over to the man to her right, “And look at me now, here I am, waiting on the food that was good enough to drag my sorry ass out of bed.” That was a hard feat. She was the best sleeper she knew. She could almost sleep on command, and this whole thing was preventing that.
Lily looked out over the crowd, people dancing, genuinely having a good time. Their happiness was infectious. She could feel it trying to take hold in her bones. But yet, she wasn’t having any of it. She was firmly stuck in the mindset that she had to stay focused. The X Games were coming up and she had to keep her mind on that. Over and over in her head she was replaying her tricks, feeling her body moving despite the fact she was firmly planted her chair.
“You know Mark?” She looked over at the man again, before looking out to her friend, “I think I’ve only actually met him three times. I don’t know how I warranted an invite to this. –Well.” She paused, “Maybe not if you’ve only spoken to him once before. Sorry.” She should have been a better listener than she really was.”I am sure I shouldn’t have even been invited.”

It hadn’t been an easy decision, showing up to the wedding.
Bones had stared at the delicate, pastel-colored wedding invitation stuck to his fridge for two weeks before deciding to attend, and it was mostly because his sister had urged him to, saying things like “you should get out of the house for once,” and “just get dressed up and have fun!” So, he pulled his old tuxedo --the one he hadn’t worn in a year, at least-- from the back of his closet and drove to the venue after making sure his dogs had enough water to last through the night. Not that he assumed he’d be gone very long.
There were several people attending the wedding that recognized Bones and wanted to talk to him, which wasn’t surprising in a town of less than eight-thousand people, but he still obliged. He didn’t find small talk to be all that unpleasant, and they were nice folks, but he didn’t really know any of them well enough to exchange more than a polite greeting and brief life update (”Yeah, my parents are doing well. Still working that nine-to-five?”). Needless to say, he was grateful when the ceremony and cocktail hour ended-- that way he could find his table and just watch people shuffle around the dance floor while he ate an extra piece(or two) of wedding cake.
He had forgotten about the singles table, though. A dreaded wasteland with the power to make you feel lonelier than you were and look even worse. Especially at his age; nobody wanted to be the lone thirty-something at the singles table, but there he was. Alone and thirty. Waiting for cake.
When he heard someone speaking to him, it took a second for it to even register. There were so many voices all muddling together that he assumed at first she was addressing someone else, but when he looked up and made eye contact, he connected the dots and smiled. “A little, yeah. I’ve been hearing good things about the salmon,” he jested, slipping his phone into the breast pocket of his jacket. “Don’t tell the groom, though. As far as he knows, I wouldn’t miss this for the world. --Even though I’ve only actually spoken to him once before tonight.”

@bones-wilde
The simple fact was, she didn’t want to be here. She didn’t want to drive up into a mountain, just to watch someone she barely knew get married. Sure, the joy and the matrimony was lovely. Two people who love each other making it official in the eyes of the government, that was all swell. She was happy for them, but that didn’t make her want to be there anymore. The four hours it took her to get ready, plus just the idea of wearing a dress in the cold were points against going. That combined with mingling with people while she was sore and on a break was even more unappealing.
And yet, she was there. Sitting in that dress, mingling.
The brunette watched on absentmindedly as the couple got married, only coming to full consciousness when the pastor asked if anyone had any reason why they shouldn’t. She thought of four quick reasons, and thought about objecting, if for nothing else but the comedic value. But her conscious got the better of her and she remained silent. Soon enough she they were running out and she was tossing rice on them like a good wedding goer should, the brunette let out a sigh of relief.
Half of her didn’t want to go to the reception at all, but she knew her face was expected. The other half wasn’t opposed to the idea of free food. It didn’t matter how much money she made, or how recognizable she’d become she didn’t care, free food was just that. Free. So Lily hitched a ride to the reception. She slowly walked through the room, everything about it shouting marital bliss. People happy, singing, drinking, dancing– by anyone’s account it was a good party. It just wasn’t something she ever saw herself doing. But that however, didn’t stop her from plucking a flute of champagne off the first tray she saw passing. This gave her ample opportunity to clink glasses with everyone who walked back, say her niceties, hear them thrown back at her. Eventually she looked for her table – of course, the singles table.
She almost immediately regretted not bringing someone. She knew loads of people, all of them would have been willing to go, if for nothing else but to pick someone up and get laid at a wedding. That’s all they were good for these days. She could have sold it to someone, but yet, here she was alone. Sitting at her table was another poor lonely soul and suddenly, she didn’t feel as bad about herself. Sitting down where her named place, which so happened to be next to him, she looked over, “Please tell me you’re only here for the free food too.”

“They don’t bite you know, I mean unless you piss them off. But even then it’s like, whatever,” Gage spoke softly with a light chuckle, holding out one of his hands to the other person. The small snake was winding it’s way through his fingers. “Here, hold him.”

“I lived for snakes and lizards when I was a kid,” he said as he extended a gentle hand to the serpent. “I would go out into the field to find the little ones that lived in the weeds. --More of a dog person nowadays, but this little guy still looks pretty neat.”
