This Day Had It All
"We die only once, and for such a long time."
--Moliere
It's strange, likely morbid, but I am fascinated with this odd, surreal experience, the death of my mother.
Life is brutal, but fair and orderly. Life dictates, hopes, that we outlive our parents and, therefore, must deal with their deaths. It has happened as appointed by nature. Her death was beautiful in its economy, accomplished quickly and painlessly. I do believe the best of us will die in such a manner: no suffering, with dignity; beautifully done.

Mark Twain said, “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” I had similar experiences. With each passing decade I only regret I didn’t follow all of his advice and heed his simple observations about maneuvering in this mean old world.
His Depression-era childhood included an absent father, his mother’s death at age 29, and his and two younger brothers’ subsequent designation as wards of the state. He saw desperate relatives doing predictably desperate things to survive another day. He mentioned to me more than once that his upbringing could easily have spawned a “real asshole” had he succumbed to pity and resentment. Somehow, he maintained a loving heart and a sense of humor.
He pounced on any pause in a conversation to share the latest, most heinous, politically-incorrect jokes he’d picked up from his work colleagues. Some of the one-liners he told me remain my favorites. They are awful gems.
Watching him with Mom, my sister, and his grandchildren was breathtaking. He loved hard and big.
We became best friends as I grew older. I miss him every day. Alzheimer’s disease has really thrown a wrench into things.
I love you, Dad.
