me realizing not even storer knows/understands what's happening with Carmen Berzatto.
#sydcarmy#sydney x carmy#honestly he kind of doesn't get mental illness or how it works#ion care if he wrote the character. he's lost in the woods.#he also merely uses sydney as a plot device. I don't care anymore. I said it.

fun fact. Dulé Hill is from my hometown Sayreville and he went to highschool with my sister.
Burton "Gus" Guster. Character of all time. His middle name should be "Yes And". He is ride or die but he will kvetch about it. He is literally screaming crying throwing up. He's divorced. He has strong opinions about Pluto. He almost joined a cult. He claims his bestie on his taxes. He can tap dance and sing like a pro. He blogs about marine animals. He has so many niche interests. His bestie had to blackmail his boss to allow him to continue running around solving crime. He accurately deciphered the text message "binshot not lol". He went undercover as a model. He's not over losing the spelling bee as a child. He owns a shirt advertising cold sore medicine. He drove a stolen car to San Francisco to be with his bestie and only turned around 12 times. He's a sympathetic crier.

storer writes her this way because he think she's cute and being the sarcastic mean girl is funny. She's the strong white woman who goes after what she wants even if it's forced and mean and inappropriate.
4x07 set up many parallels between Sydney and Claire but the most glaring one to me was how when Sydney was joking around with Stevie and kind of poking fun at Carmy, Carmy laughed. But when Claire was making fun of him under the table he didn't. He never laughs at her jokes or sarcasm because when you really hear what she's saying, unlike Sydney, it's very mean. She's joking about his trauma or the things he opened up to her about. She's terrible.

"This is the shit we do."
To the people who wanted a different ending to TOWL, I'm glad you didn't get it, I'm glad you didn't get what you wanted.
If you know Rick at all, then you will know that this was perfect for him, he wanted nothing else. Had many of these people got their way, Michonne and RJ would have been excluded, or even killed off at some point, and it would have been some bromance love fest between Rick and Daryl.
Neither the spin off or the finale was created for fans like these anyway. It wasn't written for them so to get so annoyed and angry over something that was never for them in the first place is rather odd to me.
Many of these fans don't deserve such amazing characters, they don't deserve such a beautiful love story or such talented and brilliant actors. They don't deserve the Grimes because they obviously don't understand or care about them. Which is why I'm so glad that there is no sign of Andy or Danai returning anytime soon. They gave us this perfect ending for the Grimes family and moved on.
The general TWD fanbase doesn't know how lucky they are with these characters or how much they and the franchise lost when they left, but then they never appreciated or deserved the Grimes anyway

Syd: [To Carmy] I think I could marry you but you might need an exorcism first because something's off and I can't tell if it's a demon or autism. I was willing to look over it because you're fine but it might actually be a problem.

@morningssofgold you ate this up
I will quoe all my favorite parts : Again, this is absolutely fucking ridiculous but the article did make a pretty valid point in that critics and Emmy voters have formed the opinion that S1 was so good that the show itself must’ve caught lightening in a bottle and it has never quite recaptured why it became a sleeper hit that turned into an absolute phenomenon. Even these people have noted that the narrative stalled in S2 has done nothing truly meaningful since<<<<truth
"S1 had absurd humor, sarcastic and dry humor but it also balanced deeper issues of trauma, mental health as well as the tension between the family you’re born into versus a found family and the work it takes to heal from one and nurture the other." <<<<<<asolutely yes. S1 made me love the show and the way he was done was perfect.
By the time we get to S4, it feels like a helium balloon that has finally run out of air. The show has become horribly dull, dour, overly esoteric, references itself far too much instead of actually advancing the storyline and is deeply and dreadfully unsexy.<<<< unfortunatly yes. I said the show is 4 different shows. I said in S3 it went too cinema. I have said after season 4, what direction is this story going if not telling the same narrative without actually advancing it? where are we going?
Even as we get trolled and talked down to, the potential for a romance between Sydney and Carmy would not cheapen the value of a show that ties itself into knots trying to be as high-brow as possible. <<<<< forefinger and thumb tapping. "Ties itself into knots trying to be as high--brow as possible." <<<<<this really annoys me because s1 was not like this.
To have frozen this dynamic to waste time on needlessly victimizing Carmy through a toxic relationship instead of allowing him room to figure himself out and who he is and what he wants has stalled the show because Sydney is the Bear as is Carmy as was Mikey. That should’ve been the exploration two seasons ago as opposed to trying to pacify an abuser to appease a toxic social circle who would rather Carmy suffer silently as opposed to actually asking him what he needs and how they can support him instead opting to tell him what he needs according to their insular, homogenous community (how CS has managed to turn Chicago into fucking Tuscaloosa, Alabama should be studied for what not to do) that he actively feels lonely, isolated, and disconnected from. and tis
And all the rest. This perfectly sums up how I feel. I would be more articulate in this reblog, but I don't have to be because this said it all lol. Man. Anyway, falling in love is beautiful.
Little Food For Thought
So I know we’re all reflecting on the state of the show especially after whatever the fuck that word salad was the other day and I just want to offer some (unsolicited and probably unwanted lol) thoughts.
I was actually thinking about that article in Vulture (??) about the whisper campaign among Emmy voters to block The Bear from winning awards in the comedy genre. The rationale was dumb as fuck and largely based on the idea that it’s anticlimactic for the same actors and showrunner to win every year and instead reward Hacks for being an actual comedy (I’ve never seen this show so idk if it’s actually a comedy or not).
Again, this is absolutely fucking ridiculous but the article did make a pretty valid point in that critics and Emmy voters have formed the opinion that S1 was so good that the show itself must’ve caught lightening in a bottle and it has never quite recaptured why it became a sleeper hit that turned into an absolute phenomenon. Even these people have noted that the narrative stalled in S2 has done nothing truly meaningful since.
S1 had absurd humor, sarcastic and dry humor but it also balanced deeper issues of trauma, mental health as well as the tension between the family you’re born into versus a found family and the work it takes to heal from one and nurture the other.
By the time we get to S4, it feels like a helium balloon that has finally run out of air. The show has become horribly dull, dour, overly esoteric, references itself far too much instead of actually advancing the storyline and is deeply and dreadfully unsexy.
CS has somehow managed to give us the absolute unsexiest pairing on streaming which I mean, is a choice considering our lead actor (I’ve never seen a single episode of Shameless but I’ve seen enough gifs to know we’re losing recipes ppl). The fucking Amish are spicier than C***** and Carmy and not that I want to see MA rated sex scenes between these two because first, ew and secondly, based on C***** increasingly predatory behavior towards Carmy and her dubious relationship to consent if we did get those scenes, Mariska Hargitay would probably be a guest star that episode but I digress.
Even as we get trolled and talked down to, the potential for a romance between Sydney and Carmy would not cheapen the value of a show that ties itself into knots trying to be as high-brow as possible.
Romance doesn’t have to be cheap and I resent the implication that it is on its face (Romance is the most popular genre of book in the world, and we as a society are hopelessly invested in seeing people fall and be in love!!!).
There’s something incredibly powerful and meaningful about the redemptive power in finding love in a way that is gentle, selfless, respectful, and empowering as well as deeply passionate against a backdrop of familial trauma, toxic masculinity, abuse in a multitude of forms, and mental health struggles. As well as the obvious subversive nature of a pairing like this and the nuances and social dynamics at play here.
It’s also nonsensical that wanting this would somehow reduce Sydney’s character and compromise her autonomy and identity when part of truly loving someone is not being consumed by them but growing with them and becoming your best self alongside them. I think this is actively being shown in the narrative between Sydney and Carmy. Carmy is slowly becoming a better version of himself through Sydney’s influence and impact. She’s actively making her mark on him and Carmy is on her even in his imperfect way, even though he’s just as likely to fuck up as he is to get it right.
It’s not impossible to showcase a love story within an exceptionally complex dynamic and it enhances the story without cheapening the story (what we’ve been subjected to for far too long has cheapened the story, it’s a mediocre side plot unbecoming to a show that was once on the trajectory of becoming one of the iconic tv shows of our time), that is not impossible even though it’s not an easy feat because lazy/cop out writing simply won’t cut it here. Nothing but nuance and real work will make a canon Sydcarmy pairing live up to its full potential.
Does the show have the potential to do this? Absolutely, the threads are there to tie them together in a way that deliciously suggests elements of magical realism and tie together all of the suggestions that these two incredibly flawed people can come together and love each other earnestly and without fear but the show has to get out of its own way just like Carmy in the narrative.
All this to say, it’s okay to be passionate and invested in the love story the show itself has left the potential open to make manifest at literally any given time.
It’s not wrong or shameful to want to see two people fall in love beyond the darkness that surrounds them both individually and collectively. It’s not so wrong to want to see more love and something redemptive and hopeful, especially these days where hope and love is so horribly hard to come by.
I wouldn’t let anyone’s spiteful (and honestly fucking weird) comments ruin the experience of creating and thinking and engaging with others who feel just as strongly about this pairing and show as you do.
If you’ve made it to the end of this long winded ass post, ily💕

i hear you, but at some point you have to point it out. They will never stop otherwise once you allow it. We have to be realistic. they don't care about any of that. They will continue to downgrade sydney through the questions they ask. I'm not disagreeing with you but you have to eventually say something that's all i'm saying.
Notice how interviewers don’t really ask Ayo about Syd’s journey and they never try to unpack what is going on with her character?
They will ask about process and Ayo directing or writing episodes, then just revert to asking questions about shipping concerns, and her character is an afterthought?
It’s because people are very preoccupied with stuff that doesn’t put Syd on the same level of importance as Carmy, despite the show literally telling us Carmy believes in Syd more than himself.
Ayo is going to keep giving the same trash answers until someone asks the right questions and it’s not because the showrunners are garbage and don’t care.

sure I get that, however, she could point that out also. Its fine being clever and to joke around and be witty because you're over the questions, and don't take them seriously, but point out being over it or they'll keep asking you this. I get she enjoys being the fool which is fine but it comes a time when you can give better more nuanced answers. Idk. maybe she feels that would backfire being a black woman we can't do too much or it'll make her unlikable. she's still young so. I'm not young and wouldn't care as much as she does so I get it.
