hs1 was like a fun, corny college tv sitcom that tapped way too much on the cringe side of storytelling and it showed the characters having fun at school while also complaining about how hard being a student is because the teachers are shit. hs2 was like the characters of hs1 facing the real world by getting a job and having responsibilities and seeing them become more miserable by the minute, yet they're still friends (kinda) and see each other from time to time. hsr is the spinoff of that same story about that strange background character that didn't even appear on the show, yet everybody mentioned them at some point which surprisingly attracted too many fans just to discover she has depth and an insane amount of lore. in the end, people only remember the spinoff because it came out way later than the other ones, so it had a better production and direction team and better screenwriters lol. abh is just a random show from the same production company that wasn't doing numbers and it was only being kept afloat due to the actors being hot, so they decided to start hinting about its connection to the main saga...

...they'll most likely make a movie in the near future with all the mcs together as the protagonists as fan service, and it'll become the best-selling production of that company.

back from my mental illness and I need to comment on the whole "rc should make more male mcs" drama.

I think that rc definitely should be more inclusive and make stories that you are able to pick your gender, your preferred pronouns and the way you express yourself.

BUT it is also, an undeniable fact, that rc and most interactive fiction targets itself towards women. very frustrating thing for transmasc people and queer men but that's the reality of it.

I don't think people overstep by asking for more inclusivity identity and relationship wise but people can overstep by ignoring the fact that interactive fiction, especially romantic interactive fiction, has always been a safe space for women and it's mostly made by women for women.

many women consider this to be a safespace to be... themselves due to how restricting society is about a woman's love life and sexuality.

you can definitely be a part of this space if you're not a woman but at some points, you're forgetting that a genre made by women for women will always center more on the romance, sensuality and sexuality of women.

why is the author of hsr incapable of conceptualizing a wlw romance that does not have a sexuality crisis/societal homophobia as a central element? why is greg's route creating a new problem every update? it is not even that we as the readers don't see them as fully realized characters - the author doesn't see them as interesting enough on their own to carry out a romance with.

i'm all caught up on the dmitry romance, and i've seen quite a lot of cain's. why is it that both of them get the tension, the pining, the gradual closeness and what keeps them and lane apart is disregarded eventually because love wins i guess?

meanwhile anna's romance is 'slow burn' and 'angsty' and 'lane thinks they're just friends'...i really just think the author cannot imagine a gay ship being interesting without a backdrop of homophobia lol

and that's sort of what the problem is - interest, or lack thereof. the author doesn't think anna and greg's characters, on their own, can maintain reader interest. i've been romancing greg since the start and damn near every update there's some bullshit disagreement/conflict they have that the diamond scenes are then focused on resolving. rinse and repeat. lane can have two unfriendly interactions with greg about the squad drugging her. she is uniquely upset at greg's involvement in it because "i thought you were different". compare this to the dmitry scene, in which lane only brings the drugging up as a joke and dmitry finally says 'sorry', a season later when it no longer matters to anyone.

this brings us to greg's treatment as a whole. as someone else has pointed out, the black man is the only romance option you can actually kill. he is regarded by lane as the one having betrayed her most severely regarding the drugging, purely because what? they had one civil conversation beforehand?

onto s2 - greg is now the temporary leader of the squad. this changes nothing for him and lane. sure. in dmitry's train cabin scene, they have an exchange about this in which she tells dmitry her and greg "haven't interacted much", even if you've been romancing both. hey, at least the author's self aware? dmitry's position as general colors every single interaction he has with lane and the world, as well as the other characters, react to it. greg's position as his second-in-command is so irrelevant we find out about it only when dmitry is out of commission and someone else needs to lead the squad in his absence.

towards the season one finale, we find out the fate of emma, greg's sister. half of the ensuing interactions with him have lane thinking about how she's keeping this information from him. but she continues to do so with no good reason. 5 episodes later - the gym scene. i don't know about the mercy path, as my greg slot is not on it, but on the no compassion path, lane basically argues she can't tell him because she likes him and knowing the truth would somehow cause him to leave the squad. i simply don't buy this reason. first of all - why would greg, now knowing his sister died in the siberia base, not stay with the only people who could possibly know more about this base? second...where the fuck would he go lmao. one could argue this is simply lane being irrational, but no mercy lane has never before been portrayed as irrational, only lacking in empathy for other people. it's hard not to see this for what it is - another hook for conflict between them because the author, again, does not see greg as interesting enough on his own and feels she has to rely on cheap drama to keep readers invested.

gotta say 7 brothers is not my cup of tea... just out of personal preference. it's not something i seek out of media that i read but it's such a fun story.

it reminds me of like those episode stories that you used to find while scrolling through community stories and while their plot was similar to stuff you've seen before, the way it's written and structured is such a breath of fresh air.

I really like where the stories is going, how the love interests, the paths and the mc are written and while it's definitely not something I seek out, it is good.

I fucking hate people who don’t get why Kamal is so problematic. love him all you want idc but that’s a grown man who starts developing feelings for his best friend’s sister — which no issues with that trope obviously — except he’s known her her whole life !!! she grew up around him !!! he was born in 1856, he’s LITERALLY older than Vidya — the fucking head of the Basu family. devi was born in 1877. Amrita, Kamal’s sister, was born in 1880. you’re basically dating someone who could be your fucking sister.

and don’t even start with the “Oh, but Doran” argument. I am so sick of hearing it. we wanna talk about Doran? okay. well he didn’t see her grow up ! he wasn’t around her ! he isn’t her LEGAL GUARDIAN ! he’s not her mentor ! he doesn’t have that legal and emotional power slash control over her ! he’s not making decisions for her when she’s the only person of her family alive ! he’s not guiding her ! he’s not teaching her !

-> when someone has that kind of power and emotional influence over a person, it’s hard to justify any romantic feelings — like 21 years age gap aside, that’s just fucking creepy. he has power over her, and with that comes a moral obligation not to exploit it for personal gain !!!!! did none of yall take psychology classes and learn how that can fuck you up?

and not to be repetitive but Kamal knew Devi as a kid, as a teenager, and now as an adult. that means he has had decades of influence over her, and he is now in a position to control her life choices. that is a massive, glaring red flag. the fact that some people can’t see that is mind-blowing to me. how can anyone think it’s okay for him to suddenly decide he’s interested in her romantically? he was basically a father slash brother figure at points in her life! it’s just fucking gross.

if you’ve spent your entire life guiding someone, shaping their decisions, watching them grow up, you don’t get to suddenly flip that into a romantic pursuit. it’s messed up on every. single. level.

and don’t get me started on the way he crafted the whole Amrita / Raj / Radha mess and forced his young sister into a relationship by manipulating another minor.
