Thai Desserts in Until We Meet Again

Your little OCD BL fan here. 

Went on a tear looking up all the deserts in Until We Meet Again. 

Ready? 

1. Leum Kluen or Luem Gluen

ขนมลืมกลืน Translation: I forgot I swallowed or forget to swallow.  

Leum Kluen = Little cups of pandan-infused mung bean jelly (custard-like consistency) which is smoked using a special incense to add a floral jasmine scent, then topped with fluffy, salty coconut cream. It melts in the mouth - hence the name. Recipe here. 

In the first episode this is the dessert that causes Dean to post a photo captioned “never forget.” In the last episode he sends Pharm a post it note with the same message. 

Because of its meaning Leun Kluen also causes everyone to tease Dean when he mentions wanting to eat it (when he and Pharm are obviously dating).

2. Look Choup or Luk Chub 

ลูกชุบ Translation: Coated pieces

Meaning: loved by all, adored

Look Choup = Tiny imitation fruits or vegetables (or occasionally star shapes) these are made of mung beans cooked with coconut milk and sugar. Once formed, they are dipped in gelatin and painted with food coloring to resemble other food. Recipe here. 

This one appeared multiple times in Until We Meet Again, on the bus, at the fair, and at the very end during Dean and Pharm’s separation. 

3. Chor-Muang or Chor Muang

ขนมช่อม่วง - Blue Flower Dumpling

Chor Muang = purple or blue flower-shaped dumpling that is savory, stuffed with a spiced minced chicken. These days it is a popular appetizer but it was once served as a dessert. Recipe here. 

Chor Mung is a major catalyst food for the plot of Until We Meet Again. It is featured in a play starring Del and Manaow and is the reason Pharm meets and befriends Del. This allows him to start helping fix Dean’s strained family dynamic. 

Later he feeds this desert to Team, Win, and Dean in front of witnesses. This is the first time he feeds Dean (it will not be the last.) 

4. Bulan Dan Mek or Bulan Dun Mek or Bu Lan Dan Mek

ขนมบุหลันดั้นเมฆ Translation: the moon appearing among the clouds or… 

Bulan Dan Mek = a blue colored steamed custard made of flour, sugar, jasmine (or pandan) infused water or cococut milk, and butterfly pea extract. The middle is made of a dollop of egg yolks mixed with palm sugar. Recipe here. 

It appears in the faculty fair scene. 

5. Kanom Pra Pai 

Kanom Pra Pai = Steamed rice balls stuffed with sweet mung bean and topped with salted coconut. I couldn’t find out much about this dessert, but I did find a recipe. 

Kanom Pra Pai is the desert that inadvertently causes Pharm to seduce Dean into their first kiss. 

Also it’s the one we see him feed not-Can. 

6. Kanom Ko 

Kanom Ko = very similar to Khanom tom, which are boiled rice flour dumplings coated with shredded coconut and stuffed with a filling of shredded coconut melted along with palm sugar and coconut milk. Kanom Ko is made the same way, only smaller and stuffed only with palm sugar (so easier to make). 

In Khanom tom the coconut filling is infused with flower fragrance by using scented incense. It is still a common street food and is relatively easy to find in parts of Thailand. I couldn’t find a recipe for Kanom Ko but here is one for Khanom tom. 

This is the dessert Pharm teaches Del, Manaow, and Team to make in Dean’s kitchen. 

7. Ja Mong Kut or Ja Mongkut or Ja Mong Gut

จ่ามงกุฎ Translation: Crown

Meaning: superiority, triumph

Ja Mongkut = is made by combining egg yolks, coconut milk, sugar, and flour and cooking it very slowly until it forms a paste. This is carved into crown shape (or for Tong Ake a flower shape). This dessert is very very time intensive. It’s decorated with crispy pumpkin seeds coated in syrup. It is then smoked with an special incense candle to add flavor.

Pharm actually talks about how the one he makes is slightly different from the customary gold crown. But I could only find the traditional one online. Recipe here. 

This is the dessert that proves who Pharm really is to Dean’s grandmother, and helps her to believe that they are reincarnated. 

8. Tup Tim Krob or Tub Tim Grob

ทับทิมกรอบ Translation: Red Rubies 

Tup Tim Krob = is made by dyeing water chestnuts with red food coloring, then tossing them in tapioca flour/starch to give them a soft chewy exterior. They are served with syrup and coconut milk seasoned with salt. This one is actually pretty easy to make.  

This dessert isn’t named in the show but you see Pharm make it for Dean’s family after they come out to Dean’s dad. 

We also see Pharm messing up what I think is Thai Coconut Corn and Sago Pudding after Dean tells him they are going to have sex.
