For @lenorenevermore99, who suggested this pose but specifically as Marilyn’s iconic photo that appeared in the centerfold of Playboy’s first issue in December 1953 (that version under the cut).

In posting this I kind of feel obligated to point out that Marilyn didn’t pose for Playboy. She did nude photoshoot several years earlier, before she was famous, because she was broke and needed the $50 bucks they paid her. Hefner bought the photos and published them without her permission, which of course was totally legal at the time. Eventually she said it “helped” her career, and she also pointed out that she never received a thank you (or compensation) for helping launch the Playboy brand. With any other cover girl/centerfold in the first issue, would it have been successful? Who knows.

I think the photos are gorgeous. The pose, the coloring, Marilyn’s beauty— her little feet, her tummy, the look on her face— but ultimately they weren’t really something she initially wanted out there or something she was proud of when she posed for them. I consider this to be historically significant art, but still feel a little conflicted about posting this image here, so if anyone also feels kinda weird about it, I get it.

@nerdyhuntress tagged me to list 9 fave characters, thank you! I decided to limit this to just tv shows, and one per show, because idk if I could narrow down a list otherwise! Done a few of these type posts over the years and it’s always fun to see what changes and what stays.

In loosely chronological order based on my shoddy memory of when I watched the show or really fell in love with the character, because I can’t think of another way to order them. My beloveds:

Data, Star Trek: TNG. My first favorite character, I think. Eight year old me just recognized something there that I didn’t quite figure out for another few decades. Always trying to figure out what it means to be human. Always wanting to be better. Always implementing what he learns but still coming off slightly, endearingly off. Also he is fully functional. Programmed in multiple techniques. Can’t beat that. I love you Data.

Dana Scully, The X-files. Love at first sight? Yes. God. GODDDD. Troi/Riker may have been my bi-awakening but MSR singed, sealed, and delivered. Dana Scully was everything teenage me wanted to be— brilliant, logical, beautiful, brave, loyal, and in a situationship with Fox Mulder. (Also loosely and aesthetically based on Clarice Starling, one of my all time favorite book and movie characters god I love her so much.)

Olivia Dunham, Fringe. Gorgeous repressed genius FBI agent? So I have a type? Lol. Fringe as a show is SO important to me (about to get matching fandom tattoos with my kid from this show). I was so excited to see a sci-fi show with a female lead and even though ultimately the overall theme of the show became more about the father/son relationship instead of Olivia’s story, I can’t be mad about it. She’s so guarded and toxically independent and I’m in love with how she lets little bits of vulnerability out.

The Doctor, Doctor Who. Cheating bc this is like 15+ characters in one but whatever. Love all of them. Still mourning the most recent departure Ncuti Gatwa, who was HANDS DOWN the finest doctor, nay finest character, ever on that show. God he was so good. Unrivaled smile. I think my favorite (currently, it can fluctuate) is the Twelfth Doctor, though— “You're all the same, you screaming kids, you know that? Look at me, I'm unforgivable. Well here's the unforeseeable, I forgive you. After all you've done. I forgive you.”

Vanessa Ives, Penny Dreadful. What can I say, it’s Eva Green. Penny Dreadful isn’t super high on my list of favorite shows, it doesn’t feel very re-watchable, but she was amazing in it. I wanted to reach through the screen and hold her and comfort her and never let go. My TV girlfriend.

Chidi Anagonye The Good Place. Chidiiiiiii. Trying to learn and read and logic his way through the world, trying to intellectualize life and love and relationships and his own understanding of himself. Always getting a stomach ache from it. Are we the same person? Such a nerd and I fucking love him so much, every iteration of him.

Sameen Shaw, Person of Interest. This is just a good show, man. Had me cheering for the cops and the billionaire against Vigilance (and Leslie Odom’s fine ass). I can’t even stand Jim Caviezel and I still loved this show. And Sameen Shaw, and her ~Axis II Personality Disorder and alexithymia~, but dogs love her, and kids love her, and Root loved her, and I love her. “If you were a shape, you were a straight line. An arrow.” I’m gonna cry.

Louis de Pointe du Lac, Interview with the Vampire. I don’t care who’s on screen with Jacob Anderson, I cannot take my eyes off him, he is SO GOOD. My god. I liked the IWTV movie back in the day but I didn’t love it. I’m just not/never was a big fan of Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. So part of me was always like damn I hope they remake this someday. Wish? Granted. All of the casting for the IWTV tv series is perfect to me, but Louis? Toppest tier (Jacob made a whole Spotify playlist for his character for each season? Who does that? I adore him). But LdPdL the character? His eternal internal struggle, his chameleon like personality, his manipulative perpetual victim complex, his capacity for the deepest, most enduring, most obsessive and unhealthy love? The fact that he very much ate that baby? The MEOW??? Yes, gimme. So beautiful.

Seong Gihun. THEE character of all time. I don’t even have words for how much I love him. My whole blog with 500+ posts and hours of gif making and art making and 100K+ words of writing and I still haven’t scratched the surface of how much I love him. His kindness. His temper. His big dumb loud mouth. His trauma. His ADHD. His conviction. His massive heart, big enough to hold the whole world, all of humanity, inside it. His big doe eyes and his fat ass😭 No for real, though, I’ll never have the words for how much he means to me or how much an adore him, every single bit of him. He’s more real to me than a lot of the people I know. Part of me is always thinking about him. Part of me is always holding him in my heart, in the softest, coziest, safest part of it.

The playboy artwork I’m seeing is sooooo good 😭 Imagine Gihun is a playboy model and has a meet and greet and all the old men rush to his line. Inho is there of course, and is getting impatient, he’s getting sick of the men trying to flirt with him and almost starts a fight with one of the men in line… the man being the salesman 🤭. Anywho Inho finally gets to the front and has all his shit he wants Gihun to sign and almost shits himself seeing his future wife up close 🤗🤗🤗.

One of the most tragic things to me about Gihun is that he has no idea the effect he has on people. He’s just a good guy. He just cares about people. To him that’s nothing special that’s what you’re supposed to do.

He doesn’t know that Inho was fundamentally (allegedly) changed by him. He doesn’t know that Noeul was fundamentally changed by his actions despite never even interacting with him. He doesn’t realize that Park Mancheol and Kim Jeongrae are so fundamentally different from s1 to s2-3 because (at least in part) of him (and his money but also— him.)

He’ll never know the ripple effects that will spread out across the world. He won’t know about the people that Jeongrae helps that maybe he wouldn’t have before, because Gihun infected him with compassion and selflessness. He won’t know that Wooseok will at least attempt a legitimate business venture, a much safer option for him and his family than what he was doing before. He won’t know that Gyeongseok escaped (escaped! probably never happened before) in part because he was moved by Gihun and joined him in the rebellion.

He won’t find out what Cheol, or Junhee’s baby, or Noeul’s daughter will grow up to become— kids who get to grow up safe and loved thanks to Gihun’s kindness and persistence and sacrifice. He won’t find out how Gayeong grows up, how she’ll mourn him, how she’ll keep his memory alive by nurturing the parts of him in her— kindness, compassion, empathy (I have absolutely no doubt.)

He’ll never know how he impacted and changed those of us on the other side of the fourth wall, even the man who dreamed him up and the actor who played him.

I’m gonna cry.

it’s so crazy to me that inho (properly) interacted with gihun for what, a little over two days, and those days changed the way he’d been thinking for years?

he was so affected by gihun that he changed. he’s like, the embodiment of to be loved is to be changed, because gihun loved people. he loved humanity.
