RN Portfolio 7: Period Style
Art Nouveau
Tumblr media
Art Nouveau was a style of art that was popular during 1890-1910 throughout the United States and parts of Europe. Art Nouveau is a French term which means “new art”. This design is characterized by different uses of unique organic lines and curves commonly used in interior design or on different types of glass.
Art Deco
Tumblr media
Art Deco design first made its appearance just before World War One in France. Art Deco incorporates different shapes that are symmetrical and often simple with bright colors. Art Deco during the 1920s was shown through architecture and buildings as well as jewelry and other items.
Late-Modernism
Tumblr media
Late modernism was the period of time starting at the end of World War 2 and at the start of the 21st century. Artists emphasized different geometric bold shapes with corners and different glass to create a highly articulated design. New York has always been known to have some of the best architecture to display this late modern period.

This picture displays different types of furniture that would be present during the Renaissance period. Although I don’t have a specific time frame from when this furniture was created from the research I conducted I believe it was from the time frame around 1500s and these pieces were created in Italy.
Tumblr media
This second photo is from the Rococo era. This image displays a beautiful chandelier with various colors on the ceilings and walls with gold accents and various moldings creating a bold look. During the rococo era, design was created to have a theatrical and ornamental look combining different colors of pastels and different moldings. This design was located in Paris and again, I don’t have an exact time frame but from looking at other designs I would guess it was created around 1750.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My home is a combination of a lot of different styles. When looking around my house these two styles really stuck out to me. Both these pictures were taken in the foyer of my home. The first picture shows styles from the renaissance period with the white molding. The rug was designed in Pakistan and has various colors and designs making it memorizing to look at. The second picture is of a piece of furniture my mom actually purchased. This is an oriental-influenced style. The black color with the gold design really stands out to create a contrast with Asian styled paintings. These pictures show that different styles from different design periods can be incorporated to create one big picture and design. I think it is good to have different types of furniture as having everything the same can be cliche and boring. #WEEK6TMD126

RN Portfolio #4
Tumblr media
This hospital room is similar to the one that patients are provided with when receiving treatment at the hospital I work at. The rooms are dark and dreary. The furniture is not welcoming. The colors are dull and depressing. Staying in a hospital is never easy to begin with, it can be scary and unpredictable. These patient rooms are not inviting and do not make the already stressful experience better. The room overall is very dated and lacks a warm and comfortable feeling for patients.
Tumblr media
Using the scamper model I would use modify to improve the first room showed. The above picture shows a more modern patient hospital room. It is warm with colors throughout the room creating a more open feel for not only the patient but friends and family. The Narcarella 2016 article talks about how good design produces an environment that accommodates everyone to an acceptable level of satisfaction. The picture of flowers creates a positive welcoming feeling upon entering the room. The windows in the room allow for natural light to enter the room allowing it to feel warm. Windows should be a necessity in all hospital rooms so patients are still able to view the outdoor scenery and create a feeling that you’re not stuck in a hospital room especially for those that are there for long periods of time. Improving patient rooms could improve patient positivity and satisfaction, overall improving patients outcomes.

RN Portfolio 3: Elements
Lines
Tumblr media
Many people are using wood beams to add a natural element to the home. Lines are used throughout this design to provide a consistent even look. The lines in this picture create a focus point and attract the audience to that area of the room. The brown wood color of the beams creates a contrast against the light color of the room allowing them to stand out.
Texture
Tumblr media
One of my necessities during the winter months are warm blankets. These plush sherpa blankets create a warm feeling to anyone who is using it and come in a variety of colors. The texture of the blanket is smooth and soft to the touch. These blankets create a comforting feeling creating a sense of relaxation when resting or sleeping.
Extra Object
Tumblr media
The design of the Apple Watch is something I utilize on a daily basis. This watch motivates me and encourages me to stay active throughout the day no matter what I am doing. If I am sitting for more than hour it will vibrate and display a message stating that I need to stand up. Not only does it help keep track of my fitness but it shows me incoming messages, weather, emails and many other things. The design is sleek and light weight allowing for comfortable wear throughout the day. The display screen is very user friendly and allows for easy access to various application. There are many different sensory experiences with this design. Including, touch, sound and sight creating an overall enjoyable experience for daily use.

2.Pyxis medication dispensing machines are popular tools used in hospitals throughout the United States. Pyxis machines can hold a variety of medications including ones that need to be refrigerated. This machine creates convince to nurses who are dispensing many medications to patients as you do not have to search for every medication. The design of the automatically opening drawers for a specific medication is key in this design for accuracy when dispensing medications to prevent potentially fatal medication errors.
3.The Pyxis medication station is an automatic medication dispensing machine. There is a touch screen on top of a big aluminum box that contains many horizontal drawers. This touch screen correlates with various drawers. When you touch the screen you must use your fingerprint to gain access to ensure you are a verified user. When you select a patients name on the screen all of their medications are listed. You can then select a specific medication and hit “remove.” A specific drawer will open. Within each drawer there are many pockets holding different medications. The pocket within the drawer will open and you will have access to remove the selected medication.

These pictures display a typical Pyxis machine that would be present in most hospitals. The first picture displays what the machine looks like as a whole. The second picture shows the integrative touch screen used to select certain patients and medications. The next two pictures display different drawers and pockets that are used to store a variety of medications that are available at your fingertips. The last two pictures show nurses easily using the Pyxis machine to deliver medications to their patients.
5. It would be necessary to bring three objects that the audience could touch and hold to effectively understand the use of this machine. The first object I would bring would be an example of the touch screen used on every Pyxis machine so the audience could understand how convenient and user friendly it is for nurses. The next object I would bring would be an example of a pocket in which the medications are held in to show how they easily open and close when a medication is selected. The last thing I would bring with me is the barcode reader that is present on pyxis machines to show that you can easily scan medications as well. Because of the weight and size of the machine it would be hard to demonstrate on the actual machine so these other objects would give a good understanding of how the machine can actually work.
6. As stated in the article “Our business is in patient care, providing the best possible patient experience and the best possible patient outcomes” (Eagle, 2016). When patients come into the hospital they are already nervous about their stay, we want to make them as comfortable as possible. With a Pyxis machine nurses are able to deliver medications in a timely fashion to ensure that patients are receiving the best care possible. This machine also promote safety by decreased medication errors as it will not allow you to pull out medications unless it’s within a specific time frame.

After the reading I decided to choose number 7, minimize fatigue of staff. I believe this is a very important topic that all nurses should be aware of in the field. This is something that is very relevant to me at my job as many nurses tend to get burnt out due to mandated overtime, which at times, could force nurses to work sixteen hours a day. There are also times where staffing is at a minimum and nurses are forced to work with minimal resources. Adequate staff is required to provide quality care to all patients. It is very common for staff to get sick due to exhaustion and overworking. As a nurse we are expected to work holidays, snow storms and weekends without complaint. However, working double shifts and overtime can be physically and mentally tiring. When considering the seven stages of design this issue would have to start at the ideation stage. This is necessary to gather different ideas from different sources in order to come up with a well rounded solution. Brainstorming ideas would be required to come up with ideas that are practical yet create a solution to the problem. Something that would be beneficial would enforcing a rule stating the maximum hours you are allowed can work in a pay period and if you meet that maximum you could be exempt from being required to work overtime. To improve these areas of overworking and understaffing I would need to use the Adapt area of the SCAMPER method. By using the Adapt option it lets you explore other options and solutions for a specific problem. No system is ever perfect and there is always room for improvement. This is where Adapt comes into place. This would allow managers to make adjustments in already existing policies, or lack there of, to promote the health and well being of all staff members. Hospitals should also enforce adequate staffing levels to ensure the safety of both the patients and staff. Some areas may need to be trial and error however this is what the Adapt aspect is about, trying different techniques and figuring out what works best. Nurses are adapting to undesirable situations every day however it is ideal to make the best work environment possible. With promoting staff wellness and reducing fatigue the patients will overall receive better treatment from the nurses that are caring for them. According to the hierarchy of needs I would categorize our current system as functionality due to the poor guidelines that are in place. Functionality is required in order to find weaknesses and improve on them for the future. Following the scamper method the system would be on a proficiency level. Nurses would excel at their jobs and improve personal performance and quality of care delivered.

Many use their living room as the center point of their home. We all use our living rooms for family gatherings and holidays throughout the year as well as casual weekends at home with loved ones. Upon moving into my new home two years ago I noticed a design flaw that still bothers me to this day. Our bookcase/ entertainment area contains many shelves however they are not capeable of moving positions if needed. This has caused our already purchased television from our previous house to overlap in front of the shelves. We were forced to put our television in front of the bookcase due to the stationary shelves. Although it is still functional it is not aesthetically pleasing. This is the design problem. The shelves should be able to move to accommodate a variety of objects. This could have been redesigned with removable shelves. Like Leonard D’Avolio stated “ Design, on the other hand, begins by gaining an understanding of how a system is likely to be used within a given environment and creating that system accordingly”.
