as a knitter, you start to notice how rare it is for characters in tv shows and movies to knit correctly. from worst to best, it ranges from:

- laughably incorrect, just flinging yarn around

- knitting the most basic scarf incredibly slowly because the actor Learned How To Do It For The Role

- old lady actresses casually knitting an intricate lace pattern while doing a monologue

- gromit from wallace and gromit

if you've never engaged with a creative art on a regular basis you need to understand that it requires concerted effort to get into "the groove" to make something and every second that it takes to get into that groove causes physical pain, but the only thing worse than doing it is not doing it.

*firmly grabbing all beginner artists by the shoulders* you have to embrace inconsistency. inconsistency is good because it means you are learning. if you focus too hard on making all your art look the same you are really just holding yourself back and forcing yourself to make the same mistakes rather than develop and grow. style and consistency can come later on when your grasp on the fundamentals is stronger. now take this juice box and get out there and make some art.

Plus make sure to take breaks regularly - and stop if anything starts to hurt!

especially with gift knitting I know it can be tempting to push through it for a deadline, but it’s really not worth causing long term injury. (And anyone knit-worthy should be understanding of that, imho.) Stay well :)

for the hoard: crocodile stitch

i remember seeing (and still see) those “dragon scale armwarmers” all over dragonkin tumblr and being infinitely jealous. i’m glad to report that i’ve found a great tutorial for how to do this stitch! (the photo in this post is from that page)

once you know this stitch, you can make it into anything– gloves, hats, slippers… you could even make a whole blanket if you’re dedicated enough! the texture also reminds me of feathers, so this could be a great alternative if you don’t like the texture of feathers, or for vegans who don’t want to wear animal parts :)

(a word of warning: this is a more complex stitch, so if you’re looking to get into crochet, definitely try and familiarize yourself with basic crochet stitches and terms before trying this).
