A customer found a pair of antique mountain goat shoulder mounts by the curb of a mansion in Newport, RI. She brought them home and then brought them to the studio for a cleaning. The fur was falling out in handfuls and the skins were very dried out and cracked so they’d never hold up to a cleaning. (Mountain goats are pure white btw!) Phew! Ever have a “just for fun” project that goes all Murphy’s law on you and takes wayyy longer than anticipated and you don’t even want think about how many hours it’s taken, and you lose steam for the project when you are not even close to done or sure if/how it can be finished? Well, that was this guy for me. Boy, am I glad he’s done and thankful for all the help I had trouble shooting to get him standing. I actually bought the materials for this last January as a birthday present to myself thinking it would be a fun project, ha! 🤦🏼‍♀️ His name is Ramboar, he was originally supposed to be a Rambo boar. Then he was momentarily a lumberjack. Then, in his final form, a “dumb” waiter. Anyway, he’ll be for sale tomorrow, as I’ll be joining Josh at his IG live @taxidermyauction tomorrow starting at 3pm until 10ish. So please pop in and comment hello? These peacocks are going to their new home on Central Park South in Manhattan this weekend! The bodies were beat up dusty vintage with broken necks. We cleaned them up and added new crests. The detachable tails were fabricated here at the studio. For the pedestals we stripped the wood and made new perches with bases. Excited for them to find their new home!*** Sometimes cool stuff comes through the taxidermy studio. This is a Walter Potter style, Victorian-era taxidermy diorama of squirrels playing cards. Certainly European and from the 1890s or earlier. Last pics shows the condition it was brought in to the studio by David who bought it at Brimfield in the 1970s! It features five European red squirrels in a furnished sitting room— three playing cards, one reading at the table, and one writing a letter with a quill pen (“I am just about to leave for London”). Had this piece appraised by British taxidermy historian Pat Morris for provenance.
