I feel like Henderson's been talked about quite a bit in a similar vein but as far as like, villain characters who are just complete bastards but you're still supposed to feel bad about what happens to them
I just appreciate that... like the fact that it's written in such a way where it's not that he had secretly redeeming traits or something, more so the fact that what happens to him is a horrifying thing to happen to anyone. It's, again, the absence of a moral thesis statement on how you're supposed to feel about him that makes it easier to drink in the horror of it.
idk it's just such an unbearable ass-pull when a character you have every reason to hate is painted in a pitiful light in that really ham-fisted way and it completely brings you out of the moment because it feels like the writer really wants you to come to some objective moral conclusion, often in a way that feels very inauthentic and sometimes just counterintuitive to any more nuanced conclusion you could have drawn.
Henderson I think is really well executed though because it's not like "yes you should forgive your landlord" or "you should feel sorry for war vets" but more like. In this dire situation his rigidness, his distrusting outlook and his militaristic mindset have only made his reality worse. At the end of the day, it's the apocalypse, and he's just a lonely, somewhat unhinged, disabled old man. He doesn't do anything to "redeem" himself, but he still doesn't deserve what happens to him.
Like. I appreciate that. I think it's a sign of strong writing if you don't have to like, forcibly try to push someone into feeling a certain way about a certain character, rather than just having their narrative speak for itself.

hate the weird self-infantalizing “but i’m just playing with my dolls” shit people will pull in response to any critique of overall fandom trends, especially wrt racism, misogyny, transphobia, etc. very embarrassing to be a grown ass adult yet still so myopic and devoid of self-reflection
