Piper finished helping Timothy tie his shoes, gently patting him on the back to encourage him to go play outside with the other kids, before turning around to address the young woman who stood in the entryway of Bright Beginnings preschool.

“Hi, can I help you?” Piper asked the stranger.

The young, dark-haired woman played with her keychain, but kept her eyes focussed on Piper. “Yeah, I’m here to pick up my niece, Aly—”

“Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” Alya FitzSimmons piped up. The little girl ran inside and immediately flung her arms around the stranger’s hips.

“—a,” Daisy finished, barely holding her balance, and placing one arm around Alya’s shoulders. “Hi, little monkey.”

“Alright, what about this one?” Daisy drew back the curtain to the changing room with vigor and annoyance. She stepped out, dropping her head back and closing her eyes. “God, the longer we’re at this, the more annoyed I’m getting with Trish. Pick your own bridesmaid dress. Anything green. Just a cute green cocktail dress. It’ll be great. Green. Green?”

“Well, I’m not really the right person to ask about cocktail dresses,” an unfamiliar female voice replied. “I’m more of a suit kinda gal, but—”

Daisy’s head dropped forward and her eyes opened in surprise. She looked at the short-haired woman sitting on one of the chairs in the changing area. “You’re not Jemma.”

The woman grinned back at her. “Definitely not Jemma.”

My first FitzSimmons family art! I want to draw them in their little cottage in Perthshire in their new quiet life but I’ve always loved drawing the stars and the fact that they “found” Alya in the stars is such a beautiful and poetic thought for FitzSimmons.
