The bell rings, signaling the start of class.

“The teacher’s not here yet,” Taehyung grins, already up to something. He leans over to the boy next to him. “Let’s be friends,” he says, offering a hand with way too much confidence for someone he’s known for all of two minutes. Jaekyung just stares at the hand. Doesn’t move. Doesn’t blink. Then with a soft tsk, he jams his hands into his pockets instead. On his other side, Jeongguk lets out a low snicker. “Yeah, no. I already know who the class troublemaker’s gonna be.”

Yoongi walks in, barely through the door when he mutters, “Alright, quiet down. Quiet. Quiet.” Taehyung’s on his feet in a flash, throwing a dramatic bow. “Good morning, teacher!” Jaekyung winces like he’s just been hit. He lifts a hand to cover one ear and mutters, “Who sat me next to this guy? I’m gonna need painkillers before first period’s over.”

“I’ll do roll call, then we’ll start,” Yoongi says, sounding like he stayed up way too late last night. “Alright… RM, Jin—” “PRESENT!” Jin suddenly yells, startling everyone. The class bursts into laughter. Yoongi sighs, rubbing his temple. “Quiet. Quiet. Don’t encourage him.”

“J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook, Jaekyung…” Yoongi calls out, eyes scanning the room. Jaekyung raises his hand with the laziest wave known to man. “Jaekyung,” Yoongi repeats, unimpressed. “Is he not here?” The maknae tilts his head back like he’s contemplating the ceiling, trying, and failing, to hide a smirk. “Here,” he says at last, dragging the word out like it’s a chore.

“Jaekyung’s here, Teacher,” Jeongguk pipes up, grabbing the boy’s arm and lifting it like a trophy. Yoongi doesn’t even bat an eye. He turns to the board, chalk in hand. “Alright. I’m Min Suga,” he says, scribbling his name with the energy of someone who’s done this way too many times. “We’ve got four classes today,” he adds, deadpan. “Brace yourselves.”

Once the rules for the episode are laid out, Yoongi steps forward again. “Before class starts, we’ll play a quick game to split into teams,” he says. “It’s rock-paper-scissors but we’re skipping paper. Just rock and scissors to make two groups.”

The results of the game are: Team Scissors which consists of RM, J-Hope, Jimin & V and Team Rock which consists of Jin, Jungkook & Jaekyung.

“Actually, you know what? Let’s just go with the groups you’re already sitting in,” Yoongi decides, waving off his own plan. Jaekyung visibly deflates in his seat, like someone just cancelled his vacation. Across the room, Jimin bursts out laughing and points at him. “Look at his face. He’s so disappointed.” J-Hope grins, leaning in. “Why do you look like that? Do you hate your team that much?”

Jaekyung stays slumped in his seat, arms crossed, clearly unbothered—or so he wants everyone to think. Jin leans over Taehyung’s shoulder, eyeing the youngest. “It’s ‘cause he’s stuck next to the teacher’s pet,” he says, loud enough for half the room to hear. Taehyung flashes his signature boxy smile, completely unfazed. “Who, me?” Jaekyung raises a hand, deadpan. “Teacher, are the groups final?” His tone screams please save me, even if his face stays perfectly blank.

“Anyway, groups are set,” Yoongi says, casually steamrolling right over Jaekyung’s question. “Ah, this teacher is…” Namjoon mutters under his breath. “…just making it up as he goes,” Hoseok finishes, exchanging a look with Namjoon like they’ve silently joined Team Jaekyung in protest. Jaekyung doesn’t say anything, just sinks further into his seat like he’s accepted his fate.

Due to the disagreements from the students, Teacher Yoongi relents and allows them to redo the rock-scissors game to divide the teams again.

The new teams are as follows: Team Scissors consists of RM, Jin & V and Team Rock consists of J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook & Jaekyung.

“Alright, that’s it!” Jaekyung bursts out, practically bouncing out of his seat with excitement. Around him, the other boys seem to nod in approval, shifting spots as the new teams settle in. “Hey, check it out. The Kim brothers ended up on the same team!”

“Looks like the Jeons are with us,” Jimin announces as the two youngest settle into their seats. Jaekyung ends up sandwiched between Jimin and Jeongguk. Jimin gives him a once-over, eyebrows raised. “You’ve got some serious muscle. Are you on the wrestling team or something?” Before Jaekyung can reply, Hoseok snatches Jimin’s arm and yanks him back. “Not now, Jimin,” he mutters.

Teacher Yoongi asks the two teams to pick a name for themselves.

“Team Jeon Jaekyung, Teacher,” Jimin announces on behalf of the group, flashing a grin in Jaekyung’s direction, who barely reacts. The opposing side settles on ‘Team Kim Seokjin.’ Yoongi, watching the exchange, shrugs. “Alright, I guess I have to pick a side now,” he says. “Not that I’ll be much use.”

To wrap it up, Yoongi draws a straw from the mixed pile labelled with both team names, landing himself in Team Jeon Jaekyung. He keeps the result to himself, leaving the others guessing about which side he’s joined.

Next, the students get to pick three penalties to include in the penalty roulette. They go with buying ice cream for the staff, wearing a BT21 neck pillow of the characters from the team that wins, and wearing BT21 masks of the characters from the team that wins.

Yoongi claps his hands, drawing the room’s attention. “Alright, let’s kick off our first class,” he says. “And we’re starting strong with the class president election!” As the bell rings, the students pound their desks in sync with its chime, creating an energising beat. One by one, they’re called to the front, each expected to win the class over with a short pitch. Namjoon steps up first, eyes steady, ready to speak.

Namjoon heads toward the blackboard, marker in hand, ready to write his name until Yoongi stops him with a laugh. “Nope, that’s not how we do it!” Jin states, barely containing his amusement. “Did you even go to school?” Jimin shouts, exasperated. “Use chalk,” Yoongi adds, pointing at the tray. Jaekyung watches in disbelief, eyebrows raised. “Is this guy even qualified to be in this class?” he asks. Hoseok nods solemnly. “Definitely a little strange.”

Jimin raises an eyebrow. “Not exactly class president material, if you ask me.” Namjoon mutters under his breath, “Guess they skipped whiteboards at his school.” Hoseok leans in, sharing quietly, “Word is he ranked first back in his old school.” Jimin lets out a laugh. “What, was he homeschooled?” Jaekyung snorts. “Bet he graded his own papers too.”

Namjoon wraps up his pitch with an impromptu dance, earning chuckles and a few impressed nods. Jin follows, and the election continues smoothly down the age line until finally, it’s Jaekyung’s moment. The youngest struts up to the front with exaggerated swagger, prompting a chorus of “Oooooh!” from the boys. Jin leans toward his teammates, voice low. “Isn’t he that troublemaker? Heard he throws punches just for people having a different opinion to him.”

Jaekyung keeps a straight face, but the smile tugging at his lips betrays him as he scribbles his name on the board and spins around. Hoseok leans back, eyeing him. “With a guy that size leading us? No other class would dare challenge Class Giant.” Jimin squints. “This is middle school, right? How’s he already hit puberty?”

A hush falls over the room as Jaekyung casually plants his arms on Yoongi’s desk, cool and unreadable. A few boys glance around, puzzled. “Wait... is he mute?” someone whispers. Then Jaekyung finally lifts his head, voice calm but chilling. “If I become class president… you’ll all regret it.”

As the school bell chimes, signaling his moment to shine, Jaekyung pivots smoothly and hits the iconic MJ pelvic thrust before gliding across the floor in a flawless moonwalk back to his seat. Hoseok’s jaw drops. “Wait—is he even from here? He could be Michael Jackson’s descendant!” The rest of the boys leap to their feet, applauding wildly, giving the maknae a full-on standing ovation. “Wah… who would've thought the class bruiser had moves like that?” one of them mutters, half in awe, half in disbelief.

After everyone has given their speeches, Yoongi holds up a stack of paper and starts handing it out, his voice cutting through the chatter. “Class president comes with some serious perks,” he announces. “And remember; no voting for yourself.”

Once everyone has picked their choice for president, Yoongi counts the votes live. It’s a close match between Jeongguk and Jaekyung with one more vote remaining to be counted.

Jaekyung clicks his tongue, clearly unimpressed. “Tch, I told you not to vote for me.” Jeongguk glances over at the youngest, offering a quiet gesture of solidarity. “No matter who wins, we’ve got each other, yeah?” He extends a fist. Jaekyung shrugs and bumps it with his own. “Deal.” As the final vote is read out, it tips the scale in Jeongguk’s favour. Jaekyung is the first to clap, smacking Jeongguk on the shoulder with a proud grin.

Yoongi steps forward. “By the votes, our new class president is… Jeon Jungkook.” A ripple of reaction spreads across the room. “Yah, I’ve got goosebumps,” Jin murmurs, rubbing his arms. Jaekyung blinks, then bursts into laughter, breaking character. “Wait, who actually voted for me after that mess of a speech?” Jin, Jimin, and Jeongguk sheepishly raise their hands. “I figured you’d body-check anyone who tried to steal my lunch money,” Jin admits. Jeongguk shrugs, grinning. “That moonwalk sealed the deal.” “And I figured you’d boost our rep,” Jimin adds. “We’d be the coolest class in school.”

Yoongi steps forward again, ready to continue. “Alright, time for our second class,” he says. “Since this is a school with a focus on music…” Before he can finish, Jaekyung interrupts with a confused look. “Wait, our school’s about music, Teach?” Unfazed, Yoongi points straight at Jaekyung. “Students gifted in singing,” he says, then gestures to some others, “and students who’ve got a knack for rapping.”

Yoongi claps his hands to gather the class’s attention. “Alright, second class is music!” he says again. “And your instrument for today… hand bells.” Taehyung and Jaekyung blink in unison. “Handbag?” they echo, confused. Jimin bursts into laughter, and soon the rest of the class is chiming in, repeating the mistake like an echo chamber. “Hand bells,” Yoongi corrects with a sigh, waving the actual instruments for emphasis. “You’ve got ten minutes to figure out how not to embarrass yourselves.”

The staff distribute a variety of hand bells, each ringing with a different pitch as the boys begin to experiment with them. Off to the side, the youngest two are completely absorbed, piecing together scales in their own quiet rhythm. Hoseok nudges Jimin with a grin. “Looks like the Jeons have some musical chops too.”

Jimin puffs out his chest playfully. “Yah, I can do this too,” he says, prompting Hoseok to burst into laughter. “I’m not a rapper,” he adds, exasperated. Jaekyung watches the exchange with a grin, trading bells with Jeongguk as their hyungs banter. “I’m a singer,” Jimin says proudly, turning to Hoseok. “Bet you didn’t know that, huh?”

Yoongi begins distributing music sheets to each group, his tone upbeat. “Today’s piece is the Celebrated Chop Waltz,” he announces. “And fun fact—Taehyung’s practically a veteran. He’s been playing this one for eight years.”

For the next ten minutes, both teams dive into rehearsing the Celebrated Chop Waltz with their hand bells, each group clanging and chiming away in rhythm. Team Jeon Jaekyung nails the tune twice before the clock runs out, choosing to rest their ringing ears for the remainder. Meanwhile, Team Kim Seokjin is still working through the piece, stuck around the halfway mark on the music sheet.

Yoongi shoots up from his chair, voice sharp and urgent. “Time’s up. Ten minutes!” he shouts, slamming his clipboard down on the desk with a loud thud. “Stop! Stop, stop, stop!”

HEIGHT COMPARISONS

note: btw i saw some slight discourse about some of the members heights on different platforms so this may not be entirely accurate.

jaekyung is the tallest member amongst the group, easily towering over the rest of the boys with a height difference of six inches between him and the shortest members yoongi and jimin. this makes him stick out often in stuff like interviews when the boys are all standing next to each other, especially since the others are quite closely aligned in height compared to jaekyung.

insight : an account dedicated to the distribution of jeon jaekyung’s private information and pictures in exchange for money or other information about jaekyung.

This user had simply started out as a fan that followed Jaekyung religiously in the sense that they would attend every tour and concert for him in almost every country. It was only until one day they came across him at a club with friends where they decided to venture further, invading his privacy.

Due to the footage and pictures released from this, Jaekyung had received backlash from a small group of netizens who were upset that he had been exuding ‘inappropriate behaviour’ because he was captured drinking and seemed a little tipsy. Then soon enough, other solo stans of Jaekyung would start to send in requests to this user, wishing to gain more information on their idol’s personal life which is how the account turned more transactional.

the boys’ reaction : as jaekyung was a generally sweet guy, they were already rather protective of the maknae to begin with so this situation only worked to irritate the members on jaekyung’s behalf. their first priority was to bring it up with staff, and for extra measure they made sure one of them was always with jaekyung.

insight : an account dedicated to ‘spreading the truth’ about jaekyung through hate and false rumours. an ot7 stan that wants jaekyung out of bts.

This user is a particularly nasty one. They believe that BTS should strive forward as seven members instead of eight, excluding Jaekyung out because he supposedly holds the group back and takes the spotlight away from the others because of his position as both main vocalist and lead dancer.

In order to garner support for this opinion, they will often take clips of the group’s content and cast Jaekyung maliciously with commentary about how he’s too condescending or sometimes, on extreme occasions, abusive to the other members. This had caused a lot of grief for Jaekyung who had at one point stumbled across one of these clips, causing him anxiety and paranoia around his members because he was afraid his actions would be misinterpreted again.

the boys’ reaction : the members were very quick to notice something was wrong. jaekyung’s change in behaviour had them concerned and wishing to find out what was wrong, and after some coaxing, jaekyung had given in. it’s safe to say they were very outspoken about this incident, going to weverse to post their thoughts and utter disgust at the user behind the controversy. they made sure legal action was taken and comforted jaekyung immensely.

insight : an account under the impression that they are destined to be together with jaekyung/that jaekyung is secretly infatuated with them.

This user had started out pretty harmless. She was an ordinary fan but held a very big liking to Jaekyung which is why she would often attempt to gain access to fan meets in order to meet him. She was lucky enough to win quite a few times surprisingly, meaning she had gotten to know him just a little under controlled circumstances.

Jaekyung had been pleasantly surprised himself to see her win an opportunity to two different fan meets at first, and even congratulated her, but soon he was beginning to get slightly irked after the third time. of course he continued to portray a polite image but then she started to take it the wrong way. she believed that he found it sweet that she somehow always managed to win an opportunity to see him.

It was only a matter of time though until people began complaining, requesting HYBE to take measures for these fan meets so others got an opportunity to meet their idols too. This is when the obsession started, leading to the stalking. This sasaeng would attempt to find out where Jaekyung hung out and would show up there, pretending it was a coincidence and that it was ‘fate’.

the boys’ reaction : the others really felt for jaekyung with this one because they know just how much the maknae’s personal life means to him. this sasaeng was completely unpredictable, sending creepy and strange gifts to jaekyung’s address which the members were a witness to as well whenever they would come over to his apartment. this was the situation that first led to jaekyung being appointed his own team of personal bodyguards.

insight : an account that is a copycat of dispatch but far more vicious and with the sole focus of obtaining information on jeon jaekyung by any means necessary.

This user is probably one of the most infamous amongst ARMYs with a very vast following that only seems to grow as time goes on. A lot of people misjudge this user as being an innocent stan account for Jaekyung but the reality is that this user doesn’t care much about acts of stalking; they will do anything to inform their followers of what’s going on in Jaekyung’s life, particularly with his romantic involvement with others. There have been attempts to hack into his private messages on his phone to obtain such information.

There has also been multiple occasions where rumours have sprung up that lead back to this user about Jaekyung dating, even just from being citied with a woman alone. It’s unsurprisingly led to him distancing himself from being seen with his female friends and colleagues in public and has led to hate and death threats being thrown at them if they are identified.

the boys’ reaction : this sasaeng had them feeling really bitter because it affected jaekyung the most. he never had a good relationship with bullies and the boys were aware it made jaekyung feel guilty towards his friends because of the hurt he felt he was causing, for putting them through this sort of treatment, so his hyungs offered their hand in helping jaekyung find a middle ground, often telling him of different places where they could find privacy and not be followed so easily.

JAEKYUNG WITH HYBE STAFF

note : i honestly dk the management system with bangtan but for simplicity’s sake i’m gonna have jae have his own personal manager.

Jaekyung’s manager, lovingly called Manager Yonghwan by ARMYs, is an ever loving presence within the fandom because of how well the man has taken care of their maknae over the years. It was after the sudden rise of the group that each of the members were allocated personal managers, while before this, they were managed by two men who have since been replaced.

Yonghwan always went out of his way to check up on Jaekyung because he was aware of some mistreatment that went on behind the scenes with the previous managers. He would often buy snacks for Jaekyung while he was practicing for performances and send him messages almost every night before he went to sleep, asking him to get a good night’s rest, that he did well and to not stay up too late because they had an early start the next day.

Jaekyung sees Yonghwan as a father figure and absolutely adores him, even posting pictures of them hanging out from time to time or occasions where Yonghwan would surprise Jaekyung with cake or take him out for a drink on his birthday. He’s advocated many times that he probably wouldn’t have made it so far in his career if it wasn’t for Yonghwan’s constant stream of support.

The stylists at HYBE love love love to dote on Jaekyung. For a lot of the women, Jaekyung is close to their own sons’ age which tends to bring out their motherly instincts quite quickly in terms of wanting to make sure the boy is always comfortable. If anybody were to ask them, they’d honestly only have good things to say and it’s actually a well known fact amongst the stylists that Jaekyung is considered a pleasure to work with because he’s very accommodating with his “manner legs” due to his tall stature.

For the men, although Jaekyung is still considered a delight by them, he is far more willing to play the role of the bratty maknae who can’t seem to sit still. He will side with the women and tease them but also isn’t afraid to joke with them as they tend to be close enough in age for him to be able to call them “hyung” and have that sort of friendly banter.

Overall, their favourite part about working with Jaekyung is that he’s never picky about anything. Although a lot of the time idols don’t get a say in their looks, a lot will still try to push for a certain style that coincides with what they’re comfortable with but Jaekyung is never like that. He’s polite, thanking the stylists for making him look pretty during every new concept.

Of the many groups that work within HYBE, Jaekyung thinks he might be the closest with his backup dancers, a lot of whom have been with him perhaps as long as his own hyungs have. He always found himself admiring their hard work and support as they have to put just as much effort into the performances as him but oftentimes to a lesser extent of recognition in return.

He makes it his mission to make sure they know exactly how much he appreciates their service. During breaks, he will try to talk to a lot of them individually and see how they’re getting along, sometimes buying the group snacks and drinks and taking them out as a treat after a particularly successful performance or concert. In turn, the group of dancers try to go out of their way to show Jaekyung how much they appreciate his recognition as well.

The bond between Jaekyung and the backup dancers is built on respect and admiration. Due to his sweet nature and gentle presence, the dancers never have a problem making suggestions on what could elevate the choreography or sometimes asking Jaekyung for advice on certain steps that he seems to be able to execute better than the experts. They have a really close friendship.

For the camera crew, spending a day with Jaekyung for work can either be a hit or a miss, also depending on who gets assigned with filming him. During filming for things such as Bangtan Bombs or documentaries, Jaekyung can be a delight who will liven up the place by making jokes and often trying to make conversation with his assigned crew member even though he knows they can’t really respond. A lot of the crew enjoys spending time filming Jaekyung during these things because he’s cute and likes to get up to silly antics.

It’s when they’re filming for Run BTS however, that none of the camera crew want anything to do with Jaekyung. It’s an absolute spectacle to behold when the crew circle around their director to find out who’s been tasked with filming Jaekyung for an episode where the mission requires an awful lot of movement. It’s even become an inside joke included within the show where they hold a segment to reveal the unfortunate staff member. Jaekyung takes his Run BTS challenges very seriously and that often means sprinting to either get away from his hyungs or to pursue them.

Most of the time though, the camera crew are still grateful for Jaekyung even after a hectic day of shooting and trying to keep up with his fast pace because he will attempt to thank them by ordering them food with his own money during breaks. He’s also respectful and assists the staff in cleaning up and putting away any necessary equipment after they’re done and packing up for the day.

When it comes to the producers, they’ve honestly never had a bad thing to say about Jaekyung, even jokingly. In fact, he’s a lot of the producers’ favourite idol due to how easy it is to work with him. He has a natural talent for singing, strives to learn and improve all the time which shows during his recording sessions. He doesn’t shy away from asking questions or for demonstrations when he’s stuck, and he follows instructions to a perfect T.

He takes his music seriously. He shows up for work on time, sometimes earlier than necessary just to get some practice in, and will add just the right amount of his own uniqueness to the song to really solidify it as his creation. He will add his own adlibs but will still ask for feedback on them and doesn’t kick up a fuss if they’re considered unfit at all. He enjoys vibing with his producers and they’ll even spend time just listening to tunes together when they’re taking a break.

Jaekyung has such a strong bond with his producers that even when they’re creating demos for other groups, they keep Jaekyung at the very top of the list of idols to sample the songs for them because he has what’s considered “the perfect pitch”, his voice also being able to nail almost any genre he puts his mind to. He’s helped a lot of producers bring their vision to life.

JAEKYUNG WITH OTHER IDOLS

( park seonghwa )

Jaekyung met Seonghwa during one of his days off of work when he was heading to his favourite boba shop to grab a quick drink. He hadn’t actually known at first who Seonghwa was as this was during a time when Ateez had only quite recently debuted but with Wooyoung’s never-ending rant about his favourite group, and Seonghwa who himself didn’t live under a rock, he was able to recognise the maknae of BTS rather quickly.

He was at the shop to relax, taking a break to enjoy the scenery within the confines of his little corner next to the window when he saw Jaekyung at the counter placing an order. He was hesitant as to approach the man during his free time but decided to go for it anyway and introduced himself to Jaekyung (who had to do a double take at the gorgeous man bowing politely).

Their friendship began from Jaekyung’s dumbstruck compliment, telling Seonghwa, “Wow, does Seoul have models just walking around like this nowadays?” to which the older blushed, revealing that he was in fact an idol who had recently debuted. They exchanged numbers after a long conversation at the shop and often keep in touch.

Jaekyung knew of Taecyeon very early on due to his affiliation with the K-pop boyband 2PM whose music he would often listen to during his trainee years. He was extremely nervous when he had heard about BTS being invited to perform at the KBS Festival with VIXX and 2PM which would have been the first time the two groups, and Jaekyung and Taecyeon, would have crossed paths. He wanted to make a good impression on his seniors.

It was after the performance, when Jaekyung was walking off of the stage with his members, his body still buzzing from adrenaline, that he had heard a soft voice calling his name. His hyungs had barely heard it, talking amongst themselves as they headed to the changing rooms for a break, but he’d turned around to see Taecyeon making his way over with a smile.

Their friendship took on more of a mentor/mentee role after Taecyeon was practically floored at the raw vocals and genuine talent of Bangtan Boys’ youngest member. He wanted to take Jaekyung under his wing, having had a few years more experience in the industry, and taught him everything he knew about idol life in order to help the boy soar in his career over the years.

Along with the rest of TXT, Jaekyung met Soobin for the first time after BTS’s Chicago performance. He knew of Bighit’s plans for debuting another boygroup, had even heard of the different trainees that had been selected, but he never truly had the time to meet them because of his own group’s busy schedule during that period in his career. Soobin (much like Jaekyung was with Taecyeon) was a fan of the maknae from the start.

According to Yeonjun’s account, Soobin would often talk about how cool he thought Jaekyung was, the fact he collected the maknae’s photocards and was often motivated to do better when watching Jaekyung perform with such vigour on stage. It made Jaekyung’s hyungs shake him in excitement and pride as the male blushed from embarrassment and tried to shove his members away.

Their friendship began due to TXT and BTS conducting business in the same building, giving Jaekyung the opportunity to get to know Soobin better and check up on him and his members during practice. He took on a similar role to Taecyeon, as a hyung who had more experience in the industry and wanted to see Soobin soar. He would give the younger advice and spend time with him outside of work too.

Jaekyung met Eunwoo through Jeongguk when he was invited to hang out with some of the boys from the 97 line. They went to a bunch of different places from restaurants to bars to karaoke clubs but most of the boys had to leave early save for Eunwoo who stayed with them until the late hours of the morning. They got talking properly after Jeongguk ended up taking a quick nap, having finished his last song for the night with the karaoke machine.

Jaekyung got to know a lot about Eunwoo’s background, his time with Astro and the members, his acting gigs, and in return Jaekyung told the older about his own history. He told him about growing up in a poor family after his parents had gone bankrupt and out of business, how he met his Pyeonghye hyungs before making it into the industry with zero expectations that he was even going to make it past auditions.

Their friendship began from how closely they were able to bond from their very first meeting, probably with the aid of alcohol in their systems to lighten them up, but they became awfully comfortable with sharing things they wouldn’t with many others. Whenever either of them had a problem, they would spend time together to take their mind off of it.

HIS APARTMENT

( the living room )

jaekyung’s living room is his favourite spot within the apartment because it’s right in the middle of everything such as his balcony, kitchen and minibar.

it’s also the biggest room in his apartment as he loves to have guests over often and throw parties. he lives in the highest level of his apartment complex and has the most beautiful views.

and with the amount of space he has, he can’t not have some crazy and interesting decor pieces scattered around. mainly his cute little display of his bear bricks collection and souvenirs from different trips around the world with his members.

the inspiration behind the interior comes from a lot of western influences. he wanted to go for a darker look but his family (who would visit him often) convinced him against it because apparently it would make him seem intimidating to guests.

( the kitchen )

like many apartments, jaekyung’s kitchen is in the same space as his living room and could probably host twenty people in it at one time. it gives him ample room to experiment with dishes.

his mother will often raid his home just to use his kitchen. jaekyung doesn’t mind however because it means he gets to taste home cooked meals again and nobody beats his mom’s cooking.

honestly there’s always a pile of dishes waiting to be washed in his sink or wrappers lying around on the counter that he forgets to throw away. he’s the epitome of a clean freak’s worst nightmare.

but even though he’s messy, he does like to keep his everyday essentials organised in little racks after nearly burning half of his food because he couldn’t find the salt or gochujang at various stages.

( the bedrooms )

his apartment comes fully equipped with three bedrooms, two of which he’s transformed into guest rooms for friends staying over. the middle image is the one he uses, although most of the time he falls asleep in the living room.

his bedroom comes with glass walls facing the front of his bed which he can slide open, leading into the balcony. at night, the curtains can be electronically controlled to close.

he doesn’t have much in his bedroom as he spends most of his time outside of it but he’s been contemplating getting a small bathtub or jacuzzi there.

when his family members argue, sometimes one of them will come over to stay with jaekyung for a few nights. each of the two rooms have practically been allocated and named after members of the family who visit most such as “mom’s room” and “sana’s room.”

( the bathroom )

jaekyung’s bathroom is a safe haven for him when times are rough and he just needs to relax. he loves to take steamy showers and bubble baths under the dim lights (which are adjustable in accordance to his liking).

his bathroom is also a goldmine of expensive skincare products. he has chairs laid out in front of the mirrors and large drawers for his items from creams to face masks to his hair dryer and more.

he has a small balcony attached to his bathroom too. sometimes he’ll keep the door open during the summer when it’s too hot and stuffy and the cold showers aren’t enough for him.

there is a television installed on the wall in front of the bathtub so that jaekyung can watch shows or movies but he’s planning to get it replaced with a projector instead because it’s more efficient and leaves more space on the wall.

for his clothes and accessories, he has a walk-in closet with hundreds upon hundreds of shelves but most of the space is honestly used up for his shoe collection more than his clothes. he has a shoe addiction.

he likes to decorate his closet with led lights and some paintings because the room looks too bland otherwise since it’s just filled full of display cases and cabinets. some of the empty spaces even display bear bricks statues.

this is the one room where he will actually put any effort into keeping tidy and organised. he has his wardrobe sectioned off and keeps his clothes on hangers, his shoes on the very top shelf and his accessories in drawers to maintain order.

and of course he can’t go without a nice vanity mirror to make sure he’s dressed in a stylish manner. a lot of his selcas are taken in front of that mirror which is also how he ended up giving army a tour of the room during a live once.

due to living on the top floor of his apartment, jaekyung has the perfect open view on his balcony and he’s taken every opportunity to take advantage of that by practically turning the balcony into a sweet little lawn.

he has his own swimming pool, installed a small grass mat to play quick games of golf or football and also has a nice fireplace decked along the edges of his balcony for cooler nights spent with the members or friends.

the balcony is decked with sofas and pillows in different corners for a lie in as well. you can see every room from here due to all the walls being made out of windows.

a lot of the time him and his hyungs like to hang out for drinks but find it difficult due to their status. this is when jaekyung’s balcony also becomes a luxury as it’s private and closed off as well as spacious enough for a night in.

HIS WARDROBE

( the casual look )

100% comfortability over crafting the next trendy look. jaekyung likes to wear baggy clothes and multiple layers especially around winter.

he doesn’t like bright colours so tends to wear black, greys and blues in order to not attract attention. sometimes he’ll have a change of heart and go for reds, beige and whites but they’re muted versions of the colours.

the jacket and baggy jeans combo is known to be jaekyung’s look. even though he wasn’t trying to make any sort of statement, it became a huge fashion trend in korea to sport a similar style to him.

when asked about the inspirations behind his style, he said he often looks at pictures and media of western people and how they dressed in the 90s. he has a huge affinity for the era.

( the work look )

armys all around the globe absolutely love the stylists at bighit when it comes to their jaekyung because the team always knows exactly how to make the maknae pop with his outfits.

jaekyung is far more versatile (as required by the company) when it comes to his work. he isn’t very picky with the outfits presented to him and will wear brighter colours and tighter clothes. it is the only time his fashion pulls a complete 180° compared to his casual look.

he is also known for being far more androgynous here as he isn’t afraid to try out new things, often brandishing skirts picked out from the women’s section and telling fans “all clothing is unisex to me.” which helped break down gender norms amongst idols.

when he does get to have some input into his outfits, he likes to show more skin. he’s very proud of the body he’s been able to achieve through working out and likes to show that off through tank tops, mesh shirts and keeping most of the buttons on his button down undone.

( the practice look )

jaekyung’s practice outfits are very similar to his casual ones as they’re both often dark in colour and baggy. he doesn’t put a lot of effort into them and usually assembles the outfit by putting on whatever’s in his line of sight.

he said he only wears these outfits when they have to film the practice videos for army but otherwise likes to go shirtless because he sweats quite easily.

some of the members will try to bury themselves inside of jaekyung’s shirt as it’s so flowy that it can fit more than one person inside. this incident has happened so many times that he’s considered wearing tighter shirts to practice.

as he still keeps in contact with his pyeonghye hyungs, they were the reason jaekyung’s practice clothes began to appear with a little more style to them. the hyungs often messaged jaekyung about how terrible his practice outfits were since they watch all of his performances, and sent him better recommendations of what to wear which he followed.

out of everything in his wardrobe, shoes are the one thing jaekyung is willing to splurge insane amounts of money on. he’s a big shoe fanatic and will often go out of his way to request custom orders.

according to hoseok and jeongguk, jaekyung has an entire wall’s worth of shoes in his closet. when asked the number, he said it was probably over 200 pairs (and counting).

when he’s running out of space for his new collections however, he does donate the ones he’s never gotten a chance to wear to charity. he wants those in need to be able to have new shoes too.

he really likes chunky designs that will boost his height and make him taller than he already is. jimin has been known to steal the pairs jaekyung wears most often.

( the accessories )

jaekyung is known to go for more of a minimalist approach when it comes to his accessories. more often than not, they’re an afterthought as opposed to a necessity so he only has a select few items in his collection.

his favourite is probably his crossbody bag because it’s convenient and tends to elevate his usual outfits. although the other members will often want to store away their own little knickknacks in his bag which is the inconvenient part.

many of his branded accessories are also actually gifts from companies that wish to persuade jaekyung to become a brand ambassador for them. some of the big names include gucci, celine, hermès and armani.

he’s terrible at knowing where he last stashed his latest accessory. a lot of the time they’re lying around the house and lost for months before he comes across them randomly on a good winter day.

JAEJIN ───── “ trust me. i know this guy. now, open your mouth. ”

although he won’t admit it, jaekyung is a great admirer of his jin hyung. it’s common to see clips of jaekyung smiling fondly as jin goofs around or makes one of his dad jokes.

most of jin’s “hyung will do it” moments are reserved specifically for jaekyung because he knows the maknae tends to try and overcompensate for his imperfections. that’s how jin got jaekyung to open up to him.

there is an inside joke within the group about jaekyung’s name because jin once called him “jake” during an episode of bon voyage when someone was asking him if they were from bts.

they’re basically like two bickering siblings because jaekyung will always say no whenever jin asks him to agree with him on something. if jin were to ask him whether he thinks he looks handsome on a particular day, jaekyung will simply say no without any hesitation and then run away.

for some reason, jaekyung is one of the most popular guests on jin’s ‘eat jin’ lives even though they’re the most chaotic duo under this setting. jin will often ask jaekyung to feed him certain foods and jaekyung will shove big chunks of it into his mouth which has the older spitting the food out and lots of laughter taking place.

but jaekyung will still go out of his way to guide jin during dance practices due to the older’s insecurities around it. jaekyung will take time out of his day to help jin with additional practice during their breaks and always hypes him up during group sessions.

because he’s the tallest member in the group, jin tends to gravitate towards jaekyung whenever he feels tired and likes to rest his head on the maknae’s shoulder.

JAEGI ───── “ everyday, all he does is terrorise me. go play some games or something. ”

yoongi can be a terrible influence in front of the younger members sometimes, and an example of that is with jaekyung who loves to parrot and encourage yoongi like that one time when he was talking about how exams aren’t important and jaekyung cheered him on.

jaekyung loves showering yoongi with affection the most. he will randomly hug and snuggle into the older because he likes how yoongi complains about it but becomes clearly flustered and melts into the maknae’s touch at the same time.

jaekyung also likes to call yoongi bangtan’s designated ‘grandpa’ and disses him when he’s being lazy or difficult. it leaves the older with the most meme worthy reactions and gets the other members laughing especially since they all know yoongi can never be mad at jaekyung.

yoongi is like a true older brother to jaekyung. he is often seen fixing the younger’s appearance whenever something is out of place such as his hair, his collar or even tucking his shirt in for him because jaekyung has a habit of keeping it untucked.

jaekyung likes to help yoongi keep up with the younger generation by teaching him slang, although sometimes he’ll play pranks and teach him made up words or slang terms with incorrect meanings.

in all honesty though, jaekyung is very keen on wanting to impress yoongi. he looks to the older for guidance and wants yoongi to notice him and compliment him on his achievements. something about a “you did well, kid.” coming from yoongi’s mouth has the power to make his entire day.

yoongi never hesitates to take jaekyung’s side when he’s whining or complaining about something because it makes the younger feel better. he does it a lot with the members, telling them “you should know better, you’re older. don’t tease my maknae.”

JAEHOPE ───── “ i don’t know why i laugh when i look at him. i guess he just has a funny face. ”

when it comes to airport fashion, it’s as if they purposely coordinate their outfits so that hoseok is wearing colourful clothes standing next to jaekyung dressed from head to toe in all black. their airport pictures are a meme within the fandom.

in terms of work, they can either be the most perfect pairing or the most chaotic one because they have so many inside jokes that they can’t help but burst into laughter by simply making eye contact sometimes, but this also means that they understand each other really well without having to communicate verbally.

jaekyung is someone who doesn’t scare very easily so they tend to make an adorable pairing when it comes to scary run bts challenges. when hoseok is afraid of something, he’ll immediately go hide behind jaekyung for protection who is ready to defend him with his life.

during time off of work, jaekyung still tends to enjoy the outdoors more than staying at home so whenever he finds a really cool place like a club or a hiking spot, he’ll facetime hoseok either at that very moment or later at night and tell him all about it. they hang out a lot outside of work and hoseok calls him a lucky charm for finding all of these niche places to visit.

they’re also probably one of the biggest teasing duos in the group, what with them knowing how to match each other’s energy on stage during performances. it’s like watching a predator trying to lure in a difficult prey with a lot of push and pull going on that has army going wild. every time they seem as if they’re about to touch, one will pull away just seconds before and it drives everyone insane.

a lot of hoseok’s persistence to keep going and work hard came from jaekyung during their early days because the maknae was a huge fan of hoseok’s dancing upon first watching him perform. he would ask hoseok for advice, cheer for him and call him cool when nobody else would. jaekyung was always able to cheer hoseok up, telling him the world will soon see just what they’ve been missing all along.

according to fans, they can be a blinding force when they’re together in public. they exude a classy and suave aura that even have locals certain they’re very important people without knowing much else about them or being aware that they’re two members of the biggest boy group in the world.

JOONJAE ───── “ hyung , aren’t you turning 30 next year ? it might be better to tone down the crazy. ”

in terms of keeping the peace within the group, namjoon is considered the best member to keep around jaekyung when he’s being bratty. jaekyung hates upsetting namjoon because he’s the leader of the group and the maknae looks up to him so if namjoon is around, jaekyung is immediately on his best behaviour.

namjoon loves to gloat about bangtan’s youngest. he thinks jaekyung has always been very talented for his age, having joined so young, and will bring this up in interviews all the time. he will make sure to compliment jaekyung so the male knows he’s valued but also because he finds it absolutely adorable when jaekyung tries to deny the compliments as his face turns an increasingly darker shade of red.

namjoon also loves jaekyung’s company. they often go on little outings together from picnics to hiking or visiting various museums and riding bicycles. they even go to the gym together ever since namjoon decided he wanted to start working out more. jaekyung spots for him and hypes his gains especially on social media.

jaekyung is the “god of destruction”’s saving grace. it’s a well known fact that namjoon tends to destroy almost everything he comes into contact with, but jaekyung is the one member who stays behind and fixes all of namjoon’s mishaps. if he breaks a toy, he’ll call for jaekyung sheepishly who will fix it for him with ease.

to jaekyung, namjoon is his ‘namie hyung’ which is a nickname he’s used since he first joined the company as a trainee. he uses it when he’s excited to show namjoon something and it endears the older a lot when he hears it. he knows exactly who’s calling for him when the name is used, but it’s also an indication of when jaekyung is upset with him or upset in general because then he will just call namjoon ‘hyung’.

jaekyung is known as the member most likely to crash another member’s live, specifically namjoon’s. and where others would find it a little irritating or annoying, namjoon adores the group’s maknae because he’s a curious soul who just wants to learn from their leader. he will sit with namjoon in his studio during lives and can listen to him talk for hours.

namjoon can never truly scold jaekyung unlike he does the other members. ever since he first joined the group as a kid, namjoon has always explained things to jaekyung in a gentle manner and he’s never really lost that habit to this day.

MINIKYUNIE ───── “ jimin hyung ? ah , he’s the little guy i always have to bend down to speak to. ”

during jimin’s extreme diet days, jaekyung was the one to help him out of his unhealthy eating habits after jimin overheard the maknae cry about it to namjoon because he was so worried. he would share his own food with jimin in hopes that his hyung wouldn’t reject his cute manner of pleading. jimin developed a likeness to having meals with jaekyung ever since because he would never judge jimin for how much he ate.

jimin and jaekyung’s families are the closest with each other in terms of friendships because jimin and jaekyung talk about each other all the time to their parents/grandparents. they’ve had joint dinners together many times and also call each other’s parents “mom” and “dad”.

jimin tends to give jaekyung special treatment because he’s the youngest. he’ll spend the most time with jaekyung outside of practice and work, even going on many trips and vacations together and doting on him. jimin loves to spoil his maknae, finding it cute to tease him one second and fuss over the little things such as him not layering up enough when it’s cold.

they’re probably most known for their viral dance covers online. sometimes they’ll go live together in the practice room and take requests from fans, and other times they’ll have created their very own choreography to a song that is uploaded to their social media platforms with millions of views within minutes.

both of them have each other’s songs tattooed on their body, ones with lyrics that really spoke to them. jimin has a lonely tattoo on his thigh and jaekyung has a serendipity tattoo on his ankle.

jaekyung is very protective and possessive of jimin. you won’t ever not see him standing beside jimin during interviews or hovering behind him when a stranger approaches to talk to him during award shows. he pretends to be fiddling with jimin’s sleeve but is quick to pull him behind him if there is any hint of a threat.

jimin is the only member that can have jaekyung blushing and forgetting his words within seconds. he loves the effect he has on jaekyung and it’s obvious to everyone in the way jaekyung avoids eye contact when he’s usually so confident around others. jimin enjoys making the maknae a flustered mess and will purposely up the antics by acting more clingy and touchy as well.

they’re the most chaotic when it comes to filming content because jaekyung can be very competitive during things like run bts challenges, whilst taehyung cares more about annoying him. they’ll get into childish little arguments and jaekyung will literally carry taehyung away from him so he doesn’t get distracted.

taehyung is extremely clingy with jaekyung so be prepared to see him in the maknae’s arms at least once throughout interviews, concerts, award shows or variety shows. he’ll be hugging jaekyung from behind and smushing his face into the younger’s back or even standing up on his tiptoes to chomp on his shoulder.

whereas jaekyung tends to invade the other members’ lives, it’s taehyung that invades his. it’s almost within seconds of him going live that there will be comments flooding in from taehyung, trying to steal all of his attention and asking him why he didn’t invite the older to join. then he will simply invade the live without a need for an invitation. it’s rare for jaekyung to have a solo live because of him.

even though they bicker like an old married couple often, they’re still super close. they used to band together to wreak havoc on the other members as young teens, playing silly pranks that would have them punished or in timeout. they will also take each other’s side with zero hesitation when encountering threats.

they pretend to dislike each other when they’re together but will throw out the most genuine compliments and praise when asked about each other in separate circumstances. there was a time where jaekyung saw a comment saying “isn’t taehyung so handsome?” during a live and he went on a cute little rant about how handsome he thinks taehyung is.

taehyung tends to worry the most whenever jaekyung gets hurt. he spends all of his free time by the maknae’s side if he’s injured and will spare no effort to make him smile on stage if he can’t perform properly. he will throw a fuss if jaekyung sustains any sort of injury and he isn’t informed immediately.

when it comes to cooking, jaekyung likes it when jeongguk cooks for him but they have to make a compromise which is that jaekyung will need to buy the ingredients if jeongguk is the one cooking. whenever he goes grocery shopping for the ingredients, he’ll later ask jeongguk if he did well with buying the right stuff and ask for praise and head pats.

Jeon Jaekyung was born on 19th November, 1998 to parents Jeon Daesoo and Moon Jia in Bath, United Kingdom during the family’s annual trip there in order to visit Jaekyung’s aunt. Jaekyung wasn’t supposed to be due for another month but because of complications surrounding Jia’s weight in addition to stress factors around the family’s dying business at the time, Jaekyung was born prematurely. Or at least that was the story he was told growing up.

By a flash of luck, the family was able to rush Jia to the hospital nearby before Jaekyung was born, and he stayed there within the NICU where doctors monitored his health before he was released a week later. He had faced some breathing difficulties, a low body temperature and came out with features that were sharper and a little less rounded due to a lack of cells to store fat but otherwise was a rather healthy baby.

After some protests from a very fussy and adamant sister, Jia chose to stay in Bath with her newborn alongside Daesoo (who was not pleased with the plan) for longer than they had initially intended. The Jeon family lived in Bath for three months before returning to Daegu where Jaekyung’s grandparents from his mother’s side, who had been running the family restaurant in their absence, had decided to visit their household in order to celebrate Jaekyung’s birth and hold their cute little grandson in their arms for the first time.

Jaekyung was named after Daesoo’s father who had passed away whilst fighting in the Vietnam war. In hanja, Jae stands for ‘talent’ and Kyung stands for ‘honour’ or ‘respect’. During the tradition of Doljabi on his first birthday, Jaekyung had picked a microphone out of the eight objects placed down in front of him, foreshadowing his career as an idol very early on. His father (who himself was a honourably discharged soldier) however, wanted him to pursue a similar path to that of the men in the family that came before him, to become a macho man, a highly regarded soldier or even a Taekwondo star.

And so growing up, that is exactly what Daesoo pushed Jaekyung towards in his free time. He was a strict man who strived for discipline in his first born son which meant corporal punishment and ‘tough love’ was the norm in the Jeon household. Jaekyung was thrown into a lake near the house when he was three, a method to forcibly teach him how to swim. He would have to call his father “sir” and ask for permission before doing simple things such as leaving the table after dinner, he would be hit with a stick when he made mistakes on his homework, and he wasn’t allowed to cry or express his feelings whenever Daesoo was around because he believed it was a sign of weakness in men.

It was an unfortunate environment for Jaekyung because he showed a lot more interest in art such as drawing and painting. He would often be found doodling during classes, drawing on his hand or using his mother or grandparents as canvases while they were taking a nap. He was often complimented for his skills which were far beyond his age range and yet when Daesoo found all of his drawings, he ripped them up and burned them. He took away all of Jaekyung’s pencils and sketchbooks that Jia had given the boy and punched her. That was the first time Jaekyung had witnessed his father hit his mother.

His parents were in an unstable marriage. He spent a lot more time with his grandparents at their home instead because Jia didn’t want Jaekyung to see how vicious Daesoo could be. Nobody outside of the family really knew what was going on behind closed doors. Jaekyung himself was still a child, not having understood the enormity of the circumstances he was thrust into. He just knew he enjoyed his grandparents’ company far more than he did his father’s. Dohyun and Dohee took good care of him, often spoiling him with treats and gifts and always buying him new sketchbooks and paint for his drawings.

As Jaekyung got older though, things were only beginning to go further downhill. After the birth of a second child, Jaekyung’s younger sister (named Jeon Sana), the family business that Jia had spent so many years working to keep had ended up going out of business. Daesoo never worked at the restaurant, he was in fact working full time as a mechanic and found the situation to be ideal as Jia could now spend time taking care of the kids more. Jia wanted to work, to find another job but Daesoo shut her down in the only way he knew would get her to listen. Jaekyung can’t remember the amount of times he saw his mother with a blackened eye or bruised cheek. It started to make him feel sick to his stomach that he could never protect her.

And so he chose to sneak out of the house when his dad was at work, often missing classes during the day so he could go around looking for work instead. It’s not as if the Jeons were particularly poor but Jaekyung wanted his mother to be happy. As a young and impressionable child, many would take advantage of his desperation and give him work that paid him way below what was agreed, usually about ₩3000 total for a full day’s work that led him having to pick between spending the money on lunch during his break or going hungry so that he could give the money to his mother instead.

It was during an argument with the manager of a local fish shop that things would take a turn for Jeon Jaekyung. After being dismissed without being paid for his work, Jaekyung had struck up an argument that had been overheard by a small group of dancers who were passing by. They intervened to ask what the problem was, and after finding out that Jaekyung wasn’t being paid for his work, threatened to report the manager for child labour.

In the end, the manager reluctantly paid Jaekyung who was very grateful to the dancers. The group of three asked him about his life, why he was working so young, and after hearing Jaekyung’s situation, decided to practically adopt him into the group. They were a local dance group called “The Pyeonghye” (trans; the brothers for life) who would often perform in the streets of Daegu and enter dance competitions for cash prizes. They didn’t exactly have enough money to lend to the boy themselves but knew that they could help him earn more than what he was earning now.

They were the foundation that taught Jaekyung everything he knows about dance, showing him videos online and helping him practice in a studio that the boys would rent from time to time. He was a proficient learner, memorising moves and instructions far more easily than what an average newbie would. The group were so impressed that they had even crowned him centre stage for an upcoming performance due to his natural talent.

And that’s how Bighit Entertainment had gotten involved.

The Pyeonghye boys had a performance scheduled in a busier area of the town one afternoon, having handed posters to passersby, asking them to attend beforehand throughout the past couple of weeks while they prepared their show.

Unfortunately, not many people showed up but the boys still danced their heart out for their audience of eight who were thoroughly impressed by their fluidity and teamwork. Jaekyung had a solo piece that had been recorded by an attendee of the show who ended up uploading the video onto YouTube which is how Bighit’s Talent Acquisition team came across his potential and asked him to audition for the company.

He was initially reluctant after finding out he was the only one the company had reached out to within the group, not wishing to abandon his brothers that did so much for him during a time of need, but they were adamant he audition, even joking to beat him up if he let the opportunity pass him by. He still wasn’t convinced, at least not until his sister had found out and spoke words of encouragement in his ear, specifically telling him about how he could help their mother escape Daesoo like he’d always wanted to if he took this opportunity and something came of it.

His mother had always been everything to him, and his sister once she came into his life too. His mother, his sister, his grandparents, the hyungs of The Pyeonghye—he decided to do it with their encouragement. He wasn’t particularly hopeful that he would pass, witnessing the many bright young talents waiting for their turn in the audition room, but he was pleasantly shocked to have received word merely a day later that he was in, surpassing requisites for audition finals.

But that was around the same time that Daesoo came across the video of Jaekyung that was uploaded on Youtube. It was a friend of the man’s that had sent him the link, complimenting the boy, but all Daesoo could see was pure red. He was furious and had hit Jaekyung so hard that he still has the scar to prove it to this day. He was almost beaten within an inch of his life until his mother stepped in. She had told him to take Sana and leave, to go anywhere but here, and in that moment he had listened. He took Sana and ran to their grandparents’ house where Dohyun and Dohee were shocked to hear what had happened. They took immediate action, even calling the police in order to have Daesoo arrested.

After that, the family had to sell their house as they couldn’t afford the rent with Daesoo no longer earning any money. All of them; Jia, Jaekyung, and Sana ended up moving with Jia’s parents. Jaekyung didn’t know what to do. He had received an offer to become a permanent trainee at Bighit but he couldn’t leave his mother all alone now, not after everything that took place. Sana disagreed. It had been an hour long discussion with the entire family present but practically everyone supported Jaekyung in going after the opportunity. His mother had cupped his cheeks, telling him to make her proud, and so his mind was made up.

He moved to Seoul permanently as a trainee in 2011, roughly around the same time as another boy named Kim Taehyung. It was a very memorable encounter because both boys had been wearing the exact same bright red North Face padded jacket when arriving at the dorm. Jaekyung’s entire family had set out to buy him the expensive jacket for the very reason Taehyung’s mother had bought him his; so that the Seoul kids don’t look down on them. Jaekyung and Taehyung were dubbed the Northies by the rest of the members in the dorm for a long time because of this.

Over the course of the next two years, Jaekyung was subjected to a rigorous and busy schedule of waking up in the crisp morning of a weekday in order to get ready for school which lasted from 8:30AM until 4PM. Upon his return, he would have about 30 minutes of free time to eat and change before joining his members in the practice room for training that ranged from dance to singing and recording tracks in the studio. This would usually last into the late hours of midnight everyday, sometimes lasting so long that Jaekyung didn’t get to sleep in his own bed for multiple nights at a time.

Due to fear of retaliation and the possibility of being kicked from the group, Jaekyung never spoke up about his discomfort. He was struggling to stay awake in school, oftentimes falling asleep during classes, avoiding eating because it made him feel sick closer to practice time. He also struggled to perform to his abilities in the studio as a result of all of this, messing up his lines and finding himself bumping into his members during group dance practices. It had gotten so bad to a point that some of the members needed to rush Jaekyung to the hospital after he had collapsed seemingly out of nowhere during one of their sessions.

This was only weeks prior to Hoseok leaving the group and Yoongi getting into an accident that injured his shoulder. Things were not looking great for the group after they’d found out Jaekyung had collapsed due to being burnt out and overworked on top of the already delicate situation. He was simply not resting enough as opposed to the hours of exertion his body was enduring.

His family, especially his grandparents, were furious about the incident, and were quick to tell Jaekyung that they were taking him back home to Daegu but the younger was insistent on staying. He had worked so hard up until this point—he couldn’t give up now. All of those hours of practice, the sweat that stuck to his skin, the bruises he’d endured from dancing his heart out over the months couldn’t just go in vain.

Luckily, management had explained that they would make sure something like this wouldn’t happen again. Jaekyung was attending an ordinary public school which is why his attendance was so necessary but after the incident, they had the younger enrolled into SOPA with Jeongguk which was a school that was far more lenient with attendance for trainees.

The other members also promised to keep more of an eye out for their maknae, making sure he didn’t skip any meals and forcing him to rest when it seemed like he definitely needed it, and slowly, things started to look up again. Hoseok had rejoined the group after some time and Yoongi (who had kept his shoulder pain from the group) seemed to be doing better too.

The group, compromised of Rap Monster, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook and Jaekyung went on to debut as BTS on 13th June, 2013 as planned and the rest was history.

The rise to fame wasn’t an easy feat. As the youngest of the bunch assigned with some of the most important roles within the group, Jeon Jaekyung had a lot of pressure riding on his shoulders from the very beginning. He didn’t want to nullify the efforts his hyungs had made for them to be able to see this moment, having finally debuted to be able to voice their message to the world. For Jaekyung to be able to make his mother proud.

Jaekyung’s biggest wish was for his mother to be proud of him. He wanted to be able to earn enough money so that she could escape the clutches of dependence and live a comfortable life, to be able to hold her head up high and brag about her son, pointing to television screens as she declared “That’s my son!” to neighbours and friends that otherwise pitied her situation. Jaekyung had quickly grown to be the most popular member amongst the group early on as apart from his sharp features, he would go out of his way to communicate with fans in an honest manner whenever possible.

His first glimpse into the outcome of his hard work came from their first concert in America while filming for AHL. He wasn’t someone that allowed his own expectations to rise, mainly as a result of early exposure to a noncommittal environment in Daegu that would often receive posters of The Pyeonghye performance schedules only to dash them into the nearest rubbish bin when they believed the group wasn’t looking. Jaekyung wasn’t expecting very many people to attend Bangtan’s free concert in LA so when crowds of bodies began entering the venue, the maknae was practically frozen backstage.

From eight people on the streets of Daegu to maybe fifty or more people at their concert in LA to thousands of fans selling out tickets within seconds at Wembley Stadium—that’s when Jaekyung knew he had made it. He was someone who was absolutely revered for his musicality over the years, respected and elevated to a level of idolatry that had his elders bow first before him when in the early stages, it had once been him in that very position of inferiority.

It was an unnerving reality that would dawn on him. He had never envisioned the group to grow as big as it did and honestly, he doesn’t think any of the other members saw it coming either. He knew Namjoon talked about it, often telling all of them that their hard work would come into fruition but even he seemed surprised by the outcome when it greeted him. Their tweets began to go viral every time they posted something, their streams welcoming thousands of viewers seconds into going live. They couldn’t even leave the dorm without at least six or more security guards present at one time.

Jaekyung was grateful for the love—of course he was. Due to the love from fans, he was able to accomplish things others couldn’t even dare to dream about, to be able to hold such high influence in a world where his littlest actions could be deemed charming accomplishments. But no one had prepared him for the other side of the coin, a reality in which along with his praises, curses were sang too. He wasn’t naive enough to believe he was completely loveable, knew someone somewhere would find some sort of problem to complain about.

“He’s way too arrogant.” “His dancing is so exaggerated.” “He should stop talking in satoori.” “Why is he so loud all the time? It’s annoying.”

The company hadn’t prepared him for this. Having started so small, they hadn’t had the resources of a large company that could provide its idols with knowledge on how to professionally manage hate and death threats thrown their way. There was no safe outlet to vent and be vulnerable. Jaekyung couldn’t burden his hyungs with the topic because oftentimes they were all dealing with worries of their own during an uncertain period in their career in 2018.

There were many considerations to disband. On top of the hate, there were false accusations of plagiarism thrown their way, the mounting pressure of success which was once a chasing star now becoming an oncoming meteor with no signs of slowing down. They were breaking boundaries others hadn’t set before, setting out to new horizons and paving the way for K-pop without the helpful hand of anyone to guide them.

They were fearful of what would come next, where this path to fame would take them but with the help of therapy, family and friends alike, they were able to process these feelings and find healthy mechanisms to cope when they began to feel overwhelmed. It took a little longer for Jaekyung to come around, having joined the industry so young that it had taken a huge toll on him in many aspects from anxiety, stress, substance abuse and nightmares to tremors and eating disorders.

He had almost made the decision to simply leave the group and allow BTS to strive forward as seven members but he should have known his hyungs, because once you’re in, you’re in for life. They had had discussions about the situation they were in, stating that if any one of the members wanted to discontinue their career, the rest of the members would follow suit and the decision would be to disband as a group because BTS would never be BTS without all eight of its uniquely talented boys.

And if that hadn’t been enough to convince him, his hyungs had also retreated to the days of their pre-debut nostalgia to a time when Jaekyung had been recovering from burnout and they would watch over him like a hawk. They would never let any harm fall upon their maknae, always checking up on Jaekyung in particular post-2018 to make sure he was doing okay. It ended up becoming a habitual act with all of the members, each of the seven dedicating a day to messaging him and asking him how he was, whether he wanted to hang out.

It kept Jaekyung’s mind busy over the years, away from the stress of an ever growing career. And with the arrival of the group’s upcoming military enlistment, it also gave them a chance to break away from music and focus on being normal citizens, serving their country with pride. Jaekyung believed this was probably what he needed before coming back in 2025 as a better musician than before he enlisted.

And just like that, two years had flown by. The reunion that so many had doubted, the group that so many loved, had returned with renewed enthusiasm for their fans and their love for each other stronger than ever.

The best was only yet to come.
