In honor of Juneteenth, I compiled some great songs by black artists
I highlight genres other than rap/hip-hop, as I don't see them get enough love from non-black people. If the list seems overwhelming, I'd recommend picking a genre of your liking, or the songs marked blue, which are my personal favorites. Hopefully, you find some new music and add a couple of these to your playlists
Jazz: Lester Leaps in [Live at Carnegie Hall] by Charlie Parker (1949); The Star-Crossed Lovers (aka Pretty Girl) by Duke Ellington (1957); Springsville by Miles Davis (1957); Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter (1966); The Black Messiah [Live at The Troubador] by Cannonball Adderley (1971)
Vocal Jazz: Unforgettable by Nat King Cole (1954); Autumn in New York by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong (1957); Lover Man by Billie Holiday (1958); Don't Go To Strangers by Etta Jones (1960); Work Song by Nina Simone (1967)
Soul: I Say a Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin (1968); Tired of Being Alone by Al Green (1971); Grandma's Hands by Bill Withers (1971); Home Is Where The Hatred Is by Gil Scott-Heron (1971); Someday We'll All Be Free by Donny Hathaway (1973)
Funk: That Lady, Pts. 1 & 3 by The Isley Brothers (1973); Summer Madness by Kool & The Gang (1974); I Want You by Marvin Gaye (1976); Some Love by Chaka Khan (1978); Dreaming About You by The Blackbyrds (1994)
Disco: You Saved My Day by Cheryl Lynn (1978); Good Times by CHIC (1979); Hot Stuff by Donna Summer (1979); Give It To Me Baby by Rick James (1981); It Should Have Been You by Gwen Guthrie (1982)
R&B: Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down) by Billy Ocean (1981); Outstanding by The Gap Band (1982); Sweet Love by Anita Baker (1986); Real Love by Mary J. Blige (1992); I Get Lonely by Janet Jackson (1997)
Neo Soul: Lady by D'Angelo (1995); Didn't Cha Know by Erykah Badu (2000); Locked Inside by Janelle Monáe (2010); Where Did I Go? by Jorja Smith (2018); Stay High by Brittany Howard (2019)
Alternative: Charcoal Baby by Blood Orange (2018); umbrellar by Dua Saleh (2020); All My Girls Like To Fight by Hope Tala (2020); Neptune by We Don't Ride Llamas (2022); Outta My Mind by chlothegod (2023)
Listen and support black musicians, and the black people around you, specially those close to you. Listening to music is not doing enough to support or boost black people's voices, so, please read and share what they have to say, particularly today, while also respecting and immersing yourself in their art and culture

steven is a really funny character actually. he never went to school. one of his powers is astral projection for no real reason. hes a musical prodigy. he was so traumatized by the end of the show they had to make an entire epilogue series about it. he spent seven years looking like a 3rd grader. he was even bisexual

Bro, it breaks my heart to see Kotaro crying, but this shit is SO GOOD.😭😭😭😭🖤🖤🖤🖤
Tumblr media
Finally got this done!! Based on a scene from my own fanfic, Like a Rolling Sea Sickness, where I got so sad that none of the other showa riders appeared until RX to help Kotaro and attempted to fix this with a post-Black guilt session between Hongo and Kotaro.
If you've finished KR Black or don't mind spoilers, You can read it here!

The inspiration from T-Rex Gets even crazier than this!! XD
There could be a very great possibility that DZ’s hit song “Dug & Rip Dance”, may have borrowed the melody from a very old song from T-Rex’s earlier discography, called “Deborah”. It’s not an exact copy, but here- take a listen!!! 😁👂
youtube
youtube
DO YOU KNOW. . .?
After Der Zibet released album called "Bessekai", they released "20 Seiki Shounen (20世紀少年)" right?
Issay, as we know, was big, big fan of T-REX and they we're big inspiration for this title. Even Hikaru, in interview from 2017 said:
"He likes T-REX and all, so he initially proposed titles like 20th Century Boy. Saying, “20 Seiki Shounen (20世紀少年 / 20th Century Boy) is a great name, isn’t it?” “Don’t you think it’s a good idea to have 20 Seiki come after Bessekai?”
There is no other informations about this, but I think it's good to know how Issay inspired himself by his favourite artists.

So true!!! Most of my ideas have come at the most RANDOMEST of times! XD
people might think creating OC lore involves a lot of thinking & planning, but in my personal experience, OC development is more like a divine vision from a god slamming you over the head with a mallet while ur doing the fuckin dishes or folding laundry

This! I feel awful actually that I forgot to even mention this!😿😿😿
you cannot talk about the homophobic murder of jonathan joss without including in the conversation that he is indigenous.
american indian men are at the 2nd highest risk of death by murder compared to all other ethnic groups. in their lifetimes, 82% of native men report having experienced domestic violence. yet the overwhelming majority of perpetrators are non-natives (88% of native men and 92% of native women who reported violence said their attacker was non-native). what’s more, tribal governments are often stymied in their attempts to bring justice against non-natives, meaning that many of these cases go unresolved.
this was an intersectional attack. the fact that he is indigenous matters, even if the motivation was homophobic, because it made him even more vulnerable and disposable in the eyes of his killer.
as always, look into MMIWP to learn more, and speak up for us. miigwetch, take care

Actor Johnathan Joss was just murdered for being gay. On the first day of pride 2025. He was best known for playing John Redcorn on King of the Hill.
Tumblr media
I had no idea he was gay but he was married to a man named Tristan Kern de Gonzales (on valentines day 2025!)
Tumblr media
They lived in San Antonio Texas where his family is from and he grew up. He was 59.
In Janurary 2025 his home was burned down which made news. It killed some of his beloved dogs. He didnt elaborate beyond he believed it was arson (gofundme is still up and i suggest donating to help his funeral costs and his husband
)
Now we know he and his husband had been threatened by several neighbors for being queer. They told pigs, pigs being pigs did nothing before or after it happened.
Yesterday Joss and his husband went to check their mailbox wherein they found one of their dogs skulls (statement from his husband
Tumblr media Tumblr media
)
As they weeped and mourned in shock, a neighbor, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, came out and aimed at de Gonzales…but Hoss jumped in front of the bullet and was instantly killed.
Ceja, homophobia murdering coward, tried to take off but de Gonzales had called pigs who vaguely tried to do something. He was arrested and his bail set for $200k. Or as my sister said who the fuck sets bail for a murderer?
San Antonio.
De Gonzales is clearly mourning, posting pics on Hoss’ fb page. This one really struck me
Tumblr media
This is why we need pride people, and not rainbow capitalism. Please donate to the gofundme and let san antonio cops knows what you think. De Gonzales said multiple neighbors had threatened them…id like to see those people investigated for arson.
Go into pride with rage and knowing. Have joy, kiss puppies, dont bow to homophobes. And maybe enjoy a little king of the hill.

TW// (Trigger warning ⚠️‼️ Vent, Murder, Homophobia, Hate Crime.)
Id like to vent about what happened. The most vile act of hate I think I’ve ever had the travesty of reading. It made me sick to my stomach. It was Murder, of a community brother I didn’t even know I had.
I’m not a “king of the hill” fan at all. I was born in 2002, and sadly did not get to be part of that generation that grew up watching the show.
I only just heard about who Jonathan Joss was today. But as a very active member within the queer community, reading the news of what happened the other day, at the beginning of PRIDE MONTH!
Words cannot even begin to express the hurt that I feel personally over this hate crime that has just occurred. Within the span of a few hours, Jonathan’s husband lost his house, his Dogs, and the love of his life who selflessly push him out of the way, so that he could save his life. Homophobia and hatred once again tears apart a love within a world that actively hates and anything outside of the M|W binary, and does everything within its power to completely destroy people like us- just a normal everyday couple like Jonathan and his Husband. A couple that was just trying to survive.
I am so enraged and sickened over this, I find myself just completely speechless. I want to cry even. THIS is why we need Pride month. I wish I had something better to say, I’m sorry, I’m legitimately so upset over this, and I’m not even a King of the Hill fan.
My Queer, Gay, Trans and LGBTQ+ siblings out there. Please. Please I beg of you, this pride month do everything within your power to fight back: spread the words of Unapologetic, Unconditional love, compassion and acceptance, no matter who they are or who they choose to love. This year’s 2025 Pride is a war we have to wage like no other one before. Find your people you call friends, Family. Stick together, be there for one another,
Reach out to anyone you know who maybe suffering or in need of just that one person to be there for them in these dark scary times to say, “I see you, I love you/, you are not alone, and I’m here for you.”
Let us stand in Solidarity together, my friends. Above all else, please. Stay safe.
To Jonathan Joss….. I didn’t know you. I’m sorry this is the way I had to find out about you. You didn’t deserve to become another community Martyr like this. You didn’t deserve to have your whole life torn apart and then taken away, the way it did by the hands of that fucking monster. The police should have listened. Once again, the world has failed our community- because to them we are insignificant; nothing more than a fucking Virus that deserves to be squandered and be wiped from the face of existence. Your sacrifice won’t be in vain. You will be remembered… for both your art and what you did for this world. I’m so so sorry. For you and your husband, who’s now forced to face this cruel world alone.
I hope somehow you rest in peace. I did not know you, but thank you. May I pray that I don’t loose another one of my community members this pride month season. May I pray that your Neighbor rots in a Jail cell for the rest of his lowly pathetic days. May I pray that he rots in hell.
I love you all. I’m so sorry, please take care.

PREACH!!!! 👏🖤 FUCKING PREACH!!!!
I’ve never read a Reddit post that has spouted so much STRAIGHT UP FACTS in my whole damn life!!!!!!
You see, ^ THIS is why y’all should start GIVING A SHIT about Issay and Der Zibet!!!
(If I could add my own Issay-crazed 2 cents into this post,) Let it also been known that this 20,000 word interview that PalaceofIssay-san references within their post, he did in 1994!! During the time period where the AIDS epidemic was hitting Japan- MONSTROUSLY, (and without ANY mercy).
AAAAAAND surprise, surprise! 🙄😔 Just like the rest of the world, extremely Homophobic rhetoric spread throughout the islands along with the awful disease. AIDS got demonized and spewed into the hearts and minds of the scared Shitless Japanese conservative public as “the Gay Virus”, and the very Queer community that Issay loved, and dedicated himself so tirelessly to protecting was Scapegoated, with him included.
I couldn’t imagine how just completely mortified over his own life Issay must’ve been, along with the lost names and martyred souls of countless other Gay individuals. In that same interview, the “fearless” Issay would go on to confess about how scared SHITLESS he was about getting AIDS! To the point where, after he went to go see a movie with his dear friend Tatsuya (who you may know from ALLNUDE,), it was him during the end credits scene to turn around and mention to Issay that he would take care of him if Kamisama forbid anything were to happen to him.
Issay just looked at Tatsuya in silence before he just, cracked. He broke down and started sobbing.
I honestly couldn’t dare to place myself into the mental, inner turmoil Issay must’ve been battling through all this; Within that awful time. To begin to even imagine the sheer loss, hopeless and devastation that laid waste, to over the countless of lives that couldn’t be saved, sexuality be damned. Fathers, mothers, Best friends, mailmen, neighbours, Artists who used tried to use their platform to bring about awareness, demand action for safer sex, and break the stigma; cousins. Midnight club-goers who were just looking to find a connection for the night, for a safe space to have fun or shelter themselves within for the while. Lovers, who against all odds or what people had to think or say about them, dreamed of building their entire lives together.
All of that, faster than you probably even had a glimpse of time to process , just taken away.
These were people who just wanted to live their own autonomous lives, and express themselves the way they wanted to, outside of the suffocating box that society still tried to lock us air-tightly within. That horrible time left a permanent scar on our community. Under the hellfire landscape and tyranny of the orange menace’s widespread, fear-mongering hate-regime, We as Gay, Queer and trans individuals living in 2025 still feel the aftermath of what the AIDS crisis did to people’s views on us, more so than the endless centuries past. To this very day they try to do everything within their power to completely undermine the “Issay”’s of the world.
Christian Nationalism, which was embedded into the government orchestrated state of panic, amidst a much more serious and complex crisis, still threatens to take our rights away in this modern era. Not a single year has gone by since then, where the LGBTQ+ community hasn’t had to have spent years fighting the same old system, because the reality of the matter is: nothing has ever changed. They still hate us- People like Issay, people like me, as a Queer, genderless human being- like so many other community Icons that also helped pave the way. They still continue to scape goat us like back then. They have and always will see us for nothing more than the virus that ended up slaughtering millions worldwide. A virus we weren’t even the cause for. Yet we still carry the torches of our fallen.
The LGBTQ+ community still fights the same battle that Issay fought to put an end to.
Because of everything going on, I want to you to take into consideration that Issay could have easily chosen to keep himself silent in that interview. To just skim over that part of his life, make himself small- to protect himself and his own career. But no, that’s not what happened.
This man chose to share that part of his story, no matter how crass and Innapropriate to the public it may have sounded. He “came out”. With his usual poised defiance and tenacity, he wasn’t going to allow himself to be “closeted”, (I say in quotations cuz like, let’s be fr, was this man ever in there?!! The one he locked himself in, in his room for 3 months doesn’t count). Of course he wouldn’t have ever dreamed to let that happen.
You wanna know why?! Because he was Fujisaki Issay! In all of his punk rock “Fuck you! IDGAF about anything!” Attitude-driven glory! To have censored himself would have been to betray the everything he stood for in life. To have not raged against the machine, with the upmost defiance and sincerity- standing unapologetically beside his core beliefs and Values, would have been to abandon his own self completely.
And 👏 THAT IS WHY I LOVE HIM!!!!!! Forget Johnny Rotten, and forget Sid Viscous- ISSAY WAS A TRUE PUNK!!!!
This man was a QUEER👏GAY👏REBEL👏FUCKING👏ICON!!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏 A truly unsung hero within the visual kei community, who (as the yougins say I guess-) walked so that other queer Bandōmen could RUN!
But anyways, enough of the giant essay:
🫵 GO LISTEN TO DER ZIBET!!!
With pride month coming just right around the corner, you’d be doing yourself a huge service in honouring this Amazing man, and the insanely talented people he performed with!!
I hope that someday more people will start talking about him, because his legacy deserves to be remembered. His story of rock and roll Caberet-rebellion deserves to be told.
MY OWN THOUGHTS, PT2
Do you ever realise how bold Issay was, when he talked about things like — having no gender, or sleeping with men during his collage years?
We know how Japan is strict when it comes to topic of LGBT+ now, and back then it was much worse than now. Yet, he doesn't care about public opinion and he told us about fact, that he wore make-up to school, painted nails and he doesn't really feels like man, or woman.
I, sometimes, think deeply about those words from the 20,000 words interview with him in 1994.
"In the first place, I don’t have much feelings about being male or female, that’s definitely where I stand. That’s why I hate the “male” “female” categorisations. You see, to me, gender is not something that has an ideal. That’s why, back then, I think I was even more big-headed with even more radical ideas than I am now. And that’s why, in my mind, I don’t have a gender."
I'm not sure if he viewed himself like this when he was older, because there is no interview with mention of it, but!
I'm really amazed by him. It's not about /possibly/ being gay (or bi), and sleeping with them. It's not about ships, not about his gender. It's all about him, because not every artist could say things like this loudly.
He deserves every kind of attention and that's the fact.

Sorry typos, when Issay SAID:
DO YOU KNOW. .?
You probably noticed how many times Issay wore this one, specific belt, right? Previously, Jim Morrison (vocalist of The Doors) was the owner of this item and Issay wanted to have it, but it was way too expensive. Nothing surprising, right? Since it belonged to Jim, the costs must be big.
But Issay's friends put money together and bought him this belt.
More than 20 people contributed to our star having his belt, which he later wore almost non-stop.
I can imagine his hapiness because of this.
