HOW do you draw Jack's hair
Jack's hair is definitely one of the weirder ones to wrap the ol' brain around! it doesn't look too bad at first, but when you try to draw it, you realize that there is...kind of a lot going on there on top of his head.
this is just how I think of it while I'm drawing; your mileage may vary -- and this is certainly nowhere even approaching on-model -- but maybe you'll find something helpful in here anyway! :D
with Jack, I find it especially necessary to break it down into steps, even with a looser and super-simplified style like mine. I usually start by establishing his hairline (not my most beautiful Jacks, sorry, but they get the job done):
hairlines roughly follow the plane changes of the head, and they have different shapes depending on the person; Jack's is pretty rounded. (there's usually a little loop that goes around the ear, which he doesn't have for, well, obvious reasons.)
I think of his hair as a few specific sections, layering from the front to back. I normally just rough them in instead of drawing each bit out completely, but this is how I have his hair separated out in my head, in about the order I tend to draw them:
mane-like fringe that kind of sticks up straight out of his hairline:
little tufty center bit:
what I think of as the "main" section of the hair -- the spikes point upwards on the top half of his head, then downwards for the bottom half:
the...tail...thing that's layered under the main section:
and of course, the whipped-cream puff bangs:
all together:
finish it off with some little tufts to cover any exposed edges of the ears, and color:
I hope this helps! and if not, please enjoy this exploration of my AU where Jack goes to clown college instead of magic school.
