“That was literally one time Axel. Shut it.” I frown.

The three burst out into laughter and I can’t help but crack a smile of my own. I’d give anything to not be avoiding Riku anymore...

I raised my bow, but he grabbed his own cello and sat down next to me after tying his silver hair back.

“But this time, I’ll play with you.”

The shift in the room was undeniable. And my shock obvious.

“This is what you wanted isn’t it? Don’t my me regret this.” He chides.

And for the first time in weeks, I felt something other than dread at the start of a private rehearsal. I felt hope.

I gave a short laugh, more like a puff of air.

“Easy for you to say. You're not sparing with your parent’s old fighting buddy.”

“Yeah, and now he’s just a guy with a big ass sword and bad jokes. You’re just sparing for the hell of it, like you said.” Axel reassures.

But then, without warning, Riku’s expression shifts. The warmth fades. His eyes darken, and the storm rolls in.

“Why are you still stuck in the past?”

His voice is quiet, but sharp as glass.

“I’ve already left you behind.”

Riku turns and walks into the crashing tides without looking back.

I jolt awake, drenched in sweat, his words still echoing in my mind like a curse.
