CineMAiubit Project Development Lab 2018 is Officially Launched with Six Daring Projects in the Mix
CineMAiubit Project Development Lab 2018 kicked off its first rebranded edition and its seventh edition of international script development based in Bucharest, Romania. The Lab announced this year’s selected projects, which is one a highly diverse mix of stories and daring cinematic voices.
This year, six short fiction projects were selected to join the international lab:
A film with 16 characters and a black cat (comedy), written by Reka Barabas
406 KM (coming-of-age drama), written by Emil Vasilache
The Funeral (dark comedy), written by Paul Berenștein
Iris Tea (drama), written by Maja Kovačević
Not Your Son (drama), written by Rithiya Tejasen
Plex și Glas (drama/dark comedy), written by Andreea Dobre
All the projects will enter an intensive script development marathon through an introductory storytelling workshop and one-to-one meetings lead by international guest Csaba Bollok, outstanding Hungarian writer/director and script development trainer of Midpoint Central European Script Center.
Hosted by CineMAiubit ISFF, the lab aims to empower junior storytellers to improve their film craft and make it appealing on an international level.
The lab is nationally coordinated by Ioana Mischie and designed as an inspirational playground for early stage career filmmakers, reuniting mostly students or fresh Alumni currently based in Romania. This year’s edition has Emil Vasilache as a production intern.
CineMAiubit Project Development Lab began as the first international script development program in Romania back in 2012 (under the nickname of miniMIDPOINT) and ever since then it helped develop more than 30 script projects often led by teams of writers-directors-producers.
Several short film projects were finalized, reaching excellent national and international results, such as: “Tomorrow, Bach” (directed by Mihnea Ciorica, written by Diana Voinea) nominated for the Gopo Awards 2014 - Best Short Film or “In The Sidecar” (written by Ion Bordian and Mircea Bobina, directed by Mircea Bobina), traveling at numerous international festivals worldwide.
__________________________________________________________________
Csaba Bollok is an outstanding voice in the contemporary Hungarian cinema and worldwide. He started making short movies as an independent filmmaker in the late 80s and graduated as a film director at the Hungarian Film Academy in 1994. He also studied filmmaking several times in the United States, and made short films at the legendary Béla Balázs Studió. His first feature North by North (1999) was awarded the Hungarian Filmcritics’ Prize. Iska’s Journey (2007) won Grand Prize at the Hungarian Film Week, premiered internationally at the Berlinale, and has been a great international success since then. At present, Csaba Bollók is a professor at the Eszterházy Károly College, Moving Image Department. Though his rare cinematic voice and powerful story craft, he is the highly cherished international mentor of the lab.
Ioana Mischie is a Romanian-born transmedia cinematic storyteller (screenwriter/director), awarded for filmmaking, creative writing, interactive concepts and a Fulbright Grantee Alumna of USC School of Cinematic Arts. Her cinematic projects have traveled to more than 60 festivals worldwide (Palm Springs ISFF, Hamptons IFF, Thessaloniki IFF) and were developed in international programs (Berlinale Talents, Sundance Workshop - Italy, Cannes International Screenwriters Pavilion). She has collaborated as a writer/director with Channel 4 in the UK (for two doc webseries with a record of views in the UK) and with the Oscars awarded Legende Films (for the short fiction “237 Years”). Cofounder of Storyscapes, an NGO focussing on transmedia storytelling initiated in 2012. She deeply believes that storytellers are the “architects of the future” (Buckminster Fuller).

Csaba Bollok, on how to play with levels of the transparent and the enigmatic in contemporary storytelling, in a daringly intuitive interview.

(c) photo Juan Osorno
Although an introduction might feel tautological, Csaba Bollok is the mentor that inspires every year, apart of the miniMIDPOINT participants, young filmmakers around the world. This year we have shared a 4th edition of the script development program, achieving an inspiring rewriting marathon for 6 short scripts. Alexandra Nenciu, miniMIDPOINT 2015 intern, have interviewed Csaba and the result is this meaningful collection of thoughts:
Alexandra: It's the 4th miniMidpoint edition in collaboration with Midpoint Central European Script Writing Center and CinemaIubit ISFF. How do you view this initiative now, retrospect, after the 4th edition?
Csaba: It's been already the 4th edition? I think it was a great idea from the innovative organizers of Midpoint (Barbora et al., the girls in Praha) to extend this activity beyond the yearly two major workshops, one held in Slovakia during the Artfilm Festival, the other in Praha at the end of August. We have smaller workshops in Bucharest, Lodz, Zagreb and elsewhere that have one or two tutors and less participants but this makes it all the more personal. I usually do the Bucharest workshop and I hope that is not only because Budapest is closest to Bucharest. My reason is that I have a traditionally good relationship with UNATC students, I appreciate their attitude towards filmmaking, especially their reliance on reality (which is quite rare in Europe, among younger filmmakers). This year's novelty was a pitching forum, held by Barbara Dukas, guest of CinemaIubit, and everyone could benefit from this extra event. So, let's keep it for the coming years!
Alexandra: What are the difficulties you feel that come with the responsibility of being a script mentor?
Csaba: This has two sides, and thanks for this question, talking about responsibility. One is obviously for the students: I'm there to support them in their visions and search for the needs of their projects. When I feel a project is close to a commonplace or to be boring, instead of skipping it, I'd rather suggest to introduce a contradiction, a surprising element that makes it peculiar and less commonplace. For actually there are not much stories we tell, according to some Hollywood books, there are only 18, other say 21, which is something to be smile at. But indeed, it is the Tao (the way) of storytelling, our personal approach that will make the stories - our stories. The ones that only we can tell at this part of the world and this time of our history. The other side of responsibility is towards the audience, and I think that is a major part of the mentor's work. How to shape a story so that it could preserve all the good qualities for a movie experience? How to play with levels of the transparent and the enigmatic? How to be plausible and surprising at the same time? How to play hide and seek while telling a story? If you learn this game, the audience will be grateful to you, almost like children to parents who know how to speed up a swing and then, help them get out of the carousel.
Alexandra: I know that each year there is a diegetic theme, this year's being: "Put down the map and got wonderfully lost". Is it really important that the participants respect the theme? What are in genereal the criterions of choosing the scripts?
Csaba: These themes are but a safety net. If someone needs inspiration, one can draw it from thematic limitations. But I believe that if we really have something to say, some personal experience to share, than no matter what our thought-to-be theme was, we will end up talking about what really aches us or what we want to share with others. And that is as natural as springs find their ways to the surface.
Alexandra: As a director and considering the fact that the scripts are send by teams of 2 or 3, do you see the projects as being future short films or just present scripts?
Csaba: There are so many virtual things out there now - where "out there" is meant literally and without knowing where actually it is - that I am absolutely go for getting real. I only see the scripts as would-be short movies. I am very much production oriented, and I have to admit that I am not cautious about every aspect of the script, because I know that the flesh-and-blood part of the experience is yet to come.. while making the movie. Script is a blueprint like Shakespeare's texts, and the performance is the challenge. How we get into it, how we identify with it. For I think, that is crucial in art, to be identical with what we do. Please do not mix it with self-expression which, for me, has become an outdated, romantic category by 21st century. Identification means our full concentration on the phenomenon we are dealing with. It means our attention to the heart of the matter, listening to its beat. And then, pass on this "heartbeat" to others.
Alexandra: What do you think are the main advantages of a workshop in comparison with a full-length course on screenwriting?
Csaba: The advantage is that it is short. In a few days you have to take giant leaps. When you have a semester or a year for that, you feel you have the time. But actually, you haven't. Instead of don't try this at home, I'm saying, try this at home! Ask your friend or girlfriend to lock you up in a room with some tea and cakes for the weekend, and do not dare to come out unless you finish your first draft. It may work better than a semester of daydreaming.
Alexandra: Is there anything you would like to improve in the miniMidpoint for the future editions?
Csaba: I think the circumstances are given, I have beautiful colleagues and devoted students all around. If there is one field I'd like to improve is myself. I'd like to see life as a lifelong university, being able to learn from each and every moment or each student I meet.
