I think the hardest part about addressing child abuse is getting people to acknowledge, not just intellectually but actually responding accordingly, is that the biggest threat to children, the biggest risk of abuse, is family and parents.

it is of course most often parents who are crowing about needing to protect children (often against far smaller threats than family), and pointing out that they are, statistically, the biggest threat to their kids is not gonna be received well.

i've had a few thoughts after meeting some butches and femmes recently that i'd like to voice!! please feel free to weigh in :)

- you are not a butch or a femme if you cheat on your partner

- you are not a butch or a femme if you coerce anyone into sex

- you are not a butch or femme if you hurt your partner intentionally, either verbally or physically

- you are not a butch or femme if you hurt women, in general, intentionally

- you are not a butch or femme if you call women derogatory terms, such as bitch, slut, cunt, etc. and mean it with disrespect

- you are not a butch or femme if you do not respect the gender identities of the opposites

- you are not a butch or femme if you are not a lesbian

- you are not a butch or femme if you are transphobic, racist, xenophobic, or antisemetic

- you are not a butch or femme if you view women exclusively as sexual objects for your pleasure and desire them as such

- and finally, you cannot wholeheartedly call yourself a butch or femme if you do not understand the meaning and history behind those identities.

butch and femme are not restricting identities, but they are also not aesthetics, and they do come with a caveat: to respect and protect your lgbtq+ sisters, brothers, and lovers no matter what.

butch and femme have an inherently protective history. to embody them is to pay tribute to the ones that came before you and paved the path to lgbtq+ liberation :)
