(chonny jash fic; basically, mind gets frostbite and heart saves his ass. with a dash of angst but not really)

The weather had been getting pretty cold lately. Heart didn't mind the cold too much, as it just meant he could bundle up in his hoodie and eat sweets all day indoors; one of his favorite things to do. It also meant that Mind wouldn't bother him, as he'd be too irritated with the weather. Mind hated the cold, his thoughts were always so occupied with the frigid snow that he couldn't think logically enough.

Mind grumbled as he trudged past Heart and Soul. Heart was wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket near the fire and humming to himself, while Soul was laid out on the couch playing with a lighter. Mind rolled his eyes at their particularly stupid antics. He decided he'd stay to himself in his room away from his foolish brothers. He almost made it to his door when he heard a loud gasp come from the living room. Before he could even turn around, he heard Soul yell, "YO, WHERE THE HELL IS DARRELL??" Soul jumped up from the couch and started frantically looking around for his pet chicken. "hm..?" Heart said, tilting his head. "the last time I knew he was there was when we came inside from snowboarding and hour ago..." Soul gasped again. "DARRELLLLLLLLLL!!!!" He screamed, running straight to the door and scapmering into the dark and snow. "Damn, I guess we gotta find Darrell," Heart sighed, reluctantly getting up from his cozy blanket. he walked to the door Soul frantically ran out of and heard Mind clear his throat. He was standing in the hallway outside his door, watching the whole thing go down. "What, are you just gonna stand there!? Come on, apollo, we have a damn chicken to find!" Heart urged, grabbing a coat to layer on top of his hoodie and rushing out the door. Mind rolled his eyes. as much as he'd hate to do what his brother said, he decided the smartest thing to do was to go look for Darrell, too. It t was souls beloved pet, after all. If it was for the brother he tolerated slightly more, he figured it would be the proper thing to do.

Mind groaned and dragged himself out the door, also grabbing a coat on his way out. Despite his turtleneck, jacket and puffy coat all layered on top of him, the cold still pierced through his clothes like a blade. Mind shivered as he shuffled his way through the snow, hoping to make this quick. He heard his brother from a distance calling for his chicken, and he saw Heart blindly (literally) wandering around. since Heart was roaming eastwards and Soul was searching to the west, he figured it would be smart to make his way up north. Despite how short of a distance the walk seemed, walking in such freezing weather and heavy snow was painfully difficult to do, even if he'd only walked about 20 feet. It didn't make it better that Mind despised the cold. He saw his brothers dissapear into the dark as he pushed himself forwards.

After a good 10 minutes of walking, he slowly realized that putting himself out here in the freezing cold - something he hated - just to find a chicken that two people were already looking for was absurd. He couldn't stand the frigidness anymore. Mind decided he'd just turn around and head back home. wait... where was home?? He couldn't see the lights to their house any longer. He could only see a few feet ahead of him, and the rest was blizzard and darkness. Mind cursed himself for being so foolish, but his anger was the least of his problems. He had no idea where the hell home was, and he was stuck in the middle of who knows where. He figured he couldn't be that far, but he didn't know which direction to go. what if he just headed farther away? In his panic, Mind remembered his footsteps. He facepalmed for not thinking of that sooner. Surely his footprints in the snow would tell him which way to go, if he could see them enough in the darkness, that was. He looked at the ground; no sign. The snowfall had filled in any traces of him being there. "Damnit!! No, no, no!!" Mind hyperventilated. The cold was getting unbearable. He felt his fingertips go numb, as his legs started to get pins and needles. It wouldn't be long before those went numb, too. He decided his best bet would be to move around and hopefully go in the right way home. Maybe it would get his body warmed up again. Instead, however, it just led to mind running around aimlessly as his body slowly gave in to the freezing temperatures. His body ached, and he felt like he could barely move. Mind had to go to his last resort. He screamed for help, hoping that someone would hear him. Despite how much he loathed heart, he sure would be happy to see him right now. He called for help again, praying with every fiber in his being that someone would come. Minds body couldn't take it anymore. He fell to his knees and then to his hands, the snow and ice stinging his body. His breathing sped up as he panicked. This would probably be the end for him. Suddenly, his petty arguments and insulting names he called his brother seemed stupid. It pained him to know he'd freeze to death here without ever truly getting along with his sibling for longer than a few weeks. And he felt horrible that soul would never see all of them get along, either. He swore under his breath. How foolish of him.

Just as he felt himself giving out, he heard the snap of a twig hm behind him. He snapped out of his thoughts to spin around and see his brother, Heart, standing over him. "J-..? Juno!!" Mind breathed heavily. "Please.. H-Help..." He managed to get out as he felt like he was on his last leg. Heart gave him a look of annoyance, but also sympathy. Like he didn't want to help him, but at the same time couldn't help but pity him. It was in hearts nature, after all. In spite of how much he hated mind, he still had a little bit of love for his brother. He couldnt just let him die out here in the cold. Heart took off his overcoat and layered it on top of mind, hoping they'd get home before the cold got to heart as well. He helped mind up and let mind lean on him a bit as they walked back. Mind coughed, still a bit cold but doing slightly better with the extra jacket. Heart didn't say anything the entire route home, so neither did Mind. After a good stretch of walking, the two finally made it back.

Soul had been pacing around in the doorway when he finally saw them come in. "THERE you guys are! I'd been waiting forever!! I-" Soul paused as his eyes looked over the two of them. Mind was shivering and wet, leaning up against Heart for support while Heart stood there with his arm around Mind's shoulder. "No... wait- are you guys, GETTING ALONG!?" Soul gasped, excitedly running and pulling the three of them into a big hug. Mind scoffed. It was obvious that if they were actually getting along, they'd probably become whole again by now. But, it was a start...

Mind and Heart were sat in front of the fire, warming up. Soul eventually found Darrell sitting on the space heater in his room. While Soul was busy running around the house with Darrell on his head, it gave mind and heart a chance to talk one on one for a while. "...Thanks," Mind said dryly. Heartmade a small "hmph" sound at that. After another moment of silence, Heart spoke up. "Y'know, you don't have to be so damn mean all the time to me," Heart grumbled. Mind rolled his eyes. " Here we go again... I am not mean. I just say it how I see it. It's not my fault you're too sensitive for my mild criticism." Heart gritted his teeth. "See!? THIS is what I'm talking about! No point you make gets across when you word it so insultingly!" Mind was about to say something else before he stopped and sighed. "Please, can we just not do this right now?" He was tired of arguing, and he was still a bit shaken up. It would be smart to just sit there and enjoy the fire without conflict. Heart hesitated, but dropped it as well.

The two just sat in front of the warm blaze and did their best to enjoy each other's presence. It had been a long while since they could sit in the same room that long without a spat. They both actually enjoyed the peace and quiet. Maybe one day they'd stop their petty arguments, one day they'd actually listen to how the other side felt, one day the three of them would become whole again. But for now, keeping to their selves would do.
