From the article:
Through a Dept. of the Interior initiative aiming to bring indigenous knowledge back into land management, 76 square miles east of the central stretch of the Klamath River has been returned to the Yurok tribe. Sandwiched between the newly-freed Klamath and forested hillsides of evergreens, redwoods, and cottonwoods, Blue Creek is considered the crown jewel of these lands, though if it were a jewel it wouldn’t be blue, it would be a giant colorless diamond, such is the clarity of the water. It’s the most important cold-water tributary of the Klamath River, and critical habitat for coho and Chinook salmon. Fished and hunted on since time immemorial by the Yurok and their ancestors, the land was taken from them during the gold rush before eventually being bought by timber companies. Barry McCovey Jr., director of the Yurok Tribal Fisheries Department, remembers slipping past gates and dodging security along Blue Creek just to fish up a steelhead, one of three game fish that populate the river and need it to spawn. Profiled along with the efforts of his tribe to secure the land for themselves and their posterity, he spoke to AP about the experience of seeing plans, made a decade ago, come to fruition, and returning to the creek on which he formerly trespassed as a land and fisheries manager. “To go from when I was a kid and 20 years ago even, from being afraid to go out there to having it be back in tribal hands … is incredible,” he said. Part of the agreement is that the Yurok Tribe would manage the land to a state of maximum health and resilience, and for that the tribe has big plans, including restoring native prairie, using fire to control understory growth, removing invasive species, restoring native fish habitat, and undoing decades of land-use changes from the logging industry in the form of culverts and logging roads. “And maybe all that’s not going to be done in my lifetime,” said McCovey. “But that’s fine, because I’m not doing this for myself.”

do y'all even know how much i hate being an "elder queer" at 40? a whole goddamn generation before me was wiped out by a plague that politicians deemed not their problem bc it was killing the "right" people. like. this was OPENLY STATED. i spent a large chunk of my childhood going to funerals. nevermind the fact that killing queer people for being queer wasn't codified into law as a hate crime until i was a junior in high school.
i should NOT be an elder queer, i should be middle at most. i am a middle aged queer. most of the elder queers died.
when i was growing up i didn't go to pride parades, i went to pride marches. because that's 100% what they were in the 80s and 90s.
from the absolute bottom of my heart, LEARN OUR FUCKING HISTORY. a generation was nearly wiped out so you young queers could be here. don't let that have been in vain, please.

The United States Senate has voted last night 51-49 for a motion to proceed with the reconciliation “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act.
Reconciliation means the House versions and the Senate versions of the bill have been reconciled into one and is now on the Senate floor to be debated in preparation for a final vote.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will:
Cut over $900 billion dollars from Medicaid pushing over 16 million Americans to lose health insurance coverage.
Increase the national debt by $1.1 trillion dollars due to skyrocketing tax cuts for the wealthy.
Massive funding cuts for programs such as food stamps, and head start
This bill will be the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class to the rich in American history.

The company I get dead bugs for taxidermy from just sent this out for black history month, I recognized Charles Turner’s name since I’m a certified Bug Fan but reading all he’s done for bug science is so neat :)!! Really makes me emotional like. He showed the world that even the tiniest bugs have complex thought and can learn like anything else!! I love bugs so much and this guy’s work is so impressive I love him he’s so cool
